(Player Event) Honestly – Why is Siege Perilous the Best? (Event)

Moonglow Honesty Recruiting Drive *Event*
I will admit this is a bit ambitious but I think the payoff will be worth the effort. I have been thinking about what is needed most on siege. That would be players. This led me to the ideal of a Recruiting Drive for Siege.
It’s Simple but somewhat time consuming, take 30 minutes out of your game time a few times a week to make a new character on another shard. Then go into General Chat or the Bank and let those on the server know why Siege is best. Talk them into giving siege a try.
A few points to mention would be;
*Role Play community – Siege has a fairly good sized RP community that is welcoming to players.
*Stable Economy – Transfer Tokens have never allowed transfers of “duped” gold. This means pricing is reasonable for a game that is 16 years old.
* One Player per account – One character per account helps facilitate interaction with other players. No one can do this alone… If they have multiple accounts then they are paying for it – also good.
*Guilds and Factions – Taking from the last point. Guilds and Factions are Real TEAMS!
*Player Events – We all like to give back to what has brought us much joy or even a distraction from the real world. It is never about the prize but a chance to come together peacefully.
*Rude and Greedy can’t play- The Rudeness that plagues other shards doesn’t exist here because they will be killed repeatedly. Basically the old guard is on watch and will make you pay. There is no tram to hide in. Be nice or be gone.
*Pker, Anti Pker’s, and thieves have a home- Pk’s can kill because there is no tram to hide in. This means there are Reds to hunt and people to steal from (please use common sense – some items stolen will cause some people to quit UO)
*Housing – those with one account can have a house on siege and another shard.
*NEW2 – There is a guild ready to help those who need it during the transition.
These are just a few of the things I have thought of. There are players (friends) out there on other shards that need a home. Maybe now is a good time to let them know were one is.
So, what do you think is great about Siege? Let us know…
Thanks

Greetings Governor York,

As a “Neophyte Tinker” of Jhelom, I couldn’t resist.

So a while back, I created a Siege character and guild on each shard just for fun. Since I was going to create characters anyway to collect the periodic gifts from the UO gods, I figured one of them needed to be name “Siege” and needed his own guild.

To play off York’s idea and depending on your playing activity, you may have one or more slots open on the non-Siege shards. So, what if “one” of those alternates on non-Siege server was part of a “Siege” only guild with a character name of “Siege” to spread the word?

If it stops there, so be it. We have the building blocks for the Siege Recruiting Drive Event.

Ok... fast forward a bit with some Siege twists. Let’s put the elected officials (i.e., Governors) to work a bit on the chat board.

Let’s say the Governors pick or vote on a shard for the month or week that will be targeted for invasions (newbie invasion at first) by this new Siege guild. Rather than spam at the bank, go on a newbie adventures and have a little fun while in general chat with a bunch of “Siege” names.

Most of the people on Siege are experienced and can develop a survivable character fairly fast using New Haven quests. Depending on the shard, you can sell some gifts for starting gold, or buy/sell items (i.e., arrows, bolts, bottles, etc.) between cities and Luna. If it is well advertised on the board, the newbie adventures may take on a life of their own.

Sure the concept still has some bugs to work out, but what do you have to lose? Worst case you end up with a semi newbie on shard you don’t normally play and may help convince some people to try Siege. Who knows… it may be fun.

I have already reserved a Siege Perilous Guild Experience (SPGE) guild on every production server except Siege and Mugen. Yep, that is total of 25 of them – was bored and used some of my gift item sales – worst case the characters I created will sit there and collect the next series of gifts. J

If you are up for it, send me a PM and I will add the Guild Leaders/Governors as emissaries get the ball rolling on your favorite non-played shard(s).

Thoughts?

Guild Details

Guild Name: Siege Perilous Guild Experience (SPGE)

Goal: Invade a shard for a little advertising, fun and change of pace:

Char Names must be: Siege

Char Type: Any

Gender: Any

Char Skills: Any

Char Type: Blue (or Red later)

Guild Tag: Always on

Guild Type: Non-Faction for now (need to get up and running 1st – mainly for fun at this point)

Guild Membership: Current Siege guild leaders and/or governors can screen membership based on player being known in Siege – call it a trust me system for now.

Guild Emissaries: Current Siege Guild leaders/co-leaders – yes even ones that don’t get along that well together. They would help to ensure consistency in character naming.

Events: Governors would pick a shard and advertise it on the boards (allows time for any basic char creation and quick training) and pick a primary place to control/invade (start off slow… before moving to non-stop harrowers J) based on the shard chosen.

Final note - This is not intended to be a high maintenance guild/activity. It’s boys and girls night out under a Siege banner to have some fun.

OK I rather like this idea, ONE BIG BIG PROBLEM!!! SIEGE SUCKS FOR NEW PLAYERS RIGHT NOW!!!

I jut spent 30 min running all over the place, and I run fast, looking for LRC suits for these two noobs I found. I couldn't find a single human LRC suit for sale. WTF!!! Seriously if you guys want more players we need to work on our vendors... We need to make siege accessible to people who don't already have tons of soulstones with craft skills on them. I have plenty of room at my mall I would love to have someone open a lrc suit vendor.

Excellent Point Atlantic Vlad, Maybe we should prep the server a bit and set a start date for this....
Maybe, there is a Guild of Crafters out there that could lend a hand on this one.
Also Shame armor is easy for veteran players to get. This could be sold fairly cheap.
I suggest Start Date For Monday the 25th.(One Week From Now) the week of thanksgiving might be a busy week.

BTW - there is an LRC vendor in Zento. I just bought some armor today from them. From my understand Grimlex has also set up a Vendor Runebook too, might wanna give that a try. (i forget where it is located)

Rue, I like the ideal of holding a Hunt for Siege players. But may I suggest a slight change?
To hold this on Siege, We have plenty of hunting ground.
However I like the ideal targeting a shard or a few selected shards a day. ( maybe some recon to find the busiest server would be needed )

Well I did manage to find a vendor later that had piecemeal lrc later, but there's one big problem here people from production shards are afraid to go shopping and lose all their gear. Also they don't know where to go shopping. We need to consolidate somewhere they will look, both of the new players I was helping last night ran past my vendor house in New Mag One of them was in NEW2 but it didn't seem to me like NEW2 had done much for them considering they told me they had bought their own full spell book.

Who is in Charge of NEW2 I would like an emissary character so I can add folks I'll gladly outfit people with my money I LOVE helping folks out. Although I also herd the one that was in NEW2 say she had been pked recently and lost all her stuff... which is why she wouldn't travel without unloading in the bank first... I don't know if this happened to her before or after she was in NEW but if it was after we need to talk to our player base.

They do get a filled spell book if they are a mage. NEW2 is not just about handout but also about other kind of help and advices. Maybe they brought the spell book before they joined NEW2

I'm running NEW2. I do need more emissaries but the job take more than adding new people and helping them with stuff. A NEW2 emissary need to get along with both the blue and the red community.
Did you ask her how she did react, when she got killed.
Why was she looted?
Did she go back to the body after rezzing?
Did she try to loot her stuff before the PK was done?
Did she complain / pancake about getting killed?
Or maybe she did not go back at all and her stuff declayed
We may have a few PK who like grief a new player but they are few and you won't get far with trying to speak with them.

A lot in gen chat will help a new player who get killed. Maybe with getting the stuff back or helping replacing it.

What are your char name, do I know you. If I do know you and I believe you can handle the job, we can speak about it.

There are cheap LRC suits across from the Pawn Shop in West luna, they can shop from guard zone.

 I like the basic idea. Let's ask our friends on production shards to give Siege a try.
We could give our char on the production shard the title, "Siege Ambassador," and seek out bored vets who might like the challenge of playing on the old frontier of UO.

& maybe, post here if you recruit someone so we can welcome them?

Bob I think bored vets are the perfect people to come over. Those who don't want a hand out but a hand up. If I was handed everything i needed then why play? It takes a witty player to survive on Siege and like any game it can have its ups and downs.
I have also noted that it appears there is a stigma of siege is only for pvper's and thiefs. This may be partly the case but I can make more in a day as a "gold farmer" than I could as one of the most thought about temps. Not to mention most of the active players are not thieves or pvpers...
In any case i'm glad to see so many replies.

I am glad to see New players coming on. Should we start a separate thread to make note of these new players?

I just can't let this go unchallanged.

I don't know how long you've been here, AtlanticVlad - but I've been here since mid-summer, and my experience to this point is directly opposite yours regarding NEW2 and the people associated with it.

There's two reasons why I (as a 14yr vet) came to Siege. Reason one - when they declared that you could own a home on SP and still keep that account's property on your primary shard. Reason two - FrejaSP, period. It was a couple of Freja's posts here on Stratics, but in UHall, that started a conversation between she and I.

Freja is the ultimate Ambassador for Siege. She understands the game and she understands Siege. Add to that the enjoyment she gets out of helping people, and that enjoyment is ALL that she gets when she spends hour after hour, ingame with Tina Tink making LRC suits, full spellbooks, marked runebooks, giving you access to her network of homes and safe places, introductions to people she knows will also help you and warnings about the other side of Siege...

There was never a question that I had that Tina or one of the many friends I've met thru her and her volunteers didn't have an answer to... They showed me how to shop from the guard zones in Luna and Zento with the marked locations in the runebook I was given... I was offered shelter while I looked for a place to have my own... Tina introduced me to members of what would eventually become my guild GIL, and told me about others to speak with... It's because of the selfless efforts of FrejaSP and people like her that make all NEW2 members here feel like there's a friend ready to lend a hand whenever you might need one... And a great place to come just for the wise and friendly advice...

Thought you might want a bit more detail on the NEW2 experience from someone who has experienced it firsthand.

I suspect you just had a bad day... I know of at least 3 vendors - Zento, and Magincia - that have an almost constant supply of very low cost (17-18k) LRC +6MR suits - so you should have - perhaps - spent a bit more than 30 mins running "all over the place" and you'd no doubt have stumbled across at least one of them.

I hope you feel better tomorrow....

The point was not that they don't exist I found a few, eventually, the problem is that they aren't were people can find them as easily as I feel they should be to find. I went through the Old NEW myself. And I think that was a good experience but when Shal was around she frequently asked in Gen chat if there were any new folks that could use a crash course on siege, "Not her words" I have been back a few weeks now and haven't seen a single conversation in gen chat about NEW that I didn't start. I'm not saying it's not happening, but at the very least we need better time zone coverage... And I did find about 12 vendors with garg suits and no more human suits in that half hour again saying we just need those vendors that are being picked over first to have "MORE" stock I'm working to remedy this myself. Though any help in that area would be appreciated. as to FrejaSP I'm Vladimir.... and we really must be playing from different time zones or something. And I own the New Mag Community Vendor House that is linked to from Klemos Hub...

Vlad, I have seen areas of improvement that are needed too, however a larger player base will fix all of the issues you have mentioned. I think the forums hold a lot of promise for finding much needed items and it may be a good idea to remember to point any new player or someone looking for something in-game to the forums. I do see some validity to the claim that communication can be an issue. Gen Chat and Forums together should fill any gaps.
So what do you like about siege, Vlad? I am not trying to be a smart ass.... I would like to know what you like about siege?

* Maybe our moderators would be kind enough to Sticky a NEW2 -Message Center, this way messages can be left.* ** Hint, hint** i know there is a new player one but one just for NEW2 to receive offline messages. A pattern may form to show gaps unknown.

Bob, It would be too difficult for me to keep up with the new comers (I have a busy schedule atm). However, someone in NEW2 that can see the new players join the guild would be the most ideal person.

I will make another Post for this on Sat or Sun something that cleans up the rough areas.. *providing there is time next week and my in-laws will tell us if they are coming or not i will have a few mini events for the week. ...

Me, I'm here because its a simple life and I like the people, most of all I like the forced respect on siege, its missing form the production shards and is what I think made UO what it was in its hay day. The fact that if you pissed people off back in the day they could just follow you out of town kill you and take all of your things to make a point. I personally don't engage in such behavior but I like that it's possible. I also like to fix things... And I see a great deal of things that can be improved on siege, not that people aren't trying we just lack the consented effort / organization. At least that's part of it and the part I think I can help address. I'm also a social butterfly in UO and the whole being able to kill/steal from people usually means that that people that I see on siege are actually at their keyboard to talk to me. Unlike Atlantic where I can try and talk to 40-50 people before I find a "Live" one.

While I don't disagree that a larger player base will help I do personally think we currently lack some of the infrastructural needed to accommodate a larger player base right now, especially a budding one. That's the main area I'm working to try and improve.

As for the forum, I think it is great and all, but I think there are two problems inherent with it.
1. Siege appeals a great deal to old vets returning to UO and I for one don't think many of them would have left if they had stayed better informed about the game and its direction and community in the first place mainly used the forums.
2. The other appeal of Siege is the do it your self mentality, I for one don't like having to hop on here to look for shopping instructions, and other things, I realize that some of us are perfectly happy working in this sort of medium, many people however are not, so it can be a rather serious barrier for some people. I personally believe Gen chat is a better place to try and reach struggling new players, especially since its automatically turned on at character creation.

As I've stated previously I'd love to help with advocating for NEW and bringing new players into the fold, but until I have the ability to assign them the protection of that metaphorical paper hat, I will not do so. Again I think there are some serious time zone gaps in our current NEW coverage, and I don't know if that's due to current emissaries actual availability or if they are just waiting for requests rather than asking. Again I'm talking about Gen chat more than anything.

Vlad, first to find out if you would fit in my leader team, I will need to speak more with you. My ICQ is 7869331. There is something negative in your attitude I don't like.
Second, yes there are some serious time zone gaps in our current NEW coverage, we are only few emissaries and we can't be on 7/24

The active NEW2 leaders right now is:

Tina Tink, Guildmaster
July, Leader of NEW
Pendragon, Leader of NEW
Talia, Leader of NEW
Pancho, Big Brother

With only 5 who can add new players, we would need to play at least 5 hours each a day to be able to cover 24 hours a day, if we did not play at same time.
I can't afford to play 5 hours a day at week days, I may play more some weekends. My leaders do have a real life too and RL>UO, never forget that!

If anyone want to help out as leader or big brother/sister, contact me and lets speak about it.

A Big Brother/Sister is a member who can add new members, access them to house and help with advices, basis items and hunts but let the leaders handle conflicts and policy.

A new leader may start as Big Brother/Sister unless they already are a well know as Siege player and in good standing with the community

That is the key.... A NEW2 leader must be able to command at least the respect of the other leaders and the player base in order to be effective in that role.

About getting players from other shards, I think we all can do alot, it do not need to be the same way we do it. I use my signatur, when I post on U.Hall, that works well for me
