Ok, I'm a Day 1 player returning after a huge, huge long break. My main character is a Tamer (my 3rd Tamer, actually), and I'm sure he needs re-configured. ;)

I was running a very popular template for the time... But I'm sure things have changed and I can re-configure the character. I'm at 105ish in Taming, 110 Lore, working on Vet, and have Magery at 100, and apparently was working on Peacemaking (I'm sure to make Taming easier). I'm sure my gear is junk for now.

Help me out here - I love the Tamer playstyle and want to catch up to the times. :)

my Tamer setup:

120 Taming
120 Lore
120 Vet
120 Music
120 Discord
100 Magery

Metalstorm

Seasoned Veteran
Stratics Veteran
Stratics Legend
Get ye some soulstones!

My template is much like mrawdtsi's

I'm still working on all the music skills but it seems although peacemaking is great for most taming tasks, Discord is a powerful tool when hunting.

With a set of stones one can switch off between them as needed.

There are times when I'm on a strictly tame only mission on the really nasty beasties that I'll stone vet and run peace and discord together.

My current setup is:

taming 108.5 (will be 120)
lore 120
vet 115.5 (will be 120
magery 120
music 100 (will raise to 120 when other skills are finished)
peace 104.6 (will be 115 unless I can get a 120 scroll)
discord 97.7 (will be 120)

I've had this char for over 9 years but really just started using & training him early this year.

Had I known how much fun the role of a tamer was, I would have started all those years ago!

Ok - I'm mostly back up to speed on playing my Tamer, and am working on Taming gains - slowly. Heh. I'm at just approaching 104 and it's of course slow. Pretty much just getting GGS-type gains at this point.

My Taming cap is only 110.0 - I'll get a 120 scroll eventually but I suppose no point now as it's a ways to 110 anyhow.

I like to also PLAY, though, so I'm wondering what I've missed in the 3-4 years I've been away. I have a fairly good dragon from back then - but I see dragons aren't cool anymore. ;)

I also have a couple of cu sidhes and a rune beetle - but I'm not sure how to evaluate if they're good or not since I don't know what the stat/skill ranges are for them. Nor do I know if those are still good pets either. ;)

And I also have my trusty nightmare that I've had since the day I was able to tame one.

So... Heh. Are cu sidhes and rune beetles still "good" pets, and if so, what sort of stat and skill ranges denote good ones. Or... what else should I go out and tame? I don't think I can control greater dragons yet... (~104 Taming, 110 Lore, 96ish Vet).

Cus and Rune Beetles are good pets. You can find the stat/resist/skill ranges on their respective entries in the Hunter's Database. Here are the links for ya:
Cu Sidhe
Notes: Only Elves can tame them; Their Strength and Hit Points halve once tamed; a human can ride them when wearing the Pads of the Cu Sidhe footwear.
Rune Beetle
Notes: Once tamed its Eval Int, Poisoning, drop to 90% of the pretamed value. This is the new skill cap for these two skills for that beetle, all other skills can train to 100.0.

Cool - I'll check out mine when I get home and can log in. I remember the rune beetle killed me a dozen or so times while I was trying to tame it, hehe.

Match your Rune Beetle with a Bak Kitsuni. Those two deliver the most DPS of any pet or combo of pets that can also tank.

I can't stand the look of the Bake, heh. I'd rather be less effective. ;)
