I had no idea how heavy stones were, until now...

Well, at least I got your attention.... Anyway, I've been fishing a LOT lately, and noticed that one of my deep water chests was holding 20,318 Stones. Maybe I'm just gettin old, but the fish here are just plain heavy and I think that's why it caught my attention. Anyway, it made me wonder what the limit of a secure actually was - so I look'd it up (well, I tried to) and I must say that I was just flat astonished at how much weight my poor chars were actually carrying around...

According to the UOGuide (which I just love, btw) - I quote:

A stone is 14 pounds (~6.35029318 kilograms). A character can potentially walk with over 600 stones (when using items with strength enhancing properties along with magical buffs such as the Bless spell), which translates to 8,400 pounds (~3.8 metric tons).

So according to the UOGuide (which is almost never wrong) my 467 Stone bard has been known, on occasion, to carry the equivalent of 6538 pounds! Now, considering that an 89 ford mustang weighs 2,750 pounds, I could carry 2 of them (at 5500 pounds) and have stamina enough to pile a good half a dozen relatives in 'em 'ta boot (but I get to pick the relatives)... Sheesh - Newfound respect there, for sure...

Well, at least that's what I was thinkin' until I saw what a packy has to carry.... Again, I quote:
On the other hand, the 1600 stones a pack animal can carry translates to 22,400 pounds, or just over 10 metric tons.

I swear on all I know to be true, that I will NEVER EVER again complain about the capacity of any beast of burdon... 10 metric tons people...

And you wonder why they occasionally "wander off".... No mystery now.

soldier with a keen interest in birds: Where'd you get the coconuts?
King Arthur: We found them.
1st soldier with a keen interest in birds: Found them? In Mercia? The coconut's tropical!
King Arthur: What do you mean?
1st soldier with a keen interest in birds: Well, this is a temperate zone
King Arthur: The swallow may fly south with the sun or the house martin or the plover may seek warmer climes in winter, yet these are not strangers to our land?
1st soldier with a keen interest in birds: Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?
King Arthur: Not at all. They could be carried.
1st soldier with a keen interest in birds: What? A swallow carrying a coconut?
King Arthur: It could grip it by the husk!
1st soldier with a keen interest in birds: It's not a question of where he grips it! It's a simple question of weight ratios! A five ounce bird could not carry a one pound coconut.
King Arthur: Well, it doesn't matter. Will you go and tell your master that Arthur from the Court of Camelot is here?
1st soldier with a keen interest in birds: Listen. In order to maintain air-speed velocity, a swallow needs to beat its wings forty-three times every second, right?
King Arthur: Please!
1st soldier with a keen interest in birds: Am I right?

Some things in video games can withstand scrutiny and are the better for it.

Some things however cannot, and inventory, in every video game I've ever played or been exposed to, is on the "cannot" list.

Well said, devil99... However, I must take issue with your 1st soldier. While he may indeed have had a keen interest in birds, I'd like to point out that the European Swallow has a wingspeed of 18 FPS ( Flaps Per Second ). Secondly, if the King said that he "found" the coconut's - then indeed he did. Lying is something that Kings never do - then or now, right? Anyway, 5th century European Swallows were a lazy bunch - but it is possible that one or two may have sat upon a coconut while it floated from the tropics to England, no problem. See ocean current map, below:

It would be a simple thing for a coconut to fall to the beach in French Guiana or Cuba for example, and then be carried away by currents to England.

But then I regress.... So then, fellow Sosarian's, what IS the maximum weight a secured container can hold?
Eh?

Then that brings to question. If said coconut is of course migratory as you suggest. Why would it wait to pass by Europe for a temperate climate? There are much closer temperate climates in North America. And there are also the nice amusement parks along the way in Florida. Or they could stop and take in a night of city life on one of the many east coast citys in the United States. For these reasons I believe your argument is malarky

Perhaps said coconut is too far out, and the current much too strong, for it to swim ashore. Assuming, that is, that a coconut can even swim. If not, they would be entirely dependant on the tides for a visit to the east cost.

I never suggested that the coconut was actually trying to make it to Europe. And they spend little time actually swimming, floating being their preferred method of travel whenever possible.... I submit that the coconut in question may have been misinformed regarding the price an English King would pay, and made the trip on the assumption that he/she/it would indeed be rich upon arrival... And the swallows simply took advantage of this numbskull of a coconut as a way to get to England without "raising a feather" so to speak...

So, how many Stones can a secure container hold?

Again Malarky! Any coconut willing to travel that far for money is obviously quite financial minded. I would think they wouldn't allow such swallows to hitch a ride without some kind of compensation. And in your own words the swallows are "a lazy bunch" which would lead one to assume they have no job. Are you then suggesting to me that swallows are born with silver spoons in their beaks?

I have no idea how many stones a secure container can hold. Just have nothing better to do on a friday afternoon

Did you not notice that said coconut was a "numbskull" ? From thefreedictionarydotcom, a numbskull is defined as:

stupid ; dolt; blockhead
It is easy for me to understand how a couple of enterprising swallows could have easily duped this numbskull of a coconut...
Obviously, I must have nothing better to do either....

Somebody out there MUST know how many stones a container can hold, but they are keeping it to themselves.... Shame on you!

No one is truly a numbskull. I happen to give a little credit to the coconut. As Einstein said "We are all a genius but if you tell a coconut he is a fish he will spend his days trying to float to..." Nevermind.

Ok, well I've come to the conclusion that absolutely no one here knows what the stone limit of a secure container actually is...

So, I hereby declare it to be....

I believe I´ve seen screenshots from people reporting suspected scripters in the woods having containers on their steps with millions of stones in them.

So yeah, infinite might be a good guess...

It's what I'm guessin too.... That as long as it's a secure it can have unlimited weight...

I will suggest that like a comparison between a UO day and a RL day, a Sosarian stone may not be equal to RL stone.

Ore I think is about the heaviest stackable item at 12 stone per. So that's 720,000 per stack, or 90,000,000 stone per container?

Close to infinite =]

the max amount of stones in a secured container in a House, would be 375,000,000 stones. (just because of the item cap of 125 items per container)
for a characters Bank which could hold say 175? 525,000,000.

Clock-work assemblies are the heaviest stackable item, at 50 stones per.

Wouldn't stacks of ore out-weigh that?

Nope. As I said in my post, ore is 12 weight. 60,000 stacked clockworks, while much harder to get, would weight more :)

*** Hmm goes the brain ***

HM, you might just be on to something here.... We already have giant fowl making their yearly ( one must assume - migratory ) visit to our fair lands, so it certainly wouldn't be a stretch to envision the more highly evolved cousin of the Hiryu - the Sosarian ( some say European ) Swallow - making a yearly appearance...

One can't help but notice the simularity between our current Hiryu

and the Sosarian Swallow

It would appear that they have a similiar "demeanor" ....

Just sayin..... o_O

Actually, it was North of Minoc. I was having a discussion with some French dude atop his castle wall.....

I was doubtful about the African swallow, but clearly this picture from the Internet shows an African swallow carrying aforementioned coconut near a castle (which could in theory have a French knight in it). And, after finding this picture, I am convinced we are not giving the African Swallow enough credit since I believe everything I find on the Internet.
