Help, I have no UO friends

Hi,

Maybe I should be posting this over at the Pacific forum but that place kinda scares me...

Anyway.

I'm thinking about playing again after a long break but it seems that most of the people I used to play with have either moved on to other things or just can't be found on ICQ any more. I tried to persuade some of my real life friends to play UO with me but they all think video games are only for kids or, well, you know. In other words I don't have anyone to play with, which I think is quite pointless for an online game.

So I'm just wondering if there are any friendly Pacific players out there willing to swap contact info with a newbie like me and do stuff together from time to time?

And oh, 3 more things:
1) I'm not looking to join a guild. My gaming hours are quite irregular and I don't really want to make any commitment.
2) I don't PvP unfortunately. No reflex and no time to practice. Will do champ spawns, but expect me to freeze up and go down the moment we get raided.
3) Don't have SA yet. Will upgrade only if I can actually find someone to play with.

If you're still interested, please post here or PM me.
Thanks guys.

Not that he needs this or even asked for it, but I thought I'd make a post as a reference for Whinemaker. I did a bit of PvM stuff with him on Pacific before I quit playing (mostly last year) and had a great time. We hooked up together when he was looking for some company last year to help with farming hiryus for a nice hued one.

Whinemaker's not quite the "newbie" you might think...for one thing, he knows how to solo peerless and I think he's pretty knowledgeable about SA for someone who still hasn't experienced the content first-hand. He was a very good PvM partner...considerate, polite, capable, etc.

Take a chance and send him a PM to set up a time to get together in game and go hunting! I don't think you'll be disappointed.

:)

hell of a compliment coming from you! I'm on 12 hour shifts for a couple weeks (refueling outage) and if I had Pac characters of any worth I'd give it a shot.

Good luck to ya, Whinemaker ... and FWIW I'm in the same PvP boat you are. reflexes stink. I have Legendary in Dirtnapping in that area.

Thank you Beer! :)
And you know, I don't care if all we do is run around Shame fighting earth eles, I just want to make some new friends and do some in-game "networking".
If you feel like hopping over to Pac and say hi, let me know for sure!
I can't hand out powerscrolls or arties left and right, and imbuing is not an option for me yet but I will try my best to give you a head start.

Any one else want to play with me?
Please?rolleyes:

Welcome back to UO Whinemaker :)

Playing UO without friends is really really hard, not to mention boring. I know you said your time is limited but I would still suggest hooking up with a guild. Most guilds are made up of people who play when they can so everyone understands RL comes first.

Personally speaking, I have several members who can only get on a couple nights a week. During that time they have fun, companionship and people to spawn, peerless or just hang out with.

As the GM of a guild I would hate to see any person not get the full UO experience because they were worried about when they could, or couldn't play.

Do yourself a favor and consider a guild. I don't know a lot about Pacific because I play on Atlantic but I would suggest going to UO.com, go to the guild link under My UO and research the top ten guilds for your shard. Lots of guilds have websites that you can browse and all guilds have emissaries you can speak with to see if their guild has what you are looking for.

Generally speaking, the larger guilds are going to have a wider array of people who will be on when you can get on.

Another suggestion is try and find a guild that uses ventrilo or teamspeak. You wouldn't believe what a difference it will make to be able to actually talk to the people you play with. It intensifies the friendships you will make.

Last but not least! If Pacific isn't your cup of tea, make a character on other shards and see if you like them better. Even though there is a lot of nonsense that goes on in "General Chat" you can still get a good feel for a shard but getting in there and talking to people. Not to mention, you can also find people to play with when you get on by asking people if they want to come do something with you. It sounds like you know what you are doing with peerless, so get keys to something and offer up a free ride in general chat. If you aren't comfortable doing this to spawn, then try hitting up the spawns in Ilshenar where you don't have to worry about being raided.

Hope this helps and I do hope you won't give up...UO is a wonderful game and it would be a shame to see anyone go.

Best of luck to you,

Tiny

Thanks guys for the support!

I might actually give Atlantic a try if I didn't have to make a char from scratch! Just too much of a pain to sit through that. I don't think I want to spend any money on transfer either, it's just my way to tell EA to go **** themselves (Crappy customer service, not casual player friendly, necessity to upgrade if you want to compete etc, I'm not spending any more money than I need to on this game).

I was walking around in New Haven (Pacific) the other day, hoping to kidnap a newbie and brainwash him/her to become my biatch (hehe) but instead I ran into someone from one of the larger guilds and we swapped contact info after a chat. Hopefully that'll lead to something else.

And Tiny Dancer, I actually did try other shards out... I used play on several Japanese shards when I worked over in Japan a few years back. I actually loved it over there, found the people to be more polite and more creative when it comes to organising their own events, and I actually get to use a video game to keep my Japanese from getting rusty! But then the main problem is, now that I'm back in the Pac time zone, they're 16 hours ahead of us, and unless I log in at 4:00am in the morning there's really no way for me to meet any one. So yeah. Oh well.

To me New Haven allows for reasonably rapid builds and some of the quest stuff is actually worthwhile for a little longer! So starting a new character on a different shard is somewhat painless.

Have not played in over 2 weeks ... refueling outage and 12 hour shifts I just wanna sleep when I get home. Only 2 more weeks, though.

You might want to check around on Pacific, and the other west coast shards.

I know that at times there are guilds of Japanese players on some of those shards (Lake Austin, I know for sure) that are practically independent communities unto themselves, and don't interact much with the english speakers (in game or on forums). You might be able to post on one of the forums that are Japanese-language (I know they exist, but no clue as to their locations), and ask around for Japanese playing on the US shards, that would be interested in you playing with them, where you are more local than they are.

Greetings, Whinemaker,

What sort of character(s) do you have? I have a couple of underdeveloped characters on Pacific that I'd be willing to put some time into to keep you amused with until you find more permanent companionship, if you haven't already. (I see you have some offers) Or I might want to start a new character, depending on what you already have.

My gaming hours are also irregular.
I too do not PvP.
I do have SA, but have logged maybe a total of 5 hours in the Abyss, and don't really remember much of it.
I. am. EternaNewb!
No making me Whine. Wine is ok, though. ;)

That's true, although, well, may be it's just me, sometimes you'll still need to gather your LRC suit or some powerscrolls to get started. I mean I could get by that by chatting up somebody and get them to help me out but I just don't like taking freebies. Most people are just so kind that they insist I take whatever they give me, but on the other hand people just don't seem to understand that I still appreciate their help the same even if I give something back in return. Maybe that's why I keep having trouble making friends in a video game, I dunno lol.

And good luck with work!

Yeah actually I think some of the people I met over at Yamato mentioned the same thing to me, most of them actually live in Japan but wanted housing space, that's why they migrated when the shard launched. I'll probably still run into the same problem as playing over at the Japanese shards (when my friends log in at night it's 4:00-8:00am here, and when I do it's around 12:00pm-4:00pm for them... I guess I could get up early on a Saturday or a Sunday but most likely I'd still be partying from the night before, so chances are it still wouldn't work). Thanks for the info though I'll keep a note on it.
And btw, the reason they don't interact with the English speakers is that most of them stress out merely by the thought of having to speak a foreign language! :D Just keep your sentences short and simple when you talk to them and you might make some new Japanese friends too!

And yars and Luna, thank you very much.
I'll try to send you a PM later tonight, need to be away from the computer for now.

Cheers!

Hi Noble,

I talked to Luna and yars here through messaging, and I ran into my UO neighbour and also this dude who's the guildmaster of a certain large guild on Pacific, not long after I started this thread. I talked to each of them about doing some hunting together, but RL sucks so bad right now I just don't have time to play/meet up with them until early or mid November earliest.

Yesterday I had some free time in the evening and joined my UO neighbour's guildies (although my neighbour wasn't present) for a quick Mel and Oak run for about 1 hour and 30 min (and I was going afk from time to time so my interaction with other players was somewhat minimal). It was kind of fun although we didn't really had the chance to mingle and get to know each other, mostly I think was due to everyone's being busy with his/her own agenda and it was pretty much just a "kill the boss and dismiss" kinda thing.

That's pretty much how it is atm.

Cheers!
