It's a DNS problem similar to one we had before with the patch server. The solution is therefore also similar. See this post:

It's not the game that's the problem, it's that your internet can't find it. Editing that file merely gives it the address to go to. You change it back later, once the dns has sorted itself out, to avoid it going to the wrong address should it change again.

Thank you. That worked for me, didn't need to change any files either. Just go to "Start"-"Accessories"-"Command Prompt"-type it in and hit enter. You may need to right+click Command Prompt and run as Administrator. Hopefully it will work for others too.

I will try to explain why it doesn't in a simple way:
The devs update the DNS at their server for the address (login.ultima.com, for this example).
Server starts spreading the word: "Hello my dear fellow DNS servers, login.ultima.com is now on this new IP"
That's all they can do about it.
Now the other DNS servers across the world will ask their DNS server for the IP for login.ultima.com when their DNS cache expires.
Here is the tricky part. The DNS cache will expire at different times at different servers, and while it doesn't, those servers will be pointing to the old IP.
It can take seconds, it can take days for some servers.
Depending on where you are, you might be being served by a DNS server whose cache hasn't expired yet and it doesn't have the right IP.
With that, you can't connect.

No, a simple dns flush didn't work for me either - which is why I edited my hosts file. I'm actually more comfortable with that than messing around with the auto dns option that has been talked about. It's complicated and I don't understand what the possible implications might be.

Just wondering if the people who it didn't work for are using routers as I'm assuming this doesn't work if you use a router.
you dont always have to be an enabler. god its like your bought and paid for. the post below yours is correct. its SUPPOSED TO WORK WHEN YOU CLICK ON IT.

on another note, my wife gave me a good sized honey do list today. guess i'll have no distractions and bang that out.
I use a router works fine for me.
My guess is the server moved, along with the ip, and DNS across the internet has not associated the new ip address to the name yet. I've seen this ebfore with other things, and the only thing that can fix it is time. EA has no control over that, however they should have known it would happen. The host file fix is a bandaid to get around the fact that whatever you use for dns, or what your dns uses for dns, doesn't know of the change yet.
Interesting response to people who try help you out. Next time you have a problem, remind me we should just laugh and ignore you, since clearly trying to help out just makes you even crankier than you were beforehand.
