How to get the older quests to work with a gargoyle?

The Solen quest to be friended to the hive works with a gargoyle until you get done with adding the water to the vats then stops working.

The Naturist is just telling my gargoyle that it's preoccupied by something and should come back after it's done. The gargoyle's quest log is empty.

Is there a way to get the old quests to work with a gargoyle?

Suspect failure to be offered naturalist quest caused by uncompleted matriarch quest. (context menu quest log, not paper doll quest log)
