How to steal from NPC shops.

I have recently returned to UO and am trying to figure out how to steal from an npc shop, as I have not been successful despite many repetitive attempts.

I am trying to steal 3 gold wire from a barrel in Serpents Hold smith shop on Felucca.

I have nothing on me, except shadowdancer leggings, which give me a total of 120 stealing.

I stealth up to to barrel and try to steal the item, but die every time. Closest npc is 6 squares away (which I know is close and in the notice range).

1. Does stealing from a hidden position help? As soon as I try to steal, I am revealed, so I am guessing no?
2. Does it matter if I am stealing in Trammel or Felucca?

is the npc facing you or with back to you? I always try to make sure any npcs nearby are looking the other way.

Being hidden doesn't make a difference. Also, though I'm not 100% sure, I don't think you can crate steal in Tram anymore.

I think you're just getting really unlucky. Hehe. Or that NPC is secretly a detective!

You can try waiting until the NPC has it's back turned to you. I remember doing that in the old days but not sure if it makes much difference. Good luck to ya!

Try Tram Buc's Den blacksmith. GM stealing there with no problem being caught.

I've been stealing the new refinements in fel for the past week. What is the deal with NPC's and getting guard whacked?! I understand being seen and called out, but I'm getting killed in a room with no windows, the door is closed, and the closest NPC is outside the building 8 tiles away! Where do i get a pair of these x-ray specs they use?! Does the weight of the item you steal factor in to you being seen and called on?

Anyone have any idea how to steal the wire that is too heavy? Every container I look in has 4 or more wire in a stack and it is too heavy to steal Should I just target the container and hope I can steal a portion of it or does that even work?

If there are no players or NPCs on your screen you should be able to steal large stacks of wire no problem. My thief has 120 real skill and I was able to directly target large piles of wire (>20 wires) and steal 1 to 3 at a time. I recently cleared out stacks of copper wires from the blacksmith shop in Serps by doing this.

In some shops it is possible to have the screen clear of NPCs, in others that would be nearly impossible. Good luck.

There are 2 of us trying to do this and we are having no luck stealing any amount out of the stack You must be really lucky!
