just make sure you are stealing the right weight. if you at at 6o+ skill, you need to be stealing items that weigh 6 or 7 stones for optimum gains. as you move up, increase. 70 = 7 stones and so on

oh, and the easiest way is to steal stacks of bottles, since they weigh 1 stone each

Still gaining very slow and i have no clue why. Does guilded/unguilded matter?

I've trained thieves without them being guilded before with no trouble.
I was training today. Current skill is 83.x with about 695 total skill points used. I spent about an hour and gained about 1.5 total.

I don't know if it will help, but here's some details on my thief.
Guilded, Stealing 8 stone heater shields out of a bag on my pack llama who's guarding me. I train in my fel keep, and use 20 shields. My UOA macro looks like this.

Use Skill (stealing)
Target (a shield)
Pause 11000

Basically my macro consists of those 3 lines repeated 20 times. When I've went through all my shields I repack them into the bag they were in, and put that bag back on the llama and run it again. Its boring as hell, but it seems to work pretty good.

Best advice I could give is to try and soulstone off as many extra skill points as you can manage. If you can get your cap under 300 (or is it 250?) you will gain faster. Don't use any + skill items, try to find items that way 1/10th of your skill. (I'm in the mid 80's and stealing 8 stone shields) I personally try to stay away from stackable items because (at least in my mind) you can steal part of the stack and since half the stack might not be the right weight its too easy of an attempt to gain.

If you have doubts about the item your stealing being the correct weight, try to get a skill tutor statue or a crystal ball of knowledge. Either of those items will tell you if you're stealing the right items or not.

Don't know if this will help, but when I trained my thief, she was unguilded and parked with a packy in Paladin Isle, Trinsic, Fel. And rather than stick to one item, I rotated them. IIRC, there were bandies, gold, emty bottles and something else, although for the life of me I can't bring to mind what it was. I've slept since then! Hope that helps :)

If you don't want to trail a packy round you can gain stealing items from a bag on the floor if you're in bucc's den.

Or in Jhelom at the docks outside the guard zone. I used to drop items in the barrels there and steal them back out.

as per Black Sun's Macro it is the only way i have trained stealing for years.. i am currently working on my 3rd thief .. I am currently at 97 and using the same ol guidelines as for years im still gaining as i write.I am using a packy at my house in Felluca and using 15 warforks and 15 harps.. this toon is scrolled for 120 as he hits 100 ill use harps and dye tubs till he's done not sure why you would hit a snag, but i have stoned all this toon skillz except for my standard 50 chiv , to get him around and stealing... less skillz more gains as allways.good luck:thumbup1:

I hit a wall last night at 96.5, I was stealing clubs (9 stones), but my crystal ball of knowledge said around 95.8 that they were too easy. I have since switched to mauls (10 stones) and manged to get from 95.8 to 96.5, but that took nearly 3 hours.

I'd sell my soul for a few 1.0 SOTs right about now.
