Grave Robbing

I was recently doing a treasure map and it was inside of a graveyard! Which got me thinking, they should totally add grave robbing to the game! Let's all pretend to be developers and brainstorm what we would like to see in a grave robbing skill! Or it could just be another book you read like digging for sand and granite. Anyway, I'll start!

First of all, I would like to see random dirt patches appear at the base of gravestones in all the graveyards in the world. Making it rare enough so there is only ever a few dirt patches per graveyard before you have to move onto the next one.

Maybe add some patrolling guards that will attack you if you try to grave rob during the daytime. Grave robbing should only be allowed like 10pm-4am.

I want a chance for monsters to spawn when attempting to dig. Random encounters. Like a 1 in 50 chance a group of 10 zombies will spawn. A 1 in 500 chance a mini boss skeleton will appear. And a 1 in 1000 chance a boss as tough as a harbinger will appear. Among other things. Each one dropping it's own set of unique rare items. Like new necromancer spellbooks etc.

I want a chance to dig up decorative items. Such as spiderwebs (dyed brown?), bones, body parts called "decaying body part" dyed green/brown/blue/white, balls & chains, vines or roots, dead decaying flowers, black roses, rusty shovels and pickaxes, etc.

Or expand the rusty idea to all sorts of items. Using the colors of the bronze/jade character makers. Or some other dark brownish redish greenish color. Everything from lanterns, to jewelry, to candles that don't lite up, to helmets, to shields, glasses, etc.

Add some way to remove the rust from the items and have a 1 in 10,000 chance the rusty glasses could turn into mace & shield glasses or one of the other random library glasses.
Or the helmet could have a chance to be a rare helmet with good stats. You won't know until the rust is removed. 99% of the time you'd just get a 'broken helmet" or something.
The shields could give random properties and you'd have to get so so lucky for it to roll spell channeling with fc1 fc3 lrc 15 or whatever. Kind of like how the mana phasing orbs work. Random properties it can cycle through. Most of them would be stupid like necromancy +5 chivalry +5 :p

I want piece sets to collect such as the coffins that come from treasure chests. New art could make something like "titans bones" 3 piece sets. (Don't ask me why we have giant titan necromancer prisoners buried in our britannia graveyards with their shields and helmets and junk!)

I want new random toys such as a bag of powder that automatically destroys a corpse.
Or better yet, a powder you can sprinkle on a corpse that dissolves it's flesh and turns it into bones. It would basically just be named bone piles. For example, "Bones of a great hart" "Bones of an ogre" "Bones of a wandering healer" "Bones of Slasher of Veils" "Bones of Stranger" etc. Sort of like a trophy to keep after killing something or someone.

Maybe add a collection of books with short stories written in them too about loved ones saying goodbye or notes of how they died or something.

Oh and don't forget to add the necronomicon!

I guess that's all my ideas...
Anyone else have any? :)

Was thinking Forensic Evaluation could be the skill for grave robbing. With GM FE one would be able to 'detect' a grave ripe for pillaging. Perhaps minimum mining and spirit speak skills also?

Well hmmmmmm thinking of it as a nice idea....
Fel is mobbed with stones ... so it might go off to get more players to fel side and not ot keep the tram out of it they can have in their grave yards too but a bigger offering in fel.
Might be something for the dev to look into perhaps for a holloween event?

There is sand-sifting system that was used during the The Awakening story arc that I've always thought should be left in, should work in many areas of the map, and should have a long and potentially rotating list of rewards.

No reason the system can't be used in graveyards too. One set for graveyards, one set for desert, one set for dungeons, etc.

That gets around the issue of "no more new systems," because the system currently exists.

Been suggested a few times.

Sometimes as Archaeology, sometimes literally as "grave robbing," like this thread. Sometimes as both, one being positive karma and one being negative karma.

It seems a useful thing to have because it provides ongoing content. It could either be made like treasure maps or made like sand sifting.

But either way the point is that it'd be ongoing content and use existing system(s) merely repurposed and assigned different rewards.

Make no bones about it, I hope it would be cost-effective, unlike ship combat that can cost an arm and a leg.

I like the idea of Forensic Evaluation being a skill for it. We need more uses for the useless skills!

Spirit Speak would be a good idea too maybe after you dig up a grave there is a chance a ghost would appear and yell at you. Or curse you (debuff). Or tell you where a "prime" grave is located and if you don't have SS all you'll hear is OooOoOOo!
Or they could tell you where they hid their belongings before they died.
Or where they hid the stolen goods before they were hanged.
Or they could tell you to go ahead and have their stuff since they have no friends or family to take it. (All those little houses in Minoc have no use! Add a chest inside of them to open! Before the bank comes and takes the house back!)
Or maybe the ghost would want you to deliver a message to their loved ones from beyond the grave. Do it for a reward. Ignore it and nothing happens or you get cursed.

Maybe there could also be a chance if you have Forensic Evaluation you would discover that the body was not a natural death but actually a murder and it would start a quest line for you to go track down the murderer in a brigand camp, dungeon, or somewhere random in the world. Perhapsit could start with "You notice a cut in the bone, looks like it's from a Double Axe crafted in Skara Brae." So you go to the blacksmith in Skara Brae and ask who recently bought a Double Axe and he'll tell you an NPC. Figure out the right NPC and it's name turns red. Arrest them to turn into guards. Or kill them. Whatever the ghost wanted. Justice or revenge.

Mining could help you not get "cracked" items. Like you could dig up a rusty helmet, and if your mining skill is low it would be "cracked" because you accidentally hit it with your shovel. And if you remove the rust and its a rare artifact helmet it will have lower stats. Like a replica. Because it is damaged. Having GM mining would prevent you from cracking items when digging up the grave. Nobody wants a cracked lantern, cracked shield, etc. Except for people who like to collect everything!

Nah, I'd rather they fix what we already have first.
This is true.
We need more devs! :(
So much needs to be done but the team is too small.
We need old systems fixed and updated, bugs squashed, and new content added.
That's a lot to ask of one person. We still aren't even sure if the janitor knows how to code. Actually I doubt they even have a janitor. I bet poor Mesanna has to clean up the...stuff.

Well all ready have grave robbing in game now, the grave robbers call themselves IDOC'ers :p
Hehe. I guess you're right. Thread over. Might as well lock it now guys! :D

What is with all these acronyms?!?
LAUFS = Laughing About Ur Funny Sentance???
OFT = Orange Fruit Tree??? I didn't even know it was broken! Wait, do we even have orange trees in UO???
Somebody help me I am so confused!
Even I used one, SS. What does that mean? Ahh!
Must...get...off...the...internet!

I'm just kidding. I know LAUFS means laughs or laughing. I think OFT...means OFTLOG. But I almost thought it was a Q at first meaning Quoted For Truth. But who knows maybe OFT means something else. I really need to get off the internet now. Starting to go crazy. Every UO player knows SS means Spirit Speak. Or maybe not. Who else hates acronyms?"

These are good suggestions!
It would be much harder to find a diggable gravestone in Felucca since there are so many of them compared to just recalling around to different graveyards in trammel so it makes sense they would yield better rewards. You'd actually have to run around and search for a grave!
Or just the fact there are more gravestones would mean more diggable locations which is pretty much the same as 2x ore, 2x wood, 2x leather that Fel has.
But yeah I would be okay with Fel having some exclusive rewards in their graves that the Trammel side doesn't have.

And yes I think it would make a wonderful Halloween event! Although I'd kind of wish it would always be available. But I'd be fine if it was a yearly halloween event. As long as it's yearly. I get so confused when the devs make great systems and only use them once. Like the turkey map thing for thanksgiving.

There is sand-sifting system that was used during the The Awakening story arc that I've always thought should be left in, should work in many areas of the map, and should have a long and potentially rotating list of rewards.

I did not partake in the sand-sifting system :( Where can I get more information on that?
First thing I think of is panning for gold :p New system idea right there! Walk across the riverbanks panning for gold :p

What's with the no more new systems rule? :( New systems are fun. Although I guess they can be confusing and they do need to clean them up and lock down on certain things and then just tweak them like you're saying.

Rotating rewards is something the devs really need to look into. Systems usually die after the first month or so. Rotating new rewards into them every once in a while (NOT EVERY 5 YEARS!) would get people to go back and do them again. They should change weekly or monthly or 4 times a year.

Someone else suggested Grave Robbing not so long ago. Maybe you should dig up that thread.
Oh my gosh I'm DYING! That was a great pun hen! Was it intentional? Hehe. Yeah I think I will go "dig" it up. But not til after midnight when the guards are asleep ;)

I would love an archaeology system!

And what you said is 100% spot on.

Seems like something that can easily be added in as a quick fun new thing to do to keep us happy til the next story arch starts or a new expansion is released (I'm guessing in 2020?)

Add it in fast and simple at first then keep adding to it every few months to make it better and better. Or update it once a year. Stop abandoning systems! We need systems that grow.

WE NEED MORE DEVS!

Make no bones about it, I hope it would be cost-effective, unlike ship combat that can cost an arm and a leg.
All it would cost is a shovel and the chance you could be locked away for the rest of your life :)

Wouldn't that be annoying if it was like ship combat? First you need to craft a shovel, but no first you must sail to a dock floating in the middle of nowhere and buy overpriced metal, then melt that metal, which requires a new forge you must craft, then scoop out the impurities, which requires a new tool you must craft, then pound out the shovel blade, which requires a new hammer you must craft, then craft a handle, which requires a new saw you must craft, then sand the handle, which requires sandpaper which you must craft, but now you need gloves, which requires 1000 barbed leather to craft, and the gloves can only be used once per dig, and it takes 15 digs to dig up a grave, and once your done you need to spend 1000 water and 1000 bread to repair yourself, wth??? WTH??? (Joy, more acronyms!) Oh and then your shovel breaks after the first grave and you have to start all over!

Regarding the sifting system:

http://www.uoguide.com/The_Awakening#Act_IV

It's defunct now.

Regarding the "no new systems rule." Well, no one said it was a rule. Rather, it's a strongly-asserted suggestion that I make. I think that they will get more value by using existing systems and draping new content over them, rather than by creating new systems or even by making great alterations to existing ones.

I think its a good thought.

Sadly like others I doubt we have the manpower to do anything neat like that.

Again I'll suggest that those who are unhappy about the lack of devs write to [email protected]....... and let him know how you feel about it.

Level 7 treasure maps drop coffin pieces. It takes 3 pieces to complete the whole coffin. There are 3 pieces facing south and 3 pieces facing east.

http://www.uoguide.com/A_Coffin
thanks for the info, have not gotten a piece yet unless I missed it, must be rare.

I would love this OP idea as my T hunter is fun but I have no room for another skill, although it there were very rare drops and a fun fight I would be happy nonetheless.

Regarding the sifting system:

http://www.uoguide.com/The_Awakening#Act_IV

It's defunct now.
Wow! The sifting system is almost exactly what I described in my original post! It's perfect! All they'd have to do is add a rare chance for some boss monsters to spawn and some cool items to collect off their corpses and I'd be happy!

Perfect system! Already in place! Just tweak it to be used in graveyards!

*looks for the devs*

Copy. Paste. Change items.

Sounds too easy! Which means they'll probably never do it! :sad3:

They'd rather make new overly complex systems that hardly anyone uses like refinements.

I would rather spend the night (midnight-6am game time) digging up graves with my friends hoping for the rare 0.1% chance a monster so tough spawns it shuts down the whole graveyard! Add a timer too if it isn't killed by 6am (game time) it explodes into a pile of ash and nobody gets the rewards. This would make it impossible to solo and would require group play! Everyone on global chat would scream "Holy cow "Insert Name Here" is in the Vesper Graveyard! Hurry we only have 3 hours left to kill it!" (15 minutes game time). Having an encounter this rare (Only able to dig graves for 30 minutes every 2 hours and if it doesn't spawn in the first 15 minutes of digging you wouldn't have enough time to kill it.) would make the content and items last a long time!

Of course there would be lesser boss monsters that also spawn that can be soloed. There could be a boss for newbies. A boss for soloing. A boss for a small group 2-3 people. A boss for a group of 5-10 people. And then the ultra boss I described above which would take 15-25 people to take down in time before the sun rises and it explodes into ash!

I mean how perfect of a system would this be??? It would get everyone on the shard to rush over and help! And everyone would keep trying to get the reward for months or years because it would be such a rare thing to spawn.

Worth the devs time? I say YES!
Doom is dead. We need more fun group activities that aren't champ spawns!
And the best part is this would stay in the game forever. Not just be a 1 month halloween event or a 1 month story arch event that disappears forever never to been from again. (I missed out on the sifting system and that bums me out!) Just make sure you make it rare enough and tough enough to make it last for years! Draw a new art item for it that you can only get from it. And make sure you track it so the dupers don't dupe it. Heh.

It's not hard to think of cool rewards. Those ruined banners from the puzzle room are nice. I don't think they can be dyed (Can they?) so just rename it "A bloody ruined banner" and dye it red. I'd want one so bad! Heck I'd want two! *graves his shovel and starts digging every night*

This system has so much potential...
Please devs...?
Please...?
With a cherry on top? :smooch:
