I wonder what Richard Garriott really thinks now

I wonder if he even plays his own game... i know he doesnt run it anymore, and all that, but with the way it has become, is he even interestedin it anymore?

I really don't know.

Ultima is, after all, Garriot's magnum opus, a world that he created and cultivated for much of his life.

But then, it also made him rich, and he may have moved on to other things.

But I do think he has to be a little sad over what UO has become.

Why, exactly, is he supposed to be sad?

[/ QUOTE ]
Obviously because it's still running after 10 years when it was only suppose to last 1. That's something to be sad about.

obviously you dont understand that when someone creates something, they expect it to be one thing,a nd when someone else takes that one thing, or buys it, or whatever, and they completely change it into something else, it is like taking a piece of you, and twisting it.....Richard Garriott stepped out of UO around the same time some changes took place, changes that he probably saw were going to do this to his world,a nd he didnt want a part of it, i am sure he made a ton of money off of it, but i am also sure that he has an opinion.

what my question is, What is his opinion.... and does he still play now and then?

G

Guest
You don't understand that Richard Garriot consider UO a failed experiment and had problems with it from the very beginning.

As for his opinion, I would absolutly love to hear it. I seriously doubt it's the one you think it is.

Not to speak for the man, but I can assure you he’s really still quite fond of, and interested in Ultima Online.

Even so much that he came to our Austin Town Hall and spoke to the assembled crowd, did interviews, and signed autographs.

I even had the honor to stand on stage with him and accept a plaque from Governor Winfield of PaxLair.

regardless of what it has become, it has survived 10 years. it is his legacy whether he likes it or not. in looking on the brightside, it survives without any visual marketing plan in gaming magazines and in looking at the how old are you post of last week, has a pretty mature playing base.

despite the problems perceived by some on these boards, it should be rated a success.

who says his vision for it was the correct one anyway?

as far as a social experiement, it shows a good cross section of human nature, from the greedy to the caring. Those who are aggessive and those who are not, and so on.

imho.

Ever since I watched this thing, it helped me see how much of Richard Garriott's influence lives on in the existing Ultima Online:

Parts of his house are like Hythloth or somesh*t.

It's a long video but it's insightful.

Thank you, god i would have loved to be there, and hear about the future plans of uo, because though there are some aspects of the game i would change, i cant seem to quit for the life of me, it is like what was said in that old devs post, this is a dangerous addiction that has been introduced.

I was there!
Didn't get a dad blasted tee shirt,
BUT I do have a poster with Autos from Drac, Leurocian, Jeremy, and LB himself!(He didn't sign it that way though.) Richard was mainly focussed on his new game (Tabula Ratha)soon to be released at the time, and making himself ready to be part of privatized space flight(we talked about performing parabolas over the Gulf of Mexico), but we did have great chuckles about early adventuring days in UO,and he listened with great interest and astonishment about how the playerbase has taken some ownership of the dream and continues to carry it forward.

There was an interview done by UO radio, now defunct, with all of the dignitaries present, with the exception of Jeremy, if memory serves. I have no idea if there is any way to access it or if it still exists anywhere, but it is a good listen if you are so inclined.

THIS is the very stuff that builds community, shared experiences, memories, goals, dreams, pints of bitter
, or whatever might strike the collective fancy. If you have not sought out info on a player meeting, or a Townhall in your area for this year I recommend you do so. You wont regret the effort.

BTW*smiles*
Jer, TX Townhall is still listed as TBA. Are we even looking at coinciding with Gamecon in Austin again this year? The physical location marker looks annoyingly close to those Yankees up there in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. I'd come anyway, but I'd like it less. The uh, Tequila based concoctions are soooooo much better on a patio in Austin. Just sayin'. *shrugs*

Ya'll have a great day now, hear.

*edited because it wasn't just so, and probably still isn't :p*

Man, i just wish i'd played the game when Lord British was in it! I've seen some youtube video of LB dying to a firefield when he forgot to turn invulnerability on (rofl), think it's on wiki or something. Has anyone played Tabula Raza? I'd be willing to give it a go purely because this guy is a genius!

Like anything that's been around over a decade, UO has had numerous mistakes made, fixed and made again in other contexts. UO was an experiment from the begining and it pretty much kicked off a genre of gaming.

I'm sure Richard Gariott is proud of UO dispite any mistakes he or others have made on the game. The simple fact that the game is still around is a testament to how awesome it really is.

I think it's also noteworthy that UO still remains revolutionary and unique after over a decade of development and competition. Richard Gariott definitely had something to do with that, but so have numerous other devs (some of which none of us have ever heard of) over the years. An idea is only as good as its execution. An experiment is only as good as its adaptiveness to player reactions.

I don't think Richard Gariott ever expected players to take on anti-social roles killing people at random and such. I don't think he foresaw the lengths players would take to organize with one another. Early UO didn't have guilds. Early UO didn't have much punishment for murdering people except that it would make your karma very low (untill it rolled over and made you a glorious lord lol).

UO was an experiment that turned into something much bigger.

*nods* I was at the Austin shin dig as well. Mr. Garriot was very gracious and interested in where the game is now. He sat and chatted about the old days of UO with my mother for quite some time.

Flutter, good luck with that. From what I saw, he would be quite a catch. *winks*

I'm talking about before those systems existed... You're talking about UO systems that were designed to adapt to player behavior.

When UO was new, people would add a guild tag to their player name because there wasn't a guild system. People would page on pks for killing them. It was bizarre. Lots of times when I'd kill someone, they'd ask me why I killed them.

The bounty system wasn't in when UO was young. It was eventually abolished because people would game the system to make money. Either way, everything I was referring to was well before the bounty system. Possibly a year before.

i have to agree, the code wouldnt have been put there that allowed one player to attack another player unless it was intended so, this was not a glitch..... but back to the dallas convention.... please say there is a dallas convention coming !

[/ QUOTE ]

I wasn't saying the ability to attack other players was a glitch. I was saying that I don't think LB anticipated some of the anti-social behavior that came along with the ability to attack other players. I think it's pretty obvious if you look at how pvp-oriented systems evolved in the first 2 years of UO that the game was adapting to player behavior. I'm almost certain that I've read LB quoted as saying that they had to adapt to player behaviors too.

LB wanted you to be able to RP a thief. He wanted you to be able to RP a murderor. I don't think he anticipated some of the griefing that comes along with allowing these behaviors. That's why trammel was created. It was created to allow those who didn't want to pvp to avoid it entirely.

I think it was pretty much a given that most of the people I killed in early UO didn't want to be killed. Sure, every now and then you encounter a guy that's just asking to be killed, but most of them were just playing the game.

I think I will matte and frame this and hang it over my monitor.

Actually, like unto the internet itself the game was designed around complete freedom of movement for player interaction of ALL kinds. The coding of inhibitors didn't come until later.

He did, but not endlessly. In the UO Radio interview someone mentions, he talks about this. How another player was picking on this same new girl (character) stealing from her constantly her while she was trying to find help about the game.

Garriott told the guy to stop what he was doing because (as you can see obviously) it's mean. The guy was playing an evil character though (fair enough) and after Garriott told him to stop another time, he basically responded along the lines of "I'm obeying the game's rules and following them in my endevour to be an evil character". There was no right or wrong about it. Of course thanks to imbalance and a stupid EA decision, we now have Trammel... But either way, it was hard to anticipate such anti-social behaviour, because there weren't many other games to gauge it.

lol, yepper. I think the man has reached a plateau where he can do what he really wants to do because he has no "need" to anything other than something he loves.

Um, well fulfilling contractual obligations aside, of course.

G

I don't know what he thinks of todays UO but I have read in numerous interviews that he thinks of the early UO as a "failed social experiment". He naively thought most players would want to be the avatar (like in the single player games) and a few would be killers but player justice would take care of it.

Oh well. Live and learn.

Id like to quote garriot from Austin townhall.

Well he also has upstanding web citizens throwing out proposals at the mention of his name...and his castles, and activities, and fortune, and...

Some guys just lead lives different enough by an order of magnitude that we simply fail to comprehend. Personally I kind of get stuck on the , "Yeah, how am I gonna wrap this thing..." train of thought. I mean is there a whole section of giftbags at Hallmark that I have somehow missed? Would it have to come in a yellow container with that funny symbol on the front? Cause, thats just not gonna go with the card I picked out!

I met LB once... just a chance encounter in Disney World right before he left Origin/EA. He was a very gracious guy, especially since I was disturbing his vacation with my geek-out.

I've given up hope that he would ever return. I actually had hoped at some point he would buy the rights for Ultima back from EA. But I guess he chose to go to space instead. Can't say I blame him.

But the question: What's he thinking now? After reading how botched the last Soyuz capsule return to Earth was and how dangerous a trip it was for the crew... he might be thinking: "OH double whopper with cheese, that's MY ride!"

[/ QUOTE ]

I might as well just make my prediction... "This just in, a space shuttle has crashed somewhere over the Atlantic. Early reports are that a Richard Garriott was on board. His father was in NASA and Garriott produced fantasy role playing video games. We're not sure how he ended up on board, but I am sure the Trekkies will be making a lot of noise about this. More news to follow on the rest of the ill-fated crew. Actually, we'll pretty much spend the next 3 weeks talking about this historic space flight that ended in catastrophe."

To those envious of the guy, think again. Space travel isn't that cool. What do you do? Oh look, the Earth. It looks just like that photo taken from space that I saw. That is so cool. Oh look, the Moon. Oh look, stars. Oh cool. Neat. Wow. Jeez. Awe-inspiring. Heavenly. I know how Armstrong must have felt. I am going to be so different now. Wow. Cool. Oh neat. Oh, that is the Earth. Oh cool, North America. Look a space station. I'm not allowed to go in there. Wow. Asia. That is the Great Wall of China. Neat Wow Neat Cool. I die now in fiery crash. Darn, shucks. Hell. Dang. UO had resurrections!!

Big stink. I'll pass on the trip and the news reports later and just watch the Royals play for the Series.

To the OP. Richard Garriot was a little sad when he got PKed by some degenerate, then he moved on to become part of the future newstory of the year to be included in every Class of '09 yearbook across the country!! YAY!!
