getting grey and guard whacked when killing own pet, bug ?

I wanted to get rid of a pack horse and instead of just releasing it I casted energy bolt on it. Just that second I casted the spell on it I got guard whacked. Was it always this way or is this a bug ? That was at the stable in Britain.
Later I did the same in my house. I casted energy bolt on my packy and killed it. After I killed it I was flagged grey.
Btw, that's on Siege Perilous.

It's always been this way. You can also get gw if you release a green hostile pet in gz.

BTW, pets have feelings too!

Next time, tell your pet to guard you then, if you must, cast on it.

Otherwise your pets will scream for the RSPCA to come and you'll get struck down. Pity they don't do the same IRL

Thank you for the fast answer. I never had a tamer and I never killed my own pet in the last 8 years, lol. It seems there's always a first time
