Hey guys. Yesterday I posted in the players corner and I was directed here.

Well, I'd like to start playing UO. The thing is, I've never played it except for once (for 30 minutes). I played TONS of games and MMOs, but just looking at UO makes me nostalgic because I see that people really enjoyed it in the past and there doesn't seem to be a strict line on what to do. And I'm kinda old schoolish when it comes to games.

I'm wondering, is it dumb to start playing 15 years after the game came out? I'd play on Europa shard (since I'm from Europe!), and I was wondering if there was a guild or a group of players that could show me the ropes, and generally hang out in the game. I'd like to be able to play just one character. And I probably wouldn't play more than 1 or 2 hours per day.

There's probably more stuff I'd like to ask but nothing comes to mind. Cheers!

Also, which client should I use?

Not dumb at all :) there are still new players starting and old players returning from so long ago they basically have to relearn the game. Even I, as someone who has played pretty much constantly for about 10 years, still have plenty to learn and things I never tried.

There are certainly guilds who will take in new players and show them the ropes, some are dedicated to that purpose - SAOR and HLP used to be the big names, I think at least SAOR is still going in some form? And you'll find plenty of individuals who will take time to show you around and give you some items to get started. Just don't stand around banks shouting "GIVE ME FREE STUFF PLZ", chatting to people and exploring a bit will get you a more favourable response ;)

Hey, thanks man. I certainly won't do that (I don't think I ever begged and ever will beg for items or money), and I actually got some people from uoforums.com who will also help me. It'd be cool to see you in game if you play on Europa!

Damn, I wrote a long reply and accidentally refreshed page :( Most people use the 2D client because thats what they have used for years, and not everyone is willing to make the jump to EC. However, as a new player I encourage you to check out the Enhanced Client, as it has some features built in that the Classic Client doesn't, and also some that Classic users have to buy a third party program to get access to. There are plenty of people who are happy to help new players on Europa, if you join the Help chat channel there is usually a few in there who will answer any questions :) As for guilds there are plenty who would help you out/take you on, I am in CUK and we are always happy for new members :) Others to look out for are Saor, *NF*, *CD*, TEHC, WoY, RAA and a bunch I forgot :D

Welcome to UO bud.

No its not stupid at all to start now...UO is always evolving bud thats the beauty of this game and I believe aside from its dedicated players and ofc the wonderful events the event managers (EM's) do its a major reason it's been around for goin on 15yrs. Which in itself is nothing short of remarkable. :)
I started almost 6yrs after it came out myself, I missed the time when UO was all pvp/fel ruleset but i've also gotten to experience so much more these past 8yrs and so many changes in the game as well as enjoyed the company of so many friends over the years...gone, still here, and even very sadly, dearly departed.
Ultima Online my friend is a game that kind of grows on you over time I suppose and its not a bad thing. Perhaps the hardest thing for brand new players to comprehend (myself at the time included) is when they're expecting some sort of game programmed objective and people tell em there isnt one, and theyre correct..its open ended you can do virtually anything you want (battle monsters, battle people, craft, roleplay, etc) and unlike many games out there you can change chars around with a little time and effort :). Also unlike many games out there there's no finish line, no endgame. So the possibilities are literally limitless. :)

I hope this helps a little do enjoy Ultima online and most of all have fun :)

Cheers,

Hey, thanks guys! Risso if I see you or some of the guild members from those guilds, I'll drop you a line! A guild is definitely something I want.

I'm having problems with EC, so I'm downloading the classic client now. When I enter login info into EC nothing happens, seems that a number of people had this problem and I did most of the checks, run as admin, file check, compatibility, but nothing helped. So for some time I'll stick with the classic.

Hey and welcome!

It's never too late to start UO. Just don't get frustrated at the beginning. This is an enormous game, and I very much doubt that anybody ever came close to have done everything that's possible in it.

As was said before, a lot of people (especially on the Europa shard) are extremely helpful and happy to explain things and show you around. There are always people around the bank in Luna, so this should be one of your first stops. And have a good look around here on Stratics. Everything is explained and there is a huge amount of tips and tricks.

And if you see somebody of the SRC (Sosaria Red Cross): say hey and we will help with everything you want to know!

Hey, thanks man! I found a superb group of people who showed me some stuff and gave me some gear so I don't need reagents for spells. But I think I'll return it to them and make a warrior instead (my long tradition). I'll see. :D

Welcome to Europa!

It is always great to see new players, and returning veterans alike!

There is an event scheduled here it may be a bit tough but you will meet loads of players.

[Shameless plug]

Recent events have had 50+ players attending

Hi There!

Any hopefully welcome, wilkommen, Bonsjour and all that whatnot.. :/

Starting the game now is a belting idea! Atleast you cant moan about the good old days! like us miserable old coots! Id love to be able to start UO afresh now as i think its a different game now to when i started 13 years ago.

Making a Warrior is probably the easiest route into the game right now. That or a Bard, Warriors can be trained up relatively quickly too and you dont (dont this the wrong way) need much skill to start gathering nice sums of gold :)

I will say something tho.. Its nice to have help.. but theres a sense of achievement when you actually train a character up and save enough gold for your first big purchase. Be it a house, new suit of armour, new weapon, :)

that being said, if you need some help, or advice just shout for Omega in chat :)

Good adventures and safe travels to you if you have popped back!

Lord Omega.

Hello and thanks! May I say, the game is a blast! So better than regular MMOs and whatnot. I just had tons of fun in this inn with 4 nice lads, and it was superb. I'll try to get as less help as I can, but I already got some equipment and I hope I won't feel bad because of it. :)

If I see you around I'll drop you a line! Hang in the help channel. Cheers!

There are no new players, this guy is the first one to come along in years, thanks to the increasing complexity of the game, each patch makes the game more and more complex and alienates newer players more and more.

Guess it depends on what shard you play and where you go in game. I see new players a decent amount on Atlantic. *shrugs*

Shhhh, Small, don't tell them there is more than just Luna bank! I like having the Felluca side of Moonglow all for myself! :eyes:

Are there ans reds left? I don't think I have seen one in years. Not that I mind that ...

I like Fel! I was born there, stomped into the ground more times than Alaster went after somebody's undies and built my small tower there more than 11 years ago on beautyful Moonglow, when it still was prime real estate. So, no trolling of my home!! :lick:

Given the player numbers in Fel compared to Tram, I think you're probably in a minority there :)
Cailleach, people sitting at luna bank doesn't actually count as playing in trammel. I'd say there are more active players in fel than trammel most of the time.

I don't count Luna bank. Ask the idoccers. They're out and running about all over the place. And I know that the numbers of our blue alliance are frequently higher than those in Fel. Just gotta listen in our vent or watch our alliance chat to see that. And that's just our alliance.

I'd rather not listen to you

Truth is that you see New players around,i started last week and got to see alot of ppl(new haven, noobie dungeons, and questions on chat),but i m sorry to say i was expecting a lil more active community.

Even these very 2 forums most of UO vets (i guess) use ,are a mirror of the state in game. You can understand it by the guilds that exist or recruiting.

I said i ll give it a chance and run a character for a month and then decide if i m going back where i came from or not (seriously tho if i have seen that many new characters on Darkfall i would have reactivated the New clan for em)
