My sister needs more leather so I will have to go hunting today. It is not regular leather she wants this time, oh no... it must be green or red hides to further her tailoring lessons. I consider my choices and decide that dungeon Destard would be a fine place to locate the giants that have such skin.
Stopping first at the bowyer in Skara Brae to fill my quiver I notice that my butcher's war cleaver, crafted by my friend Lord Fletcher, is not in my backpack. Arrival at the docks finds the ferry to the mainland just pulling in and I hop aboard. While crossing I examine my crossbow and find it to be, while not the very best, in full repair. The trip across the farmer's fields and thru the woodland is uneventful and at last I am at the entrance to the dark dungeon.
We have heard rumblings of much larger dragons than the ones that rest here, but as of yet none have been spotted nesting in these lands. I am very wary when hunting the dragons since two carefully placed blows from them can put me down. Slowly entering the hole in the mountainside I spot one dragon to the west and a pair of frolicking wyverns just right of the entrance. Quickly loading the bolts I begin firing on the pair, gathering the hides as they fall. The mighty dragon has not yet noticed me but a fleeting glimpse of a shadow tells me that someone else might have.
My skill as an archer is not yet as complete as I'd like, but vanity pushes me to test myself against the dragon to the west. I catch his attention and manage to isolate him and it takes some time, but eventually victory is mine. I gather the hides and again the shadow flickers alongside me. This time the shadow has a voice... "Here, this will do better against the dragons than the one you have" Jasononna says and she hands me a finely crafted heavy crossbow, specially fitted to damage the mighty dragons. I turn to thank her only to find an empty spot where she had stood.
That was years ago and I try to keep the bow, and the friendship, in good repair. I have also, since then, learned to appreciate the art of stealthing.
(not a winner, but thought it a nice story to share)
