Guild Thieves - An Idea?

Well, in short, a guildmate was recently the target of a guild thief. This thief used a disguise kit to hide his true identity to get himself into our guild, got what he was after and then quit. As a result, the victim left the guild (as far as I can tell, believing the GM should pay the damages for guilding the thief to begin with).

Now, while I find this act despicable, it raises a question in my mind: Why can a person be guilded while under the effects of a disguise kit? If it were changed so your character can't be in disguise/incognito to receive a guild invite, this act could have been prevented.

While it won't end guild thefts altogether, it would at least inhibit this kind of grieving...

I have a thief, and I like playing my thief. But I do my stealing with honest risk, not by deception and undermining the tentative trust placed on new recruits within the guild.

Sounds like a guild desperate for members, inviting someone they don't know. It's the GM's fault. Things are fine as they are.

gives incentive for guild recruiters to possess forensic eval skill. you could've easily detected a thief among your ranks.

Ahh crap he's back. Haven't seen a Rico post in a long time it seems.

Maybe your guild needs to review their guilding process, but in the end stuff like this happens. This time it was someone wearing a kit and they struck quickly afterwards, but it could have been a member that was guilded for a while and then they decide to leave the guild for one reason or another and on their way out they "take" some stuff. I've seen and heard of people that sell their account(s) and forget to unguild their chars and the new owners take advantage of the situation.

Sorry to hear that but it's the way of UO. UO has catered to scammers and abusers of the system from the beginning. You won't get any sympathy here because it's cool to be a hard-ass UO thug and delight in other's loss. Guild thieving is the last vestiges of a scorned and desperate group of players that will fight tooth and nail to keep the last shred of what they liked about UO the most.

Sweeney - No, we are not desperate for members we usually talk to and help out potential members before we ask if they'd like to join us. We'd talked to the thief a bit before he was guilded (or rather, the GM talked to him, I had to log). And although he apaprently raised a red flag or two, he did end up guilded...

northwoodschopper - And are we just supposed to not guild anyone belonging to the Thieves Guild?

Yes, we've changed our guilding process as a result of this, and I know stuff like this happens, I've been a victim of it a few times. And I'm aware that there are people already in the guild who could one day do something like this, but the fact remains that if he hadn't been in disguise when guilded, he never would have BEEN guilded. Both the GM and I know who he is and neither of us trusted him before or after this incident. I do take equal blame for the thief being guilded for reasons you need not know. I just don't see why being guilded under the effects of a kit is allowed in the first place.

As much as I can understand your frustration and taken......."there is no honor among theives", that's as old as dirt.

As a theif, you do what you have to do to aquirre what is you're after.
I've gypped players who worked effortlessly clearing pumpkins.....I've sat idley and watched for others waiting to get a stealable.....I was quicker.....and if i had the integrity, I too would join a guild under disguise and rip you off.

You guys took someone on and trusted too easily........a theifs a theif....that's the way it goes. You got taken and now want justice??
he he , hardly.

Just remember the lesson learned.

thieves guild = steal from other players. no other reason to join.
thieves guild = access to disguises. a privilege, to hide your identity from other players.

forensic eval = knowledge of a player's affiliation with the thieves' guild, a judge of character
forensic eval = blowing off a thief's disguise.

so there you have it, the game of cat and mouse. you want to guard from thieves? have a detective available.

Hire a good detective. The forensic eval skill is useful, but there is nothing to keep a thief from leaving the NPC thief guild, being guilded, then re-joining the thief guild. A good detective knows all of the thieves on his or her shard - where they hang out, what methodologies/ideologies they espouse, how they dress, who they associate with, etc.

Also, it is important to know the player thief guilds on your shard. Some thieves are comfortable with guild infiltration, some are not. Not all thieves are created equal.

By the way, any half-decent detective is also a master thief. You can't play the game if you don't know the rules. ;)

If you don't want to risk losing items from them, yes, don't guild anyone in a Thieves Guild. Thieves steal from players, it's all natural. This is why you don't guild people you don't know, especially if their a thief. If you do guild someone you don't know then make sure your items are safe from thieves.

Don't forget the forensic eval skill though. You can easily tell if someone is a thief even at 0 forensic eval as long as you have room to gain skill. Set the skill to go up, target the player. If you gain, they're obviously a thief. You can't gain skill forensic eval off non-thieves.
