I seem to recall reading that you can insure items so as not to lose them when you die, how do i do this??

Click the option to auto-renew insurance. This way your stuff will be automatically re-insured after a death.
Keep plenty of gold in your bank box. 600gp for each insured item is deducted from you bank each time an item is insured. If you don't have enough gold in the bank, auto-renew will not auto-renew.
