But...

Once you get into it, honestly... you get faster and it becomes easy. And even then, all the white & black seeds/plants you don't want are something you can sell. (Depending the shard you play) Prices can be quite worth it.

You can get white or black seed from a normal plant but its pretty rare. I used to use that poppy dust to tell which seeds were which from that naturest quest. Once you know what a seed is you can place it into a container with a book beside it telling what it is. When you drop a random black seed into the container it will stack with the same type of known seed. I think short and tall hedges will stack with each other but at least you know its a hedge.

You have one in three odds of getting a white seed and about a one in 30 chance of it being a certain plant. You have to *really* want the white plants.

Evil Pixie is right about it getting faster and easier. I did 100 four hive quests and 100 five hive quests and grew the plants as my payment for a bunch of imbuing materials. You get so you can just about literally do it in your sleep after the first couple of days at it. After that, it's not bad at all.

The Naturalist quest is at Examine the Solen Hive

There are two versions of the quest, each giving you the chance at 3 rare seed colors, one version includes white seeds. The white seed you get will grow into one of the plant types, of which there are something like thirty possibilities.

Unless your able to do the same routine about 90 times for each hedge you want and stay tightly wrapped, I'd say hire someone to do the quests for you.

Just to clarify, you have to do the Naturalist Quest and search all FIVE hives in order to get a black or white seed -- these are the ONLY seeds that will produce any of the newer plants in black or white (hedges included), since you can't crossbreed a black or white plant, so there's no way to do the whole cactus-bug crossbreed thing.

However, when you do all five of the hives, you will get a black seed, a white seed, or a fire seed... so it's not even a guarantee as to what color you'll get.

I will say that with the black and white seeds, I do seem to have pretty good luck at getting the newer plant types, so much so that I question whether that's all they give is the new plant types. Still, it's going to be a lot of running and a lot of hoping and praying.

Rare colored hedges will produce the same colored topiaries. You need to set the clippers to "set to cut topiaries": Topiary
