did a semidar spawn in fire dungeon and ran out with scrolls on me into serps hold, a guy was chasing me i figured he was a scout for a raiding guild, and i got a 20 anat and 15 mage which i hid under a bunch of 110s scrolls... somehow he was able to target these scrolls even though they were hidden, and he was lucky enough for the chance to kick in to not go gray from stealing both times... my fault for standing there but how can someone target an item hidden under other things

It's not hard to get under items while snooping. Simple act of moving the items out of the way and trying to move the items right under them before the other one moves right back so the item below will appear on top.

Also when you try to move too many items that you can't move, there's a bug where the item you are trying to move disappears from view in the pack (even though it is really there) and thus you are able to see the items under them. It's kind of a lag bug. When the bag is opened again the item returns.

Also the item you are hiding may not be directly below the item and the thief was able to select the very edge of the item below.

Moral of the story: Don't expect the hiding to always work.

It is possible he had you pack open when you first got the scrolls and tried to steal one when they first dropped but maybe you moved out of range. Either way if that was the case he would have had one of the scrolls on last target.

Aye. That's how I do it. Sneak in, find the couple people who are working the champ, snoop and wait for the scrolls to pop in the pack and target the good ones.

Once you get the bag open and not move, no matter how far away the target moves the bag stays open, unless they do move off screen.

If your 120 stealing I think you don't go grey from stealing 1 stone items.

Not really. It's just a really low chance of going gray. I've actually went gray once at 120. But really, how is it overpowered? As far as I know, only good 1-stone items are scrolls. It would be overpowered if you could steal 5-stones and up and never go gray. Me thinks you just upset that they stole it from you which I understand.

You should support my idea of bringing back perma-gray status :D
Thrill of the chase for the thief, and chance at vengeance regardless of area for the victim.

Remember what Dory said: just keep swim-ming, just keep swim-ming..
Indeed, nothing more annoying to a thief than someone who doesn't stand still. Except someone who hides and/or stealths :p

I think someone who doesn't stand still is way more annoying. If someone hides/stealths you usually move on the the next mark but someone who keeps moving is a constant reminder that you can't steal from em. It's almost like they are mocking you and it makes you not want to give up. It pays off if you can manage to steal from them but boy does it hurt if you cant.

Thiefs cant give murder counts anyway. So even if you flag grey or not all the blues can kill you and not get a count.

I use the old Snoop, Item ID the itme i want to steel. Mount horse run by youre mark hiting youre steel macro then at one square next to him hit the last target macro.

9 x out of 10 i get what i was aiming for. I am on the run at this point and mark does not notice for 2-3 seconds. I then hit wolf form and Egg bomb out of there.

Also if you get a scroll, remember it will initially drop in your main pack. Since the thief's view of your backpack will close if he remains still, before you even hide the scroll, the thief can quickly prime it as a last target using a dagger etc

Anytime after that, he can just do an innocent drive-by and use the last target macro no matter how well you hid it.

Chances are, most people will think that the drive-by is unintentional and never suspect a thing...

Moral of this story - whenever anyone even come within a tile of you, be prepared, esp if he suddenly runs away after that...

Your only defense is to get out of sight or hide. This also force closes the thief's view of your back pack if he had already snooped you previously.

Finally, hiding stuff under other things is not a reliable method. Sometimes, the hidden item will appear on top. Not to mention it's totally useless against thieves using KR. Using multiple containers to delay the thief is more effective.

Surely the most effective method would be to carry a lockable container with you, filled with enough items to not be stealable by itself. When you get the scroll, drop it in the box, lock it, and throw away the key (onto the corpse of a monster so nobody will find it)

I'm not sure if it's possible to pick locks inside someone elses pack, but if it is, you could just use multiple boxes, locking each one as you place it inside the next, for a locked russian doll style system. No chance any thief is getting into that.

To retrieve the scroll, just destroy your containers with an axe.

The above might sound like a lot of effort but if it's the difference between keeping and losing a +20 magery scroll, I reckon it would be more than worth it.

All I can say is this, unless it's a cursed item like a PS or Stat Scroll if a Thief robs you it was your own fault, unless of course your on Siege.

Now I know you got a 120 stolen, but hey it's not the end of the world right? I mean what did you really lose? You went to Fel and risked not getting any scrolls at all so your no worse off than you were before you went. Now if you'd just bought it off a vendor I'd say you were worse off because you were out the gold but seriously you didn't really lose anything you weren't prepared to not get in the first place. My advice? Suck it up and keep doing spawns, a Thief usually won't succeed every time it's a high risk profession that and if your in a group it's equally likely that he'll pick someone else next time, or that a party/guild member will reveal the thief and then you guys can run him off. There are far more shameful things than having a scroll stolen at a Spawn, don't let this get to you. If you don't believe me just read over Chad's site....Some of those people were innocent like you, but some were just being plain careless. Come to think of it I can give you some fine examples of people being careless from just yesterday...

http://uothief.com/thief/atlantic_ep025.html

I've been running a thief on Atlantic for about 2 weeks now, you weren't doing anything wrong yourself you just happened to be at the right place at the wrong time. For people like in that link well they were just being careless and silly those are the one's that should be mad, at themselves. And trust me they aren't alone.

The Ships and all the scrolls there....Stolen....if nothing else seeing that might make you feel better :lick:
