[Help] - Can pack horses be used to save items when (temporarily) closing UO accounts?

I intend to (let's say temporarily) close my UO accounts (eg. for a year), but I've too many items to fit into my characters' bank accounts. Can I use pack horses (bonded of course) to save my items, such that should I reactivate my account years later, my pack horses together with my items will still be mine and retrievable?

The last few times I closed and reactivated my UO accounts years apart, I had to squeeze all my items into my bank accounts (and discarded the excess items which took up too much space or weight), all of which were fully retrievable upon reactivation of accounts. But this time round, I'm thinking if pack horses can do the trick, it'll be much more convenient.
Does anyone know for sure, or has successfully used this method?
Thank you!

Pack horses can not be stabled with items in their pack, nor will they auto log when you do. If you log out while the pack has items in it, the animal will remain in-game and eventually go wild.

You can use 1 blue beetle per character to store additional items provided you ride the beetle before logging out.

No sorry, the packies will eventually unbond from you and go wild, along with all your stuff.

Like Merus said, get a blue beetle for each character and store stuff on them, as long as you're riding it you're things are safe :)

Agree with the above statements. Any tamed pet holding an item(s) cannot be stabled. Blue beetles are the way to go because you can log out while still riding them.

On this note, I've sometimes wondered what happens if you load up all the packies and transfer shards... But never log into the other shard before the account closes... Would it keep the transferred character, pets and all the belongings safely stored on the new shard? Or would it eventually get wiped as an incomplete transfer...

Not worth risking with the blue beetles. Place a max storage house. Refresh the account every 3 months. Keep the high end items int he bank and the low end in the house.... However with that said the best and safest way to do it is to just leave one account open at all times just to be certain your house doesnt go poof do to one of the UO staffs many glitches.

I do not recommend this either. I do recommend the blue beetle though. You can't even be certain if you aren't logging in periodically that your house won't go down if you don't check to be sure your account stays up. If it's a matter of funds for awhile then if it's only a couple of months you'll be gone everything should be fine to just leave it and come back in 2 months. If it's going to be more than that I suggest blue beetles and you might consider a temp account. Start a new no frills account and pack it full. That'd be safer.

There is no risk with blue beetles...you're ON it....

When Origin first opened up for transfer I took everything over from Napa and left all my things on blue beetles my characters were riding. My account was down for 2 years AFTER that....and when I re-subbed everything I had was still on them..because I was on them :)

I don't see how blue beetles can be risky unless you log out in an unsafe place or log out without being on them....or log out in an unsafe place not on them when servers go down....all of which, we all should know by now, not to do...I hope.

Blue Beetles are absolutely 100% safe as long as you follow a few rules:
  • Make sure your beetle is well fed!
  • Log out ON the Beetle
  • Log out in a SAFE location where you will insta-log
  • Make sure you have not flagged when you log out. As in you haven't attacked anything in the last 5 min. (Check this by trying to log in another character on the account to be sure you have insta-logged.)
Follow that and the Blue beetle is totally not a problem. I've NEVER lost a blue beetle except when I stupid-idly logged out OFF my Beetle.

I would say that the 90 cycle is far more risky than blue beetles. Never had any issue with one used as storage while a character was logged out... But the stories of tragic losses playing roulette with the billing system are numberous.

I recently came back after a ten year absence. Most of my characters were riding blue beetles fully loaded, as were their bank boxes. Everything was there when I came back ten years later. So definitely ride the beetles and fully load them and your own packs.

Ill remind all of you, that Houses in UO worked perfectly for a long time. Then UO changed one thing and it led to a crap shoot of housing changes.

Blue beetles may work now, but who knows what crap shoot they could go through when UO changes some bits about taming coming up in the expansion.

Also, let me remind you that when they fixed the shard shield token exploit, it screwed up the housing system which had worked the same way for 10 years plus.
The two should have been pretty unrelated, however the devs failed to recognize what missing with one thing could do to another. With all the changes coming in the expansion, I wouldnt expect much to work the same. I sincerely expect a domino affect of bugs/changes to follow the publish.

Like I said before, I definitely think the safest way is to keep an account open at all times. If that isnt an option beetles may be the best bet now, but id be weary of the expansion screwing that up as well. After that if you have a friend that can check up on your house every 2 days, it might be best to play the housing game.

I would never say anything in UO is a guarantee, be careful with any choice you make. :)

I would at least wait until the new money system goes in to save bank space from checks.

@Atlantean Angel sad to see you go but if you must do you have 175 storage in your bank and 7 chars Bank 175 + char 125 + Blue bug (ridden) gives you 425 plus whatever your char is wearing * 7 chars = 2975 items is a lot of stuff or you could just open a new account for 1 month and use it for storage or transfer stuff to another shard with Xfer tokens or reach out to other players and hitch a ride to other shards. There are many ways to store your stuff for when you return.
