Heavy vs. Light Cannons

Please advise me if I should post this in another forum. I don't think the beta test forum is all that active.

So what is the difference between these two ship armaments aside from the cost of production? Can the heavy cannon only use heavy cannonballs? Do they have the same range or damage?
