Greater Dragon question

I have noticed GDs with 148 dex and 148 stamina, do they train up to that or are they capped at 125 when tamed?

Any magery using pet can pretty much bless itself.

I found an insanely good Greater Dragon once so I rushed to tame it. When I got it back to the stable it's hitpoints had dropped by 90. It had blessed itself. Although the rest was good, its HPs were a bit low for my liking, so I released it.

Tame it right away if you want, but it takes roughly 2 min for Bless to wear off. Check it when you're done taming and 2 min has passed.

If it was during combat, could be blessed pet.

OTOH, there is a bug that does allow dex to get MUCH higher than 125.

While we're on the subject, what does Dex do for a pet - does it help swing speed like it does for melee toons?

I tamed a Rune Beetle the other day and for the first time out of a ton of pets I've tamed in my 4 month Taming career, I noticed it had over 125 Dex. It had 138 post taming, and it is NOT blessed/agility buffed!

Thanks =)

I think that it makes them faster.
A frshly tamed pet whit low dex/stam is much slower than a trained one with 125 dex or more.

I don't know about the swing speed but it could be possible.
And maybe it helps Cu's to heal faster too as they use the healing skill that depends on dex ?

I have fully trained Rune with 157 DEX

Dex affects melee attacks. It also seems to affect movement speed - not while mounted, but while the pet is following you.

Rune beetles typically have above 125 dexterity. I like my rune beetles to have around 160 dex, 130 poison, and 110 eval. This is a mean stat/skill combination.

I made a post a while back complaining about the following speed of a rune beetle, saying it was slower than molasses and claiming it was bugged. Nobody mentioned Dex at the time but come to think of it, it was not fully trained and I don't think it's dex was 125 yet. This would explain what was going on when I described the pet following speed as 'bugged'.

I checked out some other PVP worthy pets on Stratics and found this:

Bake Kitsune: Max dex 145
Nightmare: Max dex 105 (really means it can be trained to 125, right?)
Cu Sidhe: Max Dex 160
Greater Dragon: Max dex 148
Rune Beetle: Max Dex 170

I never knew to consider dex when taming a pet... I'll have to do some testing to see if these creatures can run after targets in PVP faster.

Typical tamer pets, ranked from highest possible max dex (AFTER taming) to lowest max dex (when completely trained):

170 Rune Beetle

145 Bake Kitsune

135 Hiryu

130 White Wyrm

125 Boura (Ruddy, Lowland, or High Plains), Cu Sidhe, Dragon, Dread Warhorse, Fire Steed, Frenzied Ostard, Greater Dragon, Nightmare, Unicorn

I believe that if a rune beetle, bake kitsune, hiryu, or white wyrm has dex over 125 after it is tamed, that will be the pet's dex cap for the rest of its life. For example, I'm pretty sure that if your rune beetle has 158 dex after taming, that's as high as it will ever go. However, if it happened to have dex under 125 after taming, then its dex will go up to 125 as you train it.

Dex is extremely important in pets. It determines both the movement speed of the pet, as well as it's attack rate (by that I mean swing speed). I always look for high dex pets, especially with rune beetles. That's why, if you are a mage with 120 eval int you should always keep your pets blessed. It will make a very noticeable difference in how effective they are in combat. And furthermore, attack rate is determined not by the pet's dex, but by the pet's stamina, so it is important to keep your pets blessed so that they are always at max stamina when they go into combat.

good info thanks

i just checked the weld and lucked into finding a beautiful pure white Cu with 155 DEX!

But after I tamed it, it went to 77. Will it train back to 155?

Oddly enough the Rune Beetle I tamed with high dex had 134 right after taming, I didnt have to train it. So not sure why the Cu went to 77, they cant bless themselves , and I doubt anything in there would bless them

Unfortunately no, whatever the dex/stam a pet had before taming if it's less than 125 after taming then it'll go up to 125 and if it's more than 125 it'll stay at post tame level.

And as far as I know no Cu can have more than 125 dex after taming :(

And I'll add another tip, it is also very important to keep your pets as close to 100% health as possible, all the time. If they get heavily damaged it will reduce their stamina and that in turn will also affect your pet in all the ways described. And actually, now that I think of it, even movement speed is, I think, determined by stamina, not by dex, so again, keep your pet blessed and fully healed, as much as possible, all the time.

good info to know llewen, i always try to keep GD at full hp no matter what because pet hp = better breath weapon.

i did a test between a rune beetle I had with 134 dex and a chicken lizard I tamed with 86 dex. the runebeetle was remarkably faster. this is excellent information.

jeza are you sure, stratics seems to think that top Cu dex can go to 160. link below

my new white Cu had 155 Pre-Tame Dex but Post tame it dropped to sub 125, and I cant figure out why

I believe all stats except int get halved on taming with cu's, and several other tameables. So tamed cu will never have more than 125 dex unless it is blessed in some way. And yes, firebreath is another obvious reason to keep a greater dragon or a dread warhorse fully healed.
