What about the ones that play on more that one shard and live out of their bank on the secondary shard?
This isn't 2001, there actually are housing spaces available.
Find a friend that will let you lock it down in their house I guess. Not a perfect solution, but being able to put them in while at a spawn isnt an appropriate compromise.

From the early days of UO once my family who played with me and the first guilds I was member of we have always helped the new player start out in the game. A suit of armor, a good weapon, a pony or ride of their choice we tamed, a few k in gold, and a simple house to get them off to a good start in UO. Oh and we did include them in play till they were well on their way to having a good time. Remember this was 1998 after we our selfs had made the opening of UO and had the game well under our belts. We wanted new blood to get our game off to a great start!
In todays age my son and I have also kept this tradition of helping the new player or returning one who is not quite up there to the speed of UO as we are now. Still the suit of imbued armor, and imbued weapon, a good mount tamed, 100 to 250k in gold sometimes a mill if we had plenty.... and help them find a home spot if needed. Its the last month of 2011 and We still help the players of UO who come to play to keep our game one of the best we can hope for.
Yes gold is easy these days for us... we know the game like the back of our hands. They do not. Help them along but be patient. What seems easy to us is our years of expertist in this world we call home. You would not ask a new born child to walk even before it is strong enough to roll over and crawl. Remember your an embasador for this game and your kindness will get passed along.
It's christmas and with that time of year the sprit of giving should be in all our hearts for the new and young who come to our world to play.
I hope this spills over to the real world for all too this year ... many of our fellow humans are in bad straits and might be looking at a bleak christmas for their little one's and themselves. Beleave you me I say this with all my heart if i had a billion dollars I'd see as many familys who are in this boat would have a home to call their own and food to feed their family as I could stretch the money. If you know someone who is in this boat see what you can do help ... even a smile and a cup of coffee and a ear to talk to is sometimes the best gift they will get.

if someone is in dire need of a housing spot, last I was on the areas directly around minoc/vesper and around covetous were barren on almost every shard (hell, half the shards the housing spots 2 screens from the moongate were open, on atl there was even a spot for a log cabin there), quite a few housing spots open that will at least fit a small plaster home. And give around 3 months after houses start falling again.... unless for some reason I feel like reactivating there's going to be an open castle spot in the forest by wrong.
There is little reason for an account to be house-less currently, however I believe there are a number of people who play multiple shards and have a house only on their main shard. I have chars living in an inn and sharing a tokuno boat for storage on a shard other than the two I consider 'home'.

Today there's so much empty space that even a young player can quickly gain enough to put his own house nearly on every shard (I play on Europa).

Yes, when even all the house spots in Fel were taken and I had to pay 500k for a small house spot there. Small houses in Tram were 1.5 mil. When malas opened I was in luck and could place an 18x18 in a remote area, but within a day every spot was taken and the rest was out of luck.
Then again I really miss the crowd. Back in those days the whole road between Luna and Umbra had vendor malls on both sides. Now I can hardly get anything at all, over half the vendors in Luna are empty.

Walking, running, exploring a world full of citizens, wonderful decorated houses, full of vendors...
...you don't know how sad I become reading the bullettin boards outside the houses to see mesages from past years and no updates.
This is why I'll always be for a server merge.
We'll lose history but we will be able to live again a more crowded world.
Europa and Atlantic should be the most crowded shards these days.
I cant tak much on Atantinc, but Europa has about 15/20 shops seriusly tended and nothing more.
Most of the houses are just extension of the bank box.
And apart afew guys around Luna and in the last addition to the game (quest/dungeon/etc...) there is nothing.
There is room for housing on every shard and gold isn't hard to come by if you're looking to place a house. So I don't really get the point of this thread. Maybe the most newbish player might have trouble with getting a house but something tells me that kind of player might not be able to get a SOT.
The way the in-game economy works, while I won't say money is easy to find, it's surely moreso than real life, and housing isn't something one can "not afford" in the real life sense. "Easy" enough, indeed, that folks complain about it, as though people being able to afford what they need were a bad thing.

UO is a sandbox game, the game doesn't hold your hand and tell you what to do, instead it gives you freedom to go out in the world and do your thing. I guess the later expansions did add quests and more traditional raiding-like encounters but still, at the basis it's a sandbox.
The problem is, that sandbox games revolve around interaction with other people. What's the point in building sandcastles if there's no-one to show them to? What's the point of shaping a world if there are no people that inhabit it? It's only 'real' when other people believe in it too. When there's no-one around to care, playing a sandbox game quickly becomes pointless.
I did take long breaks so instead of the gradual decline I really notice the difference between what it was around the time of Ricardo, and about a year ago, and now. It's frightening to see how many have quit in the mean time, at times I feel like I play on a freeserver as there probably are only 100 or so players on.

I know that doesn't help, just saying.
The point of this thread is that you can only have 1 house per account. You can't have a house on every shard you play on.
Thats me and my other accounts farming the shard for PS
lolReally there are alot of friendly people on the Japanese shards. Some can speak some pretty good english but I can speak Japanese as well
Despise is the hot spot mostly. If it's dead you can solo it.If a player wants more then one house then they will have to cough up more $$$$ for another account. Until the devs change their policy (which I highly doubt because that would cost Bioware $$$$) if accounts could hold more then one house you have to pay for extra housing.
The beginning point was about people who can't afford houses though. In fact that's what most people are discussing here.
For people that play more then one shard. If you are Friended to a house then you can lock this book down, place SOTs in book, unlock book and place in bank box. The book does not have to be locked down to get SOTs out of it, just to put them in.
Getting 35k is not that hard. Even a new player can go to a safe champspawn in Ilsh and loot the corpses. Most players don't loot them they just want to get to the champ. Even on atlantic there are plenty of places to place a small 7x7 and even bigger in tram or malas.
