Home-made UO Swag (Warning: Picture Intensive)

I work as a BI Analyst for my day-job, but I do some laser-cutting/engraving as a hobby. It is my creative outlet after a long day of programming and logic. My wife (who is an absolute saint), has one flaw; she is not interested in gaming, and I have never been able to get her to play UO with me.

So I did what any good husband/UO enthusiast would do; I made her a bunch of UO swag. Now, even if she is not interested in playing the game, she can at least be free advertising for it! Below are some pictures of a few of the UO-inspired pieces (mostly earrings with a few key-chains at the end) I made. She gets new jewelry and UO gets some much needed exposure: win win! We have already had a few people comment on these and they were surprised to hear UO was still around. It was fun talking to them about their memories of the game and I always encourage people to come back and revisit Sosaria.

A recall rune key chain would be hilarious...I think a few times now I have lost my keys IRL and been thinking "where did I leave my recall runes?" Later when stuck in traffic, I start wondering why the server is lagging so badly... Very nice crafting btw!

"Rumor" has it we will be getting new "UO swag" offers/contests (something of that sort) in the future and you should be sure your subscribed to the email newsletter. No idea if this means posters, post cards, key chains, T Shirts or what. Stay tuned!

I don't think you could legally sell this, but if you were to sell me a can of coke for $20 and have it come with a free keychain I wouldn't say no.

Designing the vectors from scratch took some time, but now that I have them made it would not be too bad. I could probably produce anything pictured above (with shipping in the US included) for $20. However, there is the issue of permission from the powers that be. I would certainly be interested in making these available for purchase if I could get a blessing from someone in the appropriate position. Not sure if they would let me sell directly from my existing website or if they would need to run it through the official store. Red-tape can be complicated. Maybe I will drop a message to Messana to see if she can point me in the right direction. I am sure getting official approval would be a long-shot, but its worth asking I suppose.

I believe that some of those items you certainly would need permission to sell but somehow I doubt EA or Broadsword has sole rights to the Ahnk. There are hundreds of Ahnk related jewelry pieces available on Etsy alone. Just don't 'call' it a recall rune key chain. The Ahnk predates UO buy many thousnads of years.

And oh yeah. Don't do it on Stratics.

It is always flattering when people start talking about "throwing wallets at the monitor", but I don't want to break any forum rules and I certainly don't want to get the thread locked, so there will be no buying/selling of goods conducted here.

I feel like the discussion has already gotten dangerously close to the line, and I would rather not see it get locked. I very specifically avoided posting my website because I was under the impression that even directing people to an external site was also against rules, but for the life of me I cannot seem to find the actual policies anywhere. Let me know if I am wrong and I will be happy to post my website (no actual UO trademarked items are for sale there either). But until then, this thread will remain nothing more than "show and tell".

I am very excited to see some of the new "swag" Capt. Lucky mentioned as well. More UO merchandise is always welcome. Hopefully they will be coming out with some fun new real-life trinkets.

Not to be that person, but that isn't what #6 of the Stratics RoC says, rather it limits it to certain things.

1. Player-to-player transactions involving the following items are prohibited from being promoted or advertised on our network:
2. Game codes.
   
   
3. Player accounts.
   
   
4. Selling in-game virtual items for real life currency (commonly called "RMT").
   
   
5. Power leveling services.

Physical, real-world goods aren't presently covered by the RoC at all.

You are correct: the RoC doesn't specifically cover them. They are however covered in the ToS:

"By way of example, and not as a limitation, you agree that when using a Communication Service, you will not: [various other things...] advertise or offer to sell or buy any goods or services for any business purpose, unless such Communication Service specifically allows such messages..."

It's in legalese and not readily accessible, I know. It's one of several issues we are hoping to clarify soon.

As I don't wish to derail this thread nor distract from Endrik's excellent work, I ask that if anyone has further questions or comments about the rules that they be posted in the Stratics Help forum. Thanks.

I think after being in the public domain for a couple thousand years, the ankh probably isn't copyrighted. You could probably sell the ankh jewelry to New Age shops and no one would suspect it was UO related at all. Etsy is a good website for selling stuff like this if you were so inclined! There are some real life UO crafters on Etsy already..someone is selling a "my greater dragon is smarter than your honor student T-shirt".
