How does owning 2 houses at a time work?

From what I have read, as soon as I place a 2nd house, my first house will then then go into decay mode.

What if I sell my 2nd house prior to my 1st house decaying? Will my first house stop decaying when I no longer own the 2nd house?

no, it will still decay. so be very sure of your choice to place a new house.
