There waaaay to strong, and I belive that they should have stayed on the test shard. I belive it was uo's way to get old players to return to uo, but I wouldnt doubt that more people will leave. Every where I go its greater dragons, last night at doom there was 10 greater dragons at once....And even on this forum the last 2 pages are basically about "my dragon", "Whats the new dragons stats" There overated and I diissslike them Im sorry :/ NO BASHING PLZ

Seriously though, the Greater-Dragon-Hype will fade. Right now it's the hot new thing in town and the topic on every tamers mind but in a few weeks time things will return to normal. The Greater Dragon won't go away ofcourse but a good tamer uses the pet best suited for a given situation; Let me assure you that won't always be the Dragon.

right now Tamers got a new toy. Last time a nice shiny new toy came into the game, it wasn't for Tamers, next new shiny toy...won't be for tamers either. To everything there is a season.. and this season its Tamers!

Thx devs! I like the new toy.. I have others in the toybox.. but everyone deserves a present now and then!

To be completely honest I’m not all that thrilled with them either.

I still have the first dragon I tamed nearly seven years ago, way before pet bonding, and my primary hunting dragon is almost as old. For years I have complained that our loyal old dragon comrades, like mine, had been short changed in the initial AoS rollout and have been left further behind by the powerful new pets introduced with each new arms-race expansion. What was once the most powerful pet in Sosaria had become decidedly second class.

So EA finally “does something” about dragons; they make a new super powered dragon which puts our existing dragons even farther down the food chain. That was not exactly what I had in mind. If “dragons” were going to be buffed up then we should have some quests that would allow us to bring our old pets along too. Yeah, I know; they are just ones and zeros, but they are MY ones and zeros!

The other thing that I find unsettling about these new dragons is that they seem to have a larger than normal range for stats. This promotes “farming” to try to get the “perfect” pet. [old fart mode]Back in the day we took any dragon that would listen to our sales pitch and was darn happy to have it.[/old fart mode]

Ditto.
I haven't even tamed one yet. I'd have to get rid of someone in my stables and I'm not ready to do that.

Meh, from one ole fart to another, back in the day, animal lore gump was so basic & lacking in information that we really had no idea apart from performance whether it was a good'un or a bad'un.

@ OP, I like the new draggies. I like my cu sidhes, my rune beetles, my bake kitsunes, my reptalons (yes, plural), and yes, I like my old draggies and my old mares and my old white wyrms, too. Heck, I especially like my well trained giant rat!

Give me a new toy and I'm going to have fun pushing it to its limits & mine, too. Once I've got a good feel for the new critter, I can relax back into my usual best and/or most fun pet for the job mode.

Well I love the new dragons, they make taming feel *almost* like it use to be. I've been playing off and on since UO launched, and back in 1997 I had a GM tamer on Atl.

That was back when tamers were so rare, you basically could count on 2 hands all the GM tamers on the shard.

Back then fire breath usually 1-2 hit killed you, same as the new dragons, (though once you tamed them and left the dungeon, they hit as hard as a chicken lol, and if their fire breath didnt hit before their target died, it would lose it forever). But having a 1-2 hit walking cannon was nice.

Then they fixed that bug, and white wyrm walk speed was like paragons when they were told to attack, PvP was great with them! and they looted corpses for you!

Then came the nerf where they halved all pet and monster hps, which made it much harder to keep pets alive, even though monsters were weaker too.

Then came the uber mounts, etc etc.

Owning a dragon now gives a similar sense of awe, since the things are so darn powerful, and if you get one with near 1000 hps, they fire for the same as a wild reptalon, which is pretty nice. I haven't pvped in a long time though, so I havent tested it out (hate the new item based pvp) I liked wearing a death robe after being resed, and jumping back into the battle with a chaos shield and a DP kryss
, and since pet speed was *balanced* pets are a joke in pvp, unless you use a pet ball gank.

but I digress, these dragons are the best thing to happen to taming in years!

Waaay back in the day, we didn't have anything from animal lore to help us.

-----
A dragon lives in caves and dungeons and eats meat. It is sometimes used for it's hides and it's dragons blood.

It looks replete as if it has just eaten.
-----

I used to use anatomy and eval int on critters I was training to see how high their dex and int had trained up to. Ment they gained in skills.

For a long time, if you saw a mare you tamed it if you could (they where that rare) no matter how many times it breathed on you and killed you then flew up on the ledges. Could tame on a ledge if it was in required distance. No line of sight issues. I remember taming many out far east of Delucia in the overland spawn. I also remember having to run a very long ways back to town to get my rez and grabbing a few regs to go try again. All that for a whopping 30k (which was a lot of gold back then).

Dragons where much easier to tame in a group. Go in and get one isolated then keep on taming the lot of them.

As for the modern Greater Dragons, well they are good tanks. If I want uber damage I still use my rune beetle and kitsune (the kitsune tanks almost as good, just needs more vetting.) And I'll never give up my old dragon and wyrm that I've had since way before bonding or even personal stable slots.

I have several old pets that have made it this many years intact.

Oh, and the bad old days of tamers people talk about every now and then. I have a pic from back then. Couldn't tell you how many of the critters I had in this screenshot. We where going Balron killing, those that survived where kept for us or selling.

No worries. Not everyone has to like the greater dragon. Personally I do.

I too think the difficulty of taming one also brings back memories of days long ago. I stopped playing UO 6 months ago just waiting for something new. The new expansion pack has been delayed again so off I went to Pirates of the Caribbean online. Nice game, but when I read SUPER DRAGON - blam, here I am. Some thing new for me to do in my all-time favorite game.

My all time favorite beastie was the Dragon. Then suddenly another beastie joined my favorite ranks - the Fire Steed! Those are the most delicate beastie nowadays. At one point of time they rocked. A pair could bring down anything in the game. Oh well, maybe the Fire Steeds will have their day in the sun again.

Yes, I am a tamer 120 lore 115 vet and 120 taming I just dont like the fact how insanely tuff they are, but I agree with everything your saying.

Thanks for the trip down memory late, Hinotori!

I was a mare, drag & ww seller in that time period. I loathe icq to this day if only because it was literally a constant stream of "OMG I need a mare/5 drags/10 wws for tonights guild hunt!" I've long since lost screenies of my pets lined up along the water at Brit Bank, though after a few shard downs/reverts I tended to keep no more than one or two at bank purely for display purposes.

Blocked spawn, especially for mares, was a daily issue and it was often controlled by one particular person or more often an entire guild who would come down and defend the mare spawn once they unblocked it at their convenience.

As well as some long lasting friendships & alliances, often having to fight other tamers before *winning* the chance to tame the rare spawning Terra Keep mare certainly led to some creative templates...

Vix has always been a straight mage/tamer, but Nico would become provo/tamer/mage specifically for no fail voke (as it was then at 100) on the balron that I'd lead out from Terra so I had monster back up. Balrons were scary then...especially when a bard with no chance of failing and no skill delay timer was keeping it interested in you.

Invis taming; through the wall taming; summon creature on the other side of the wall and have it aggro your tame so you could tame without taking aggro; no line of sight issues; some even blocked critters in to tame even though that was illegal even then.

I don't miss having to remember which stable I stabled particular pets at or some oik killing the npc stablemaster so that all pets stabled with him/her were lost forever. And I really do not miss unlimited follower slots; or ornery ("too many owners") pets.

Do you remember "calming" mares by releasing them and retaming them until you received the magical & elusive "You appear to have calmed the beast" message?

I love my pets. I've shared adventures with them and that's something irreplaceable to me. It's just one reason why I have so many damn tamers. I don't willingly abandon my pets...I simply make new tamers to accomodate all the new ones.

pet ownership used to be much more elite than it is now. unlimited, first come, first serve stables, without universal support. endless followers. but no bonding, or pet balls, or ninjitsu, or bushido
. the only real event I can think of where tamers were nerfed completely was the savages campaign. then AOS hit, and the savages became so weak. well, there was the skeletal dragons...of course, those were nerfed as well. tamers have it pretty easy. the only class that has it easier is probably the archer. then again, many tamers are now archers, as well. funny, how that works...

anyway, for many tamers, a Cu will be more appropriate. before the new dragons, the Cu, and Rune beetle/bake kitsune were the main options. others might have used two bakes, or perhaps a pack of frenzied, but most would use two options. the new dragons present a third option with the right rolls. they pretty much replaced the reptalon completely, although, I haven't checked out how well they do in pvp (reptalon's nerve strike like special pretty much sucks in pvm). but all other tameables have their perks.
