There is no advantage beyond the banner itself. It's just a way for other posters to see you're a governor in game.

Doesn't it allow them to access the hidden shard governor forums too? They were never used very much, but I do remember having access to them on here when I was a governor, before I became staff.

I didn't think that forum was still hidden. I'll check it out. It's pretty dead either way.
