I just now started UO 2days ago cause I have read good information on it. I am now in the UO world chilling near some sheep and goats, they are wondering why the hell I am on there farm. This MMO been around for awhile and I never knew anything about it. Only MMO I played was Eq2 second was Matrix Online 3rd WoW and conquer online. So now I am in UO world...what can I do in it, is it like Elder scrolls Morrowind? can you make items and put spells on them? create traps? The game looks decent for it to be 2d and as of now I am enjoying. So let me in on some information thanks.

Welcome! I'm an oldtime player, just come back after several years away, and have been playing for two months. You can do darn near anything. You can be a murderer, a thief, a paladin, a warror of many different types, a wizard, or even a necromancer. You can be a carpenter, and make tables, chairs, or wooden weapons. Those sheep you're standing next to? If you have a bladed weapon (like the dagger you started with) you can double click your weapon and target the sheep... and it'll shear them! You can then take the wool and spin it into yarn... one bundle of wool makes three balls of yarn. When you have at least three balls of yarn, you can weave it into cloth! Once you have cloth, you can make clothes.

You can be a blacksmith, a beggar, a scavenger (a very profitable activity, that.)

It's a lot to take in... but I keep coming back. I've never found an MMO quite like it.

Yeah, the marketing of this game has really suffered the last couple of years. Last box that was put on store shelves was 2 years ago, but they have mentioned when they release the next expansion later this year that there will be a new box, so hopefully more people will join.

As far as what you can do....that is really up to you. Just remember as a new player, you only have 700 skill points to work with, so plan your template. Some skills can only be taken to 100 points and other can be increased to 120 by eating a powerscroll. I guess the first step would be to ask yourself is what do I like doing? Is it hunting, PVP, crafting, or roleplaying and then set your template to what you want to do.

If you like hunting or PVP, then you have to determine what type of char you normally like to play....Magery or Melee. Melee is then broken down further by Swords, Fencing, Mace, and Archery. There is no set template or skills that you have to follow, so it can get pretty complicated fast.

Best advice is to join a guild that has a mix of new and vet players. There are usually several on every shard. They can help you set-up your char(s), keep you alive on hunts, and other things to hep you get going in UO. They probably will have Teamspeak or Ventrilo if you use either one of those voice programs.

If you want, let us know what you like/want to do in UO, and what shard your on, and hopefully someone here can point you in the right direction. And by the way...Welcome to UO.

Welcome,

Yes UO can be alot to take in the first time. It takes some time to get use to all of it. But thats what makes UO so great. Freedom in everything.
You can build your character the way you want. Have a house and design it the way you like. Go to places when and whenever you like. (That you be ready for it to survive is another question.) You can play in groups or alone.

We can give you tons of suggestions and ideas. But eventualy it all is up to you whatever way you like to go with characters.

If you got questions, we always here to give you a push in the right direction.

LOL how did I miss this MMO o_O...
...so much. Well my class are samurai/nijitsu, when I seen that as a class selection first thing I said out loud was "wth!!" I was very suprized. I also play Manobi online and what you all telling me on freedom I get that type of freedom in Manobi but...it is limited. right now I am having trouble trying to level my steath I got it to 25.9% but I was never able to sneak keep telling me I failed, my hide skill is nearly maxed at 80.5%. How can I get my sneak to work cause I keep failing it and it wont level any more. I am not sure what role I want to take as of now but most likely I would take all "freedom". I am on the pacific shard/sever ingame name is Insight be happy to meet anyone. I can really use some help on my sneak leveling problem.

Well, just like in real life, it's harder to sneak if you're wearing bulky armor. :D

At your stealth level, the best thing to do is to take all your armor off and just wear normal clothes. Then, as your stealth level gets higher, you can start adding leather armor and so on.

Hope this helps.

We have 2 other forums for Thieves - or at least use of Stealing and/or Stealth. If you plan on PvP, you would want the PvP Thief Forum or for stealing from mobs, crates, etc the UO Thief forum. Even if not doing a thief, the tips in these places on skill gains should help you.

Be sure to be in New Haven to start ... use an NPC to train your desired skill and then take a quest in the old town area to raise it even further. Some of the quests have some good starter rewards for finishing ... and the selected skill will be 50 or higher.

Welcome to the gaming worlds longest running MMO ... date of birth: late Sept 1997.

:D The FAQs here and in the other forums can be seriously overwhelming to a new person. But ... here is where you can ask away and get some good inputs to nearly anything.

And don't forget, UO offers craft skills (Inscription, Alchemy, Blacksmith, Bowcraft/Fletching, Carpentry, Tinkering), the chance to do gardening (growing of plants!!!) and goodness knows how many permutations of battle skills.

To gain stealth go to New Haven and buy the stealth skill up to 40 from the NPC Ninjitsu Instructor. Then after buying the skill take the new player quest to train stealth. You need to go to old haven, (the town with undeath W of New Haven) for fast gaining till 50 skill. Go back to the NPC for a little reward. It should get you started with stealth.

Wow I can hire NPC to journey with me this is tight as hell...:D. I told him to attack me and he did O.O, me and him was boxing lmao. Doing my sneak quest now maybe that's why it would not level any more. well I'll keep in touch.

You realy need to buy more stealth skill from a NPC first to get it moving.

To walk just have the pointer right infront of your character. Also make sure "always running" is turned off in option. And be on foot to stealth. :)

You can gain to 50 with just clothing if you follow the instruction from the other posts above. After 50 you add a little more armor to gain.

slimc27 welcome to the wonderful world of UO! as others have said, there is SO much you can do - it does get very overwhelming for a new player, especially if you don't have a friend/mentor to guide you along. since you're playing on pacific, i'd recommend checking out the Pacific forum itself (http://vboards.stratics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=59) and maybe posting that you're a new player and wonder if there's any guild on PAC that help out newbies - that can be very helpful - a guild would get you set up with some sweet armor and weapons, and could help you train up some skills.
also, if you haven't yet, you can always fool around with placing your very own house, to start storing some of the stuff you pick up along the way :)

ooops - just noticed that you had posted on the PAC forum but then moved your post. you can totally post stuff like "hi i'm new is there anyone willing to help out a new player?" on the PAC board :)
