How does jewelry durability work?

Does it lose durability when you use a property on the jewel or does it lose it in combat. I have a tamer who has some animal taming jewelry I imbued so I could go tame high plains boura. I haven't fought very much with this character, but I notice the jewelry has already lost durability. Did I lose it while taming?

If something hits you no matter how small it is you can loose durability.

And they can be repaired with tinkering skill

If something hits you no matter how small it is you can loose durability.

This includes damage over time like poison, fire fields etc.

Though not from puzzle traps.
