i know sa just came out and its a little soon to be talking about another expansion but
i cant help but think a pirate expansion would be amazing
revamp the boating system
add new boats
make guild flags for boats
add like a pirate island
make treasure hunting more relevant
but i dont like the idea of adding guns
make boarding ships possible
make raiding towns in possible
i dont know i just see alot of potential with the boats and large ocean present in ultima

The boating system cannot be revamped so long ast the 2d client is still in use... sad but true.

If they made a pirate expansion, it would have to be new client only (something which SA should have been) (can the SA client boating system even be updated?)

2D won't let the boat system not suck, so not happening. Sorry.

When KR was still earlier in development, this came up. Basically, the boating system is the form of housing system being told to redraw tile by tile as it moves on the map (one created the other though I forget which created which, I think figuring out boats let them figure out houses originally).

In order to change the way boating works, they would have to take boats OUTSIDE Of the mutli-tile system they use in the 2d client. Basically, there's no way to separate the system between the two client, so in order to have a functional update to boats, they would have to be done in the Gamebryo client UNHINDERED by the 2d client, and as long as the 2d client is still in use, this can't happen (since the servers are also tied to the 2d client system).

So it isn't an issue of the devs not wanting to create a pirate expansion or more sea-based content, it's that they are severely limited in what they would be able to do.

And hence once again the subtle whisper in our ears that it is time to move forward and not dwell on the past.

But will the community let us? Stay tuned...

It's just stupid code. I'm all for boats you see. Aside from the coding aspect You cant very well put (large) boats in the current lands... anywhere. The seas, docks, ports... anything to do with the ocean just isn't big enough to support the system. Plenty of room in new lands yet to be pixelated, plenty of room for fiction to clear up the fuzzies. Porting between two clients is also possible.. ya know?

That might be true on a theoretical level, but might not be on a practical or licensing level.

The devs have been mighty fast to ixnay some ideas.

It's true only in that you're in a "weak link" situation that you can port things from 2d into a newer client relatively easily (or do them in easier and more advanced ways), however you CANNOT port most of the new technology back to the 2d client from the new client.

2d will not have a zoom feature, it's limited to the "tile-based" system it uses, it will never have the same particle effects that newer clients have and so on.

Basically, attempting to port certain grqaphical and interaction advances possible with the Gamebryo client back to the 2d client would be like trying to port Oblivion to the SNES.

Yes thats a good point. Porting would not be a smooth transition at all. Especially recalling back and forth. It would be like jumping into a different game. Alot of work for very little payoff.
