I have posted this question in the warriors forum a week ago, it has been read a hundred times but I did not get any replies. Maybe the question is rubbish, but I would really be grateful if someone could at least tell me why :). Thank you very much....

Hi,
I started back in 98, left around AOS and came back 3 years ago so I cannot say I am a new player, but I was never much of a fighter.
Also I don´t know much about the different modern templates (my fighters were without chiv, bush or necro until recently - simply used to like the old style).

When looking at loot I find things that some others sometimes consider valuable but I don´t really know why. So I finally came up with 2 examples and would ask you to look at them and tell me if they are valuable for certain templates and if so, why.I chose the following cause they are examples for many others I don´t find a use for.

1.) Bow ( 5 properties - relic if unraveled)
Spell Channeling
Mage Weap -21
HSL 42
HLL 44
FC -1
DI 48

Now I know this bow has no SSI and is of no use for an archer. But is there any template this bow would benefit? Mage tamer helping pets, or mage doing extra damage? Or is it simply a bunch of unfitting mods?

2.) Radiant Scimitar (4 properties - could be imbued further)
Spell Channeling
Mage Weapon - 22
HLL 60
DCI 12
FC -1

Ok, if I got it right, mage weapons are only good for defensive purposes, correct? You don´t actually want to deal damage. So I guess the HLL is rather wasted? And is this a decent mage weapon? I could max the DCI and even make it -20. if I lower the HLL I could put another property on. If so what would be useful?

I am not asking to make great weapons out of these. I only want to understand what´s desirable for certain templates.
If they are junk simply tell me but please add why.

Thanks a lot,
Aris of Europa

P.S: ooops I have one last question if you don´t mind: does vamp form work well for archers (with leeching I mean)? Thanks

Hey there...

Here is what I think!
(I returned 6 months ago and Iam still working on my imbuer... ontop I never really played a fighter type char just like you... so take all that into account when you read my answer :) )

What I have found is that using dull copper hammers will give you weapons with 1 mod at 100%.. so those weapons are good bases for imbuing if you want to save on mats cost.

Looking at those 2 weapons you listed there shows me that none of them have any mods at max intensity. So if I where to imbue ontop if them I might aswell imbue on a normal GM made weapon with 40% DI.

The weapons I keep (And sell on my vendor in Luna) are weapons with 1 or 2 mods at max intensity for instance: (All with 40DI)

SSI 30
Mage -20
DCI 15
HCI 15
FC1
SC (Without -1FC)
Super Slayers
Some HIT spells.

Most other mods are fairly cheap to imbue so having them as "start" mod is not as desireble as the ones listed above.

So back to your weapons... I would unravel them ;)

I know the intensities are quite high, and it seems a waste to unravel them, coz I have a chest of similar high intensity items that I can't bear to unravel.

However, try as I might, it's hard to find a use for them as they are.

Having mage weap + sc means only some form of mage hybrid can make full use of them. But the -1 FC is a big penalty to mages.

No SSI, no hit proc and FC penalty means it is not going to be useful in pvp.

Even in pvm as a tamer,
No luck, plus the fc penalty, makes it undesirable. Any extra damage it will do will pale in comparison with your pet's damage.

If the intention is to use it as a defensive weapon, there are arties like swords of prosperity that are much better.

For normal mages, a slayer spell book or scrappers is much better.

That being said, my mage has a mw, sc, -1 fc mystic bow that I used during the moonglow invasion to pierce the dark wisp and berserker daemons' force fields.

My peerless killing tamer has a mw, sc, hci bow along with 50 bushido so that I can use perfection to boost my luck to the stratosphere levels. (Together with my luck suit and luck sculpture). Unequip after I get perfection (or as close as I can get).

Neither of the weps are worth the storage space they're taking up in your house. Either smelt them or unravel them.

i must agree with everyone else about the weps. the neg fc is an immediate turnoff. and since no one has addressed your final question, the answer is yes, vamp form works very well for archers. esp combined with bushido and chiv. of course a heavy-hitting, fast bow is a must for it to leech enuf. i switched my old archer over to that temp and thru in some sw and he is a blast.

...peace.

Well, thanks a lot everyone!

Again, I wasn´t posting these weaps cause I thought they were good in any way. They were only an example of items with relatively high mods that didn´t seem to fit and I was wondering if there are templates that could actually use them.

At least harlequins post (about the bow his tamer uses to reach perfection luck bonus) has proved for me that there are templates that use "special" weapons for certain situations.

If you allow me one last question to clarify the mage weapon thing:

On my shard I see expensive (millions of gold) weapons being sold on vendors that - more or less - look like this:

SC -1 (sometimes no -1)
MW -20
DCI 15
maybe some hit spell

Is this all a good mage weapon needs? Or is there more to it?

Most of the time one handed I think.
Is this because mages in PvP use pots as well?

I don´t PvP, I enjoy crafting and enhancing loot and this is why i want to know more about the things people actually use and have a demand for.

Again, thank you all very much.

Hi there. Allow me to throw my 2 cents in.
Mage weapon essentials
1-no negative casting,,,,this is a must
2-D.C.I. 15 or more,,you wan to get dci as close to 70 to be H.L.D. proof
3-all bows [mage weapon or not] must be balanced ,,,this is a must,,if you are not chugging then you should have your head examined.
4-mage weapon - 20,,,and wear the +20 magery ring

What many are doing nowadays is using a dull copper runic hammer to make
`twinkling scimitar` until they get one with 19+ D.C.I. then the imbuer drops the D.I. to 1% first thing then add the spell channel, mage weapon -20,,then fc to negate the - casting that is default, whatever weight points are left usually are thrown back into di,,not that it matters because dexxers aren't too concerned if a mage hits them for a whopping 4 damage anyways.
If there were room left on it [which there isn't] I personally would throw on hit lightning to it as well if it were possible.

Anyways,,,i hope the info helps.

Most of these people are thinking from a pvp-only or solo PvM mindset.

My hybrid PvM mage would love the bow.

When I go to Ilshenar spawns or peerless with friends, my mage (which has Chiv and GM tactics) typically casts two EVs or Earth eles (depending on the spawn/peerless type), and equips her SC mage weapon bow (with jewelry to offset the magery). FC -1 means little if all you're casting is summons and heals.

I found that I NEVER got looting rights without the bow, trying to use spells for damage, but ALWAYS got rights using a SC mage weapon bow. It also allows you to conserve mana. My suit is a 100% LRC, 70s resists, 40% LMC, suit that is effectively FC 0 with the -1 bow equipped (And some mana regen). Since I wasn't having to stop to actively meditate, I was getting more damage in against the bosses that have no slayer with the bow, than with spells, even with GM scribe and 40% SDI off equipment. Heck, I was doing more DPS with the bow than with my two summons combined.

And, of course, some things you just can't use summons against (Grizzle, Parox, the Bedlam champ, etc.).

Note that this character couldn't get looting rights or kill credit against Melissa, in the event 2-3 years ago, using spells and summons, but eventualyl did so just using arrows. And, later, got really good at slicing Melissa to ribbons with swords of prosperity. I couldn't keep up with the dragons with spells, but could with mage weapons.
