Idea and Technical Question - Temporary Forges

I am, at heart, an RP'er. I am also, most of the time, a miner as well.

Now, I must admit that I absolutely LOVE the utility of my fire beetle. Having said that, I absolutely HATE the look of it, and/or riding it around. However, in today's UO, unless you are recall mining it's almost a necessity unless you are anxious to go back to the days of dragging piles of ore to the nearest forge.

I was wondering - Would it be possible to create a recipe that requires Blacksmithing and Tinkering to make a temporary forge you can place on the ground that would last, say, 30 minutes or so many smelting attempts? I think it'd have to be mobile and relatively light, though, to prevent movement or pathing exploits.

The technical part is, I don't know if UO is capable of that kind of temporary timed item placement. If you leave items on the ground, they eventually disappear.

Actually, better yet, make some sort of portable forge that can be kept in your bag (Make it require the necessary skills to be able to use is) and say it's a magical smelter or something...

Just an idea..

This made me laugh. Thanks :)

Just curious, are these any different from pack horses?

It sounds an awful lot like a ridable neon pack horse.

Items can have timers, and as far as I'm aware, there's nothing "special" about forges or beetles.
Didn't there used to be the bugged movable forges?
Something like that with the timer should work.

this has scripting written all over it, even if it were temporary i could see this still being manipulated.

Not really any more exploitable than a forge that follows you around, or that you can somehow sit on without 3rd degree burns.

Fire Beetles don't function like pack animals - They can only be used as mobile smelter, so you have to carry your own ingots or have another pack animal with you, like a packhorse or a rune beetle. And that is fine, because without a pack animal and max strength you can still carry 2K+ ingots on your person.. Since my miner is also a tinkerer, he can tinker shovels as he needs them on the fly, so it's a lot less weight.

True, it could be, but scripters already exploit recall mining, thanks to LRC.

Just because scripters can exploit it (They can exploit anything, really) doesn't mean it shouldn't be considered, otherwise, I'd say get rid of LRC. But then they could just script grabbing reagents as needed.

Yeah.. and straddling a beetle that is partly made of FIRE must be having some long term repercussions to my characters ability to produce offspring..

... Was the Fire Beetle Draconi's idea? Riding FIRE? Has his name all over it.. :D

That's right! Completely forgot about that.. I remember in my short time on Great Lakes in the first year of UO, mining near Trinsic, there was a guy I used to always mine with (cover one another when PK's came) that had one and he showed it to me. Said a GM gave it to him (probably not true, but still).

Yeah... Bring back THAT bug!

Additionally, as a refinement of this idea, weather it's a portable magical smelting box that has a limited number of uses or a temporary forge you place on the ground, make the recipe to make them a reward for the library collections, or the end of a long chain of quests that require a lot of resources to complete. I'm talking mega money/resource sink. Part of my personal bias that thinks more of those are needed in UO... But that's another topic. I'd give the culmination of my meager amounts of time, which is 100K+ ingots and 100K+ boards of various types, and 1 million gold just to be able to mine efficiently without the use of Fire Beetle.

Portable forges was a bug that was fixed soon after it apeared.
Was a nice idea but failed and was the main reason the "gold bug" was created.
The Fire Beetle was created for miners in response to our request for a easer way to mine without recalling a million times to a forge.
In the early days the GM's took pity on many shards and placed forges around the land in spots too far out. They encouraged players to open their homes and place forges for player use too.

While I understand your care for how it looks I see no use for any change. The animal works fine and contrary to scripting a bug use is good for the game.

Scripters are gunna use the most efficent path with the least amount of movements to get the job done. The bug is not one of them... I have yet to see a scripter use a Fire Beetle to mine with.

Then make it something you have to charge first with a ton of reagents and is only good for X uses, based on skill levels of Tinkering, Magery, Smithing, and Carpentry. Scripters won't use something that costs resources or money to use, when their current methods work fine for free, or something that requires certain skills to use if it hinders their templates. I'm all about a good resource sink.

No? Ok.. Fine. Since it IS only really about appearance and a potential money sink.. How about this..

Make it so you can buy a a horse with a portable forge on a wagon behind him being pulled around like a cart that functions exactly like a Fire Beetle. Or make the cart itself craftable and can be attached to any mountable animal (Or 2 animals, if it's going to look like a big wagon/cart) with a movement penalty. That way, it looks better, and you still have to dismount to use it, keeping it inefficient for scripters.

Anything is preferable to an orange beetle made of fire.

Portable forges did exist from an exploit and as far as I know some still exist. However, I believe the GMs' stance on those have always been to ban people who have them.

As a fellow role-player I can understand your desire to not ride the big fire beetle. I have a hard time bringing myself to ride them around as well. I like your idea, I just don't know that I feel that it is worth development time when there are so many other critical mechanics that need attention.

BUT why can lumberjacks make boards out of heavy logs with just an axe without moving to somewhere (and even get the resource much faster)? .....and a miner must drag or recall the heavy ore to somehwere to get a few ingots?

that makes me laugh

How about making a 2 control slot pet called an "anvil head land shark" that is a mobile anvil

Why? We already have portable forges in fire beetles. This would just be something for people who don't want to use them.

Lets add to the necro summons. A Pot Belly Minion. Works like a forge but like other minion don't recall but can gate. Hated when they fixed the fire beetle ghost still working. Damn thing can melt ore into ingots but gets taken out by a corpser. I run a combat miner with boyl picks. Used to get a lot done mining the Destard dragon hole floor for rare ores while killing the spawn. Was all before the GD made Destard the new barren Shame.

Could go the star trek method with a granit rock. Drop a granite on the ground and heat it up for a duration with the new Phaser Wand. Smelt away.

If you have one don't tell anyone. They're still highly bannable. This is an item that doesn't sell for gold though. it's usually a cash only thing.

Why not a forge addon deed that can be double clicked and you select a packhorse?

Once done the horse then has a forge in his pack? This forge weighs nothing (the benefit) but disappears when the packhorse is stabled (downside), thus making an addon that can be sold as it must be reapplied?

Why use this over a firebeetle you may ask? It frees up more control slots for use of additional packanimals for even longer mining trips.

My guess is because that is how it works in real life and when UO was initially released the creators tried to keep a feeling of realism while still maintaining the fantasy setting. Remember things like actual house keys locking interior doors and whatnot? A lot of that "realism" got weeded out throughout the years for various reasons.

On top of that, ingots were always more useful. You make weapons and armor with ingots and back then you could only make furniture and bows with boards. It made sense, at least back then, that ingots required a little more effort to obtain.

IR logs are taken to a sawmill and ore is taken to a smetler. No where do they do this in the same spot that they gather the resource.

Could always add these to Camping skill. Have it so at different camping skill levels you get a more diverse site. like 50 gets you a small forge and log out spot. 75 gets an anvil/forge/logout/cooking spot. 90 gives you a all that and an arcane circle and gm camping could give all the above but has a +1 arcane circle spot like brit bank has. Maybe even add other crafting addons like looms, soulforge etc. Maybe base the type of campsite on what other skills the camper has.

I could certainly get behind giving camping a raison d'etre. Obviously, you'd need the supporting skills to get the appropriate mobile object as well, but that's just good common sense.

A fine idea! We can have genuine, player-made gypsy camps, or just wandering guilds. Or carnivals (Read: Carnies)!

Now if only we could have temporary tents...

Wagon idea sound good!

Esp with the smooth boat movement booster that also allows things like moving wagons.
