I am not sure this is the correct forum but off topic seemed to have nothing to do with UO at all. I am considering returning to UO (I used to play on Great Lakes) because I have so many great memories of playing. I am wondering if there is still a large player base though. I was mostly into crafting and pvm, I really enjoyed my T-hunter although it took many, many hours of gameplay to get him up and running. I was playing alot during the period when they had just opened up the non pvp land (was it called Trammel?) and left about the time EQ2 first came out. Have I missed too much? If I did return, what is a shard that is active with pvm? Any comments would be great, thanks!

Welcome back... You've missed quite a bit, but it really won't be hard to get back into the game, unlike some other MMOs. There's several shards that have active guilds that help new and returning players back up to speed, so don't be afraid to ask for help.

There's still a decent player base on the Eastern US shards. The western shards are much smaller for the most part. The biggest Eastern shard would be Atlantic.

Treasure Hunting just got a major revamp in the last couple years, and there's several new crafting skills, though how the item properties are done will be quite different than what you remember. Items with magical properties are now the norm.

And, yes, this is exactly the forum for your questions....
