ArenaNet has gone beyond the normal creation of creating characters. As a player ,you choose what race, sex, profession you play in most games and you are off. In Guild Wars 2 players will also have what they call a "Personal Story.”
Once players choose their character and build them they will go into a biography and answer questions concerning their character. Depending on how the players respond to those question influences the outcome of that particular character. Some players may make their characters charming and kind. Others may choose to make their character rude and mean. These choices will reflect in the game by your home instance and how NPC’s may deal with you.
A player’s home instance will reflect by the choices in the game the player makes. Players from the same race will have different home instances. At this time each race will have 10 biography questions with 3 to 5 answers for each question.. Now this may be changed by release but for now this is what information players have. This gives thousands of different story combinations.
There rewards that players can get from their personal story. They will reflect in their home instance as merchants, titles, special lore, cinematics, city clothing, ect ect. Some rewards will be prestigious and others will be less. These rewards will not make a player character more powerful. These are just basic rewards and does not help the character in way to have an edge over any other players.
Biography choices and things you do in the game will be recorded in a journal that players can open and see what their characters. Once a storyline is completed then another page will open up with their accomplishments. This gives the role players, the semi role players, and players in general to see what they have accomplished in the game.
