I am not sure about other shards, but a couple I play on, most often I see people talking quite aggressively towards each other on the General Chat.

Is that also on other shards ? Why is that ?

...people just do. People always have even before general chat. You just see it more now because we have the chat system.

Really not much you can really say about why people arguing though, because they're human? They like to? Etc... Make you're own answer.

As for arguing , there is a chat and if all would agree and stay on topic what would moderators be for?

I see it all the time...mostly from people PvP trash talking . but, I often find it quite amusing--almost a second form of entertainment within the game!

I think I can put it a better way...

Popps, why do you always argue over stuff on here, constantly? That's your answer.

(Yes you like yo down-play it as "debating" but it's still the exact same thing)

Well, but I think that personally, I try my best to hold my temper, be always respectfull of others and not let myself be carried over and become aggressive to others.

I cannot say the same of what I read at times on Global Chat when I log in to play.

I can understand discussing issues, debating them calmly, that is ok with me, what I do not understand is why being aggressive, sometimes even use derogative language.

That, I really do not understand the why.

I read Van Damme declined because he didn't want to loose a fight in the movie to Jet Li.

Bet he's kicking his own ass now...

Frankly, the answer to popps' question is an easy one.

Despite wishes of the general populace to the contrary, the devs chose to have a "General" general chat, instead of the "General-Felucca" and "General-Trammel" channels that were present during the initial testing on the live shards.

99% of the hostile crap (much of which is against the game rules of conduct/use, in terms of language violations), is trash talk between Fel guilds before, during and after fights (including raids). People have been paged on before because of stuff said in that chat.

One of the things I hope to bring up next weekend in Fairfax is the need to put a "cone of silence" over the Fel talk in General chat.

They need to make it to where conversations in Fel stay in Fel only, either by enforced channel selection, or making it to where those in Fel can hear the talk of people outside Fel, but people outside can't hear them unless in one of the other channels (player created, or the default ones for trading, help, etc.)

While this can be a bit of an inconvenience for Fel residents, they need to consider that it's better for the game not to subject everyone to their trash talking - not to mention safer for their accounts.

Yes it is just a bit of an inconvenience to someone who stays in fel and plays in fel like myself, to be excluded from general chat because of the actions of others.
On Drachenfels, general chat is mostly very civil and generally free from spam; I would be somewhat irked to be blocked from participating on general chat when I am in Felucca.

You should see the chat channels in most of the newer games. The people in them are competely immature ******s that talk smack and act idiotic all day long. Trolls. WoW's Trade Chat is infamous for it. UO's General Chat is pretty civil in comparison to them. Probably due to the fact that most of us UO players are an older, more mature player base.
One exception, is Darkfall though. Very little immature ******baggery/idiocy goes on in the in-game chat channels (The forums are an entirely different matter though). Likely due to the fact that immature ******bags that run their mouth off in a chat channel, get PKed, dry looted and bindstone camped continuously for their actions.

hen:

On LA, close to 90% of the General chat is PvP trash talk, much of the rest buying/selling spam, with the rare conversation between people on multiple facets being the far smallest part (usually to arrange another means of communication that doesn't involve competing with the PvP chatter on General, like arranging places to meet for characters to talk normally).

Shards vary, but there's no easy way to segregate the good talk from the bad.

IF you could get the PvPers to use a channel specific to their line of play, it would be one thing - but they seem to take perverse pleasure in saying things that really are actionable (if one paged a GM and actually got a response) over a channel that is being used for general purposes.

The ideal situation would be to bring back separate default chat channels for the different rulesets, but allow people to choose which one to use (but the channel would automatically reset to the default for the facet you're on, if you cross facets by gate or recall).

Trash talking would be against the rules in the Trammel channel, and they could have the GMs sitting on various shards, between help runs, looking to jail violators, to change their channel and tell them that doing it again could get them in trouble, if the wrong language used.

That way, people like you in Fel could use the General-Trammel channel to talk in normal conversations, and only have to worry about changing channels if you leave Fel, then come back to Fel. It would also mean that the trash-talkers would have to deliberately change channels, if a Red, to interrupt the Trammel channel with names, curses and other foul language.

But, I fear the only way to get the worst offenders on many shards to respect the rights of others to play without F-bombs and other words (remember, last I checked the profanity filter didn't work with the chat channels), is to forcibly isolate their chatter.

General chat was a bad idea to begin with, it was never going to work. It is just another way for PvPers to grief each other before and after fights. We have enough ways to communicate with each other, Guild chat = universal chat, Alliance chat = universal chat, Party chat = universal chat. Then there is face to face chat, for that up close and personal chat. To be honest I am embarrassed at some of the trash talk my guild mates use to taunt the other PvPers, but what can you do, once it started it gets way out of control fast, reporting people for the use of bad language and/or offensive phrases does not work, either the GM's can't access the chat log files or they are just not interested.

MHO is that its done nothing positive for the UO experience and needs to be moderated some how but im not sure how.

I disagree.

The General Chat has been a very good idea.

It can help players find each other to form hunting groups, it can help selling some particular item, it can be usefull indeed.

The only problem, is the aggressive and derogatory language often used.

Maybe it would be a good things to have a Chat database per shard where all daily chat gets saved for sometime to allow review if necessary.

Then, during maintainance, some software would scan it for non tolerable content and, should anything be found, the account would be punished in some way.

I would imagine that the risk of punishement for using inappropriate language would, eventually, after a while, deter players from continuing using inproper language in a public chat channel.

But the idea of a General Chat channel I find it as good and am happy that we were given it.

It's because General Chat is used primarily for PvP / Yew Gate, and because tensions run high during those situations. It's pretty funny, especially on Test Center. I turn off chat whenever I can, but every time I make a new char EA puts me back in it, sigh, haha.

The thing is, there already is a "PvP" channel, at least on Europa, but they don't bother with it because they want an audience for their idiocy; where ever the majority of players are, they'll end up going there to trash talk... that others don't enjoy it is part of the appeal. And reasoning that "you could get the same disgust just by pooping your own pants" doesn't work either, because they are addicted to the affect they have on you... it doesn't matter how easy, or how dumb it is to get it, they must have it, that wrinkling of the nose. So all you can really do is Global Ignore people like that; forcing people in Felucca into a "Felucca Chat" will just alienate the decent players who, for what ever reason, have chosen to live there as well.

It does raise an interesting aside though ,for those who constantly push for a "Classic" server; it can't have Global chat either, because the idea that you can kill those trash talking was reliant upon the ability to physically see, and then later kill people who did it. And you're hardly going to get the claimed "personal responsibility" of those days when someone can just make a newbie character and bad mouth everyone across a General from the safety of Haven's starting zone etc... if you truly want to go back to how it was then, you've got to go back all the way, which means removing that newer playground for the immature.

I disagree, while the e-peen waving of the PvP guilds is annoying enough, it's also VERY useful for ingame events to be broadcast so more people are aware of them on the certain shard as well as to connect people for buying and selling various items (without having to dig through Luna vendors).

I agree, it is kind of sad to see people swearing all the time on chat. Ignore is a remedy rather than a preventative measure and it doesnt actually stop anything.

Having someone to moderate chat, or disallowing some profanity, would be a good step. Drama is also pretty annoying too and I don't fancy ignoring people all the time (especially since it is a pain to remove them).

I also think there are too many channels - an example on Europa is where we have an "Event" and "EM-Event" channel. You also can't tell who is in chat so you don't know which chat to go in.

I much preferred the old system of chat where you could see who was in which channel. I have no idea why it was taken out :(

I made the PvP chat channel on one of my reds because I was embarassed and felt bad for the trading and conversation being interrupted by certain individuals (who are on my ignore list anyway) and their inability to moderate their language. This means that unless someone joins it while I am on that character the channel disappears when I log off. A more permanent solution is definitely needed to seperate the facets.

General Chat : why people argue so much there ?

Because some people are immature idiots without any sense of self-restraint or consideration for others, and given the chance to shout, scream and insult in a public area where they won't be stopped they grab it with both hands. Unmoderated chat, just like unmoderated forums, will always attract the egocentric, semi-literate, foul mouthed cretins who come crawling out from under their rocks knowing they are safe to behave however offensively they like - which in a way is useful, because you know straight away they are people you will never, ever want to meet, in-game or out, and it quickly tells you some names who are definitely not worth bothering with at all. Ignore them, carry on interacting with the vast majority who are decent people, and it's all survivable, to a point...

All I need is an unlimited size ignore list, and general chat over all facets would be OK for me. For people new to the game, or who don't understand how to filter out chat, though, it's a HUGE turnoff to get a screenful of text from some idiots swearing at each other with every obscenity they can remember and almost spell.

Unsurprisingly, almost everyone who made it onto my ignore list are the immature PvPers who so love being drama queens and having an audience for their ranting at each other. I know they can't be the majority of Fel players, but if anyone ever wonders why Fel is not attractive to people - just look at what the only visible people there have to say in chat, and you need never wonder again....

Ahh it's yours, this I did not know. But despite being a true "Trammie", I can't agree with separating the Facets, because most of the trade chat would be Trammel based, and which also goes on where the majority of players are, and Felucca players should be able to access that too. And of course, some will have friends across the divide... and EM events tend to be based in Trammel... nope, allowing the potty mouths to force a solution on the entire facet isn't going to be a useful solution I think

I tend to go for the Infinite Ignore List option myself, along with the "One character ignored applies to every character made on that account" option if you want it. That would also cut out the occasional idiot who constantly makes new characters just to be abusive in chat (and the gold sellers, who've I've not seen for a while now thinking about it...)

Has society changed so much that good manners have been thrown out of the window, althougether ?

And such a change should be seen as a conquest of civilization ??

Not all players have equal access to good manners or education. Some players have much more time and resources and hoard all the manners and education, creating a monopoly. This is a huge disadvantage to those who miss out and creates imbalance in the game. The developers really need to address the way that manners and education are doled out to players. Some have far more than others and use hacks and cheats to obtain them. This is unfair on the honest or casual player. Please remove manners and education from the game or make them available to all.

Because they can.

The way chat is done- it's like giving a bunch of 7 year olds water guns and no instructions/moderation. EA refuses to even mildly moderate the chat, which just goes to show how irresponsible they are. It's like the way they are handling cheating- spineless. Sorry, but they have had warnings for months/years that something was going to be done. They've had their 'warning'--- it's like stop--- before I say stop again... yeah.....

In general, I think that the idea of the chat was good, but it was very poorly implemented. When I first heard about it, I was hoping for an EQ type chat system, where you can even chat directly with someone across servers/join cross-server chats/be in multiple chats at once.

Admittedly, I don't know if in the EC you can join multiple chats, mainly because that UI is so damned ugly I can't stand to be in it for more than a few minutes here and there to test other stuff. I haven't messed with the chat system in it.
