I have been around for almost four weeks now and I have been exploring... but I dont know much... Yet.

Seems most of the veterans enjoy UO and have the experience to point specific game improvements that no one else can even imagine...

So my question is simple... (and please do not address cheating/3rd party, hacking etc)

How can we, the players, improve UO?

My suggestion:
a multi dungeon Quest...
impossible to complete in a flash...
it will promote knowledge... (maybe team work if you like it, but not required)
and have it divided, good and evil (different perspectives... so everyone can enjoy it)...

I bet many more ideas, much better than my own are around...

They have developers that get paid to have ideas and implement them properly.

Else players could band together and open their own shards?

There is an ideas forum and some even get used by the developers.

Heya. It's good to see new players around here, frankly. I hope you're having a good time in UO thus far. ^^

To be honest, I think they'd do well to spice up the skill gain system slightly. Maybe implement more quests specific to individual paths that assist in the skill gain process, or something along those lines. For example, for a swordsman, quests could entail killing things within that player's skill range, returning and getting an additional bonus for their work.

This would allow characters quicker skill gain, which I feel is important for skills such as inscription or poisoning which really do take massive amounts of time and resources if training without the assistance of scripts. This would help new players and veteran players alike.

I feel the skill gain system in UO is slightly antiquated and draconian in its implementation, which is why you see lots of people use scripts to train up their skills to begin with. Taking the emphasis away from continually grinding and repeating an action to gain skill and putting it more on completing quest tasks might even make gaining skill enjoyable even for people who have been in-game for many years.

It'd be interesting to hear what you, as a new player, think about this and the gain system in UO currently as you've experienced it.

Take care.

- Animal Lore, 2 pets fighting eachother... bandage one, bandage another... work with another tamer,

Also, if you're interested in learning about specific skills and their usefulness visit the professions forums on Stratics and read the FAQ's. I find that starting there is pretty helpful. Of course that doesn't mean I dont spend a lot of my time asking my friends questions too.

Good luck.

About my personal experience.

Europa players helped me alot... specially with the lrc suit.

But I had my path set... unlike many of the newcomers.

I knew I wanted to get to the gauntlet... FAST.

I had alot of help... but the major advantage I have is time.

So hunting was fun, but the DFs are alot more fun!

Plus i got a bunch of posts that showed me how to play an archer...

One thing is not working... cant fit necro into the template... missing the ring and the bracer... but i'll get there.

So young, yet so ambitious. I hope that your ambition has not robbed you of the joys of youth. There is nothing quite like getting lost in Ilshenar, loosing all hope... and then stumbling upon Petrus... tending his bees.

The challenge I was given was simple... cover the most of UO until the 22th.

With some luck i will be able to try pvp... already contacted the Europa pvping guilds... (got pked once...)

So far, so good...

He is part of the Library quest... to contribute to the Library and get reward points you need a talisman.. you get that by completing a quest and Petrus is one of the stops on the quest.

I think the developers do not see scripting as a real game problem.
It is annoying, but not important enough to get really tackled.

another part of uo also completed by scripting...

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, I dont think the quest can be completed by scripting. It's just a good way to get around UO and see what is out there.

If this thread is gonna turn into an anti-scipting, anti-uo thread then I'm gonna have to move on. Seems like every other thread on UHall has had that same theme lately.

It's your thread to do as you like, but the title, "How can the players improve UO?" suggested a pro-active community based approach. That appealed to me.

back to it then... (all negative posts deleted... lets be pro-active)

if we explore the lands... i was in Ilshenar and i loved it...

i saw the city of the angels... gypsy camps... some dungeon entrances...

Is there a point to Ilshenar? is there a Story behind the towns?

Are there NPCs with quests?

Are there NPCs with quests?

[/ QUOTE ]

There are more NPC's with player quests than I could even tell you about. I haven't even done them all. Of course some of them have very specific goals, like the Human to Elf quest, etc., or the quest to get Spellweaving. Some are pretty challenging to complete.

Some of them give junk rewards but I always thought the experience was the reward in itself. I've done a few and found them to be entertaining. Some I've not done yet because doing them solo seems like quite a challenge. There are posts around the boards about some of these quests and folks who try to build a "template" just to complete them successfully.

Here is something you might enjoy...

The lands of Ilshenar are actually all connected by land. Even though many use the moongates to pop in at a certain shrine, you can enter at one gate and make it to any land on foot/mount. There are even some areas connected by secret passages located deep in dungeons. I bet you would find it quite a challenge to complete an expedition around the lands of Ilshenar.

That might be something fun you would want to round up a couple of friends for, keep a journal of your exploration, etc. I bet it wont be as easy as you think.

Heck that sounds like a really fun RP quest. Make a wealthy botanist char who hires a group of adventurers to escort him around as he catalogs plants and fungi. What fun you would have as Sir Darwin rushes into an unexplored cavern eager to find a new species of mushroom!

I think the best way we can help is via constructive ideas here on Stratics. Then it is up to the devs to implement these ideas.

The only other way I can think of is to have individuals be leaders on their respective shards. We have a couple players on Napa who tend to take the lead with events and I think they are very cool.

I was considering organizing an old fashioned PVP tourney at my place in fel where everyone would line up naked against the walls of my house. I would place several chests in the middle of the room with GM armor, GM weps, basically everything needed for "old fashioned" PVP. At the start sound the players would charge the chests, get their gear on and go at it till only one player was left standing. No additional items could be worn except what was offerred in the chests and no specials would be allowed. I think this would be a blast.
