How do I capture a Pirate?

Can someone walk me through this?

1. I've accepted the quest, and have the rope in my backpack and chains on my boat.

2. I have a ship with heavy cannon and I know how to operate them.

So...

Once I encounter a Pirate ship, do I have to do a certain amount of damage to the ship to board it? Or just kill the crew? How does the rope work? And the chains?

On my first attempt, I encountered an Orc Ship and I engaged with cannon, and a mage. I am a melee fighter and was planning to board and kill the crew and capture the Pirate that way but couldn't. In the end, the Orcs beat the crap outta my ship since I only had enough ammo for two salvo's from my 7 cannon and they seem to be able to reload very quickly. I need an experienced Bounty Hunter to give me some good advice.

You have to "scuttle" the ship before you can board it. It will take about 10 shots. Once the ship is "scuttled" you can board the ship by dbl clicking on the ropes on deck. The only way to see if the pirate ship is scuttled is graphically (if your ship is scuttled your tiller men will say "We're scuttled"), but once you see a scuttled ship once or twice you'll be able id it pretty easy.
