Immortalizing his characters

I don't have any of my chars named after any of his, but I have always loved his books.

Another of the Greats of our age has passed on.
David Eddings and Robert Jordan. 2 of the Greats that will be sorely missed and forever loved. They have enlivened so many imaginations over and again.

15 or so years ago I had a Sparhawk in an online community. In UO, only 1 other character and he "died" years ago on Pac.

That's sad news. I just finished re-reading several of his series.

Make that three of the greats...David Gemmell was a top of the line fantasy author that was, imo, better than most of the fantasy writers ever. When he died in 2006, the fantasy community suffered a huge loss.

I read the "Will and the word" series many many years ago as a young fellow. It was one of the first fantasy series I had ever read following my first love, Tolkien.

I have never used a name from a fantasy novel as a character name for an MMO. I always felt it was unoriginal and lazy. I can still remember all the of "Raistlins" running around UO when it went live. So annoying. Made it hard to tell players apart.

I used to have a D&D character named Fizbin, but that was way before the Dragonlance series was ever allowed to annoy us with the creation of Kender-kind. Fizbin was a card game played in an episode of the original Star Trek series. That's about as close to ripping off a name as I have ever come.

I was sorry to hear about Mr. Eddings passing. He did leave behind some fun stories for us to treasure and I'd say that's a pretty good legacy.

I personally laugh at all the MALE "Artemis" running around, named for Bob Salvatore's assassin foil of Drizzt do'Urden.

Artemis is the name of a PERPETUALLY VIRGINAL FEMALE Greek Goddess.

Bob meant it as sort of a fantasy "Boy named Sue" joke (You'll understand once you hear what "Sue" in the song went through, and why his father named him that).

The correct MASCULINE spelling of the name is Artemus - like Artemus Gordon from Wild Wild West (the TV series is MUCH better than the Will Smith movie, and is one of the seminal "Steampunk" inspirations)

Terrible news... he was one of my favorite authors. I loved how he developed his characters giving them wit and sarcasm. His writing style was so natural that it was so easy to put yourself into his stories. RIP David.
