Greetings!

After 9 years away from the game, I've decided to start a new account. I've been reading up on uoherald, stratics, and uoguide a bit, and it's clear that UO has changed significantly in my time away (can't say I'm surprised). My old account had a tamer, nox-mage, and archer/lumberjack - I will probably first work on a new tamer/bard, and then a pvp mage. I plan on starting my new account in a couple weeks and have a few questions that I hope you all can help me with.

1) What are some good ways to make money these days? When I left the game I remember grinding for glacial staffs to sell... with all the new content I doubt that would still be an efficient way to start building my fortune, but what are some good spawns to work on once I get up around 80 taming/lore?

2) Is a poison/inscription mage still a viable PvP template?

3) How much will it cost me to buy a small house? Or am I better off trying to place my own? Trammel, Felucca, or any of the new content would be fine by me.

can find large tower spots in felucca, wander around. Possibly ice island, most likely near wooded areas.

probably a good idea if you havent already done so to make sure your account has the stygian expansion.

a good way to make money now is to farm the abyss for the various essences that drop on the mini spawns throughout the sygian dungeon. imbuing is the new craft skill and players are looking for the necessary ingredients to tailor there weapons.

farming the ingredients for hit lightning, dci, lmc and lrc will go quite quick on ur vendor or if you post them for sale on the merchant forum. also powder of fortifying has exploded in price so it makes smithy's and bods very desirable again.

next look thru your house for your minor artifacts. pixie swatters, bonecrushers cursed doom arties. these can be unraveled for relic fragments which are in high demand.

nox scribe mage is probably a bit out dated as everyone chugs to cure poison but can still be effective in a field fight.

bards are good now as discoing the bosses is awesome for quick kills.

you should probably make a good swords or mace dex char as well with bushido. this is a good all purpose char and can be used for pvm/pvp.

many of the good artifacts are still useful for suit building such as rune beetle carapace and the library glasses, orny, spirit of the totem.

go for suit builds that are medable with mr and lmc for dexxers and lrc for mages.

Imbuing stuff for people is a great way to make money, though I am too busy using all my ingredients and relic frags re-suiting all my characters. I've only made a little bit of money from it. If you have the desire there is opportunity there.

I have to agree with the posters above me, farming ingredients for imbuing is a very viable way to make gold. Some ingredients for imbuing are selling for about 2mil per 10. There are TONS of variations on the mage template now. I personally run a spellweaving/poison mage and it is very effective. I also have the more traditional necro/mage and a sw/chiv mage that I am currently building. It really all depends on what you're comfortable with. You might even want to check out mysticism. A few of my guildies are running myst mages.

No need to buy a house. There are many available spots in Fel. I wouldn't know about Trammel or Malas, though I assume Malas would have a bunch of spots available as well. Forget about the new areas for now, you have to have loyalty to the gargoyle queen to be able to place.

As a recent return myself, I was surprised at how empty everything was (housing wise). I have found at least 4 large tower spots in Fel. I haven't been to Tram or the new lands much since I spent 99% of my time in Fel before I left. If you need some help placing, I can show you some spots. More than likely, if you are more interested in location than size, you can place something almost anywhere, from moonglow to Paxlair to some isolated island someplace.

Appreciate that offer Liquid - I may take you up on it, but I'll probably end up wandering Fel while reminiscing/reacquainting myself with the landscape. Hopefully I'll come across some of those large tower spots... I had always dreamed of upgrading my small tower to a large one, just never thought it would happen 9 years later
