Okay, background- my account was terminated for having dup'ed items. I am not certain what I had that was dupped and am bothered by that. As a UO player, there is no certain way to identify a dup. This thread's objective- see the title of the thread.
Okay, here's some of the ideas that I have read and some that I think might work. I am not a programmer, and I have no idea how that can be accomplished. I want the problem of dupping to end. I want to be able to buy something without the fear of, "If I buy this, will my account be terminated?" or if I go to an IDOC, "If I pick this up and take it to my house, will I be terminated?"
Idea's:
When a dup'ed item hits the backpack, autodelete it.
When a dup'ed item hits the trade window, autodelete it.
When a dup'ed item hits a vendor, autodelete it.
When a dup'ed item is created, autodelete it.
Or have a daily "cleansing" of dupped items. Or even an hourly cleansing.
If that cannot be done, then there is the idea that I have read about that would be of use: a tool of some kind that will identify if an item is dup'ed. Use it to check an item before it is bought off a vendor or an in game trade.
Just some ideas. I don't know if it could be done, but something really needs to be done.
As far as lessons learned by me: no more buying to resell at a higher price. Buy only what is needed. Nothing more. No need for any house deco.
Over all, it would seem that there are people still irritated by what happened. And then there are the people that just irritated by the subject. Either way that you personally feel, this is a problem and it does need to be fixed. I hope that it can be fixed.

I do alot of shard hopping for vendor stock, and I'm at the point now that I always worried I'll buy something and get banned on my way home. Some vendors are obvious and anyone buying from them deserves what they get, but what about the guy that bought just 1 high end item because he got a good deal on it, then resells on his vendor. I see the item, it's priced below my shards current, so I pick it up. How can I know?

Are the gm's/ Dev's telling uas that unless we are paying full price for a item (which does not prove it's real) that it is our own fault? I go out of my way to verify items are from legit vendors, icq'ing other traders i trust, use search program to check whether or not the vendor is holding multiples of an item stacked up, and basically ignoring anything that i consider too good of a deal. And I could still be banned.

Give us a way to check the item id's, or at least do it for us if we page. what are you doing with your time if not assisting players to insure they are in compliance. If i got something i think might be duped, and i ask for a gm to check, they blow me off; but god forbid i try to sell the item, then its my cheeks in the fire and my acct with a mark against it.

GM SERVICE SHOULD BE MANDATORY TIL A FIX IS FOUND!!!!!

Is this truly the case? Accounts are banned merely for the possession of a single duped item?

Common sense suggests (rather strongly) that the individual player has absolutely no means to determine the validity of any individual item. Players sometimes misprice things on vendors and/or sometimes they value them less than other players might; therefore pricing is a useless guideline.

I absolutely have to assume that the GMs (and those who set policy for them) have common sense. Those GMs are real people. They wouldn't want to go to a yard sale and buy a television only to be pulled over on the way home and arrested because the television turned out to be stolen. It doesn't work that way in real life, and I seriously doubt it works that way in UO.

Logic suggests that they have some other means of investigating things and they base their bans on much stronger evidence than mere possession.

Am I that wrong? Feel free to educate me. I'm afraid, however, that I can't accept mere anecdotal evidence or protestations of innocence; it has been my experience that those who are guilty are rarely willing to admit complicity, and thus a story (or two, or a thousand) from the 'unjustly banned' is ultimately worthless. What I'm wondering about is if anyone has a link to a post or some other type of official communication from 'the powers that be' outlining a policy as misguided as this thread suggests.

You will not find one because one does not exist. Jeremy has said in the past on these very forums that 1 or 2 would not be cause for alarm, but 20? 30? That would certainly raise some eyebrows.

Check the Herald. And yes. possession of dupes can get you banned. We don't ban for one or two - although, as with the Vine Cords, we'll make no guarantees that we won't cause them to disappear - but possessing them in quantity is a good way to get banned.

A runic? No. Two or three? Naw. Thirty? Probably, yeah.

I'm not going to give a specific number for the dupers to use to game the system, but it's high enough that most casual players won't hit it. The "innocent" guy who emailed me over the weekend had 160 or so duped items. Not so innocent. eh?

For the people asking for a list - it depends on the actual dupe. Some only work on specific items, some work on just about anything. The latter kind we can't very well warn you about. I suspect runics were the new hotness this time around because of the buff they got last winter.

ty sheridan for those quotes. I didn't realize they had made an officail or semi official response. I was all about err on the side of caution. I haven't been banned and hope I never am. knowing they are not targeting over 1 or 2 items makes alot of difference. I'll still be checking out every item I buy like it was my a$$ on the line..but at least I know I won't poof over an item i thought was ok. ty

Edited in: Woot my sig finally works!!! recovered it from my long lost acct.

Im not really sure they can implement a system like that. But it would be cool if they could. On a side note...

Im sure if your account was terminated it was for more than one DUPED item. I have two val hammers, not sure if they are legit or not, but I bought them off a small time vendor outside of Luna. Now I cant garuntee that they wernt duped but I cant say they were.

Now Im also smart enough to go okay, if I have 50-60 of the toughest hammers to get in my bank, they all have to be legit and not duped...Which if I did buy that many, or MADE that many then I know I am probably buying duped items which I have been warned on stratics and the daily log in that buying or having these items can result in suspension and deletion of my account...

Caveat emptor.
