House Organization and Efficiency Guide

Hail Folks,

Humanity is a vast collection of diverse individuals. Some, like me, bounce like pinballs from idea to idea and task to task. Others are methodical, organized, and just naturally break large Projects into well ordered smaller steps.

I think it would be a tremendous resource, here in Homes and Castles, if our talented, well organized folks, could create a Guide for Moving and Storage, to be stickied where none could miss it.

I can speak for those who toss everything loose into a container until it is full and then rinse and repeat that process. My house holds just as much as my neighbors house, however, I either can NEVER find what I need, or I can but only after exhaustive searching.

So I ask you organized, efficient folks two main questions; How best may I organize what is stored in my House; and should I ever need or want to move to a new House, how may I pack and move in an organized, efficient manner???

Perhaps this is One Guide for Moving and Storage, perhaps it is TWO Guides, one for Moving and the other for storage.

I leave that to the wisdom of the Posters and Moderators, but I humbly, urgently, seek your advice.

I just wanted to reply because I do a lot of moving and re-designing. I also have a lot of junk!

As far as moving goes, I know some people who pack their items by room, like... everything from this room goes into this chest. However, I've found that it's easiest for me to pack like things together. All deeds go into one bag, statues in another, crafted furniture in another, etc.

I store things very similarly. All of my crafting supplies go into one or two containers stacked on top of one another. Maybe tools in one bag, materials in another. All cloth goes into one bag, ingots in their own bag, SA ingredients in one bag, and ML ingredients in another. I separate armor into containers labled "LRC, MR, High Resist, Unimbued, Unenhanced, etc." Same goes for weapons. The main idea is to keep similar things together, and thinking about what you need for specific tasks will help you group things efficiently. For instance, I have a container full of supplies for peerless hunts - machettes, snake charmer flutes, acid proof rope, gorgon lenses, slayer weapons, and even armor repair deeds.

Also, I always have one central room or floor where I store everything I need. You can neatly stack chests against a wall and design the room to be your treasury or something.

I hope that helps a little. :)

Here is my 2 cents....

Moving:

I use the new house tele tiles and go room by room. The use of the tele tiles really makes moving easier to organize and move (unlike the blue beetle and invite your friends olden days...). Much easier for me that way and very quick.

Organization/Storage:

I have 4 accounts and set up my houses for different purposes:

"Home Base" - Trammel castle with linked tele pads to each of the other 3 houses with a personal use library, soul stone storage per account, dyes for color coordination between characters on accounts, adventuring equipment storage (pedals, quest equipment, pof, gold skulls, etc), and loot storage.

"Crafting House" - Trammel castle with smithy area, tailor area, carpenter/fletching shop, imbuing area/storage (ingredients, items to unravel, etc), t hunt area (including new libraries for Tram, Malas, Tokuno, and Ter Mur - no desire to do Fel...), fishing area, lumberjacking library, mining library, and of course bod storage and fill areas.

"Storage & Greenhouse" - Trammel keep with misc storage and plant growing area. I also have my alchemist shop set up here as it made sense to have close to the plants due to the need for potion kegs for gardening. I also have the scribe shop area here to share in the storage of reagents with the alchemist shop. I also use this house to store all my fountains of youth for enhanced bandy making.

The last house is for misc storage as it is the human house in the Abyss that I have set up as an old fort "Bloodstone" with tele pad access for public use.

I found that using wood benches with baskets or wood boxes makes a cleaner and nicer look for storage "walls" instead of using just wood crates or chests alone. Cleaner look for me and also allows the ability to deco around it easier.

I also label containers whenever possible and store things by type (example: deeded furniture container with sub-containers labeled smithy, tailor, etc)).

Lastly, when I work on layouts, deco, and storage/organization, I keep in mind traffic flow. For example: I have a tele pad on the front steps to my crafting house that gives quick access to the middle 2nd level of my house where the Thunting area is at, saving time from having to run thru 2 pairs of doors and up stairs. I then think thru what I want to load and unload once at that area in the Thunting area - storage containers for gems, reagents, gold, blue scrolls/recipes, creeping vines, and special items in one stackable area so you can unload without having to move. I keep this flow in mind for everything for how I store it and where I store it. The less usable items such 2009 pumkins and last years holloween candy would be stored in a much further out of the way place.

I can offer a tour of my houses and storage ideas and share with others if anyone is interested.

Just my 2 cents (maybe after all the typing it makes 12 cents lol).

Happy organizing and making the best of the dreaded moving!

:)

As for moving I can move rather quickly.

Typically I use the new commodity deed box... alot. I deed up all the heavy stuff... then I put a container in each room... I load up everything that is loose into the container(s) and keep them separate... then I move just containers. I also move using a beetle and two packies (all bonded of course) so I can recall back and forth with loads.

Secondly as for organizing I am rather nuts about that. I use chests and bags.

I have a house for weapons and talismans along with all my musical instruments.
I have a house for plants that I also keep my powerscrolls in... as well as all my maps and MIB's.
I have a house where I keep armor and jewlery.
I have a house just for gift stuff. Like Valentines, xmas and anniversary.
I have a house for deco things.
And I have a house for crafting.

I put all the crafting stuff near the things that are needed for that craft the smithing stuff with the forge and all, the imbuing stuff by the soulforge, the tailoring stuff as well as clothes that I keep with the tailoring supplies all carpentry stuff I put in between the blacksmith and tailor stuff.

I have a house where I typically "log".... this house is full of all the day to day items I need. Reagents, scrolls, runebooks, and the like this house also has a chest for each of my accounts and inside each chest is a bag labled per each character.. this way each character has a place for "personal" things... so they don't get lost... I hate when I lose things. I have a box there with an empty bag that I put everything on my character in that needs repaired.... a repair bag. I have a bunch of dye tubs there too incase I want to change colors. I also keep SoT's there for skill gains.... never know when you might need one. I also have 3 or 4 chests there which I refer to as my "drop chests" this is where i dump stuff before I sort it into the other houses.

Now not everyone has that many homes but in one house you can make a place for each thing. Make a spot just for your deco, for your crafting, for your "dump"... when the dump gets full time to sort and organize. I try to sort about once a week. (usually ends up being once a month or twice)... But if you use different styles of chests for different things like keep all "gift" stuff in a couple of gift boxes... this way you KNOW what's in it. Metal chests can be for armor and things.... wooden ones can be for other things like craft supplies. I put most my crafting stuff in gold boxes.

I use different colored metal chests for different things.

Like I separated all my weapons into classes. The bronze chests are for slayer weapons, black for spell channeling, blue for UBWS and green for heavy hitting weapons.

I put the arti weapons in silver. I put my collection of 100%'s in alt green chests...

I think you might get the idea. I try to be consistent. Kinda like when I build.... I often build homes where the Teleporter to the SEcond floor always is one that looks sort of like a Y... the first floor to the Third floor is often one that looks somewhat like an M..... and the first floor to the roof is often one that looks like an X.... second to third floor is a 3 ish looking one..... this way I always know what teleporter takes me where in whatever house I'm in.

Course I also like to "hide" my teleporters. So that makes it more difficult but I think you get the idea.

I put all my plants in the red boxes that are crafted by carpenters. I sorted them by color.

To conserve space you may want to sort by type.... or use bags inside a box if you don't have a whole lot of plants.

It just depends on what your sorting as to how to do it best.

I try to keep all my food in one spot, all my scrolls in another and all my spellbooks in another..... as well I keep all my runebooks near the spellbooks, which aren't far from the regs and potions.

I try to keep tokens all together too. This makes them easier to find.

I know this isn't really helpful at this exact moment, But there will be a news article on organization and various screenshots w/ different storage ideas.

It will likely be one of the first things I do as soon as Halloween is over.

While I have a few people on this thread looking for a specific thing, please just post or pm any requests. This is actually insanely helpful for me because then I can post the things people want to see most.

Other future posts will include Rivers/Ponds, Swamps, Beds, Couches, Bars/Taverns, Bathrooms, Kitchens, Winter/Holiday Deco, S.E. Themed Houses, Ruins, Pet Ideas..

I sort my items by houses like stated above.

My houses are all set up by individual crafting skills. Some of them overlap due to their supplies. I also have a treasure hunter / fisher house where I dump loot and then organize later.

The 2 houses that I need help with the most are my Tailor BOD tower and my Smith BOD tower.
