[Magery] Gating off a Scroll

Afternoon all,

Can't seem to find the answer in the FAQ's, perhaps I just didn't read it properly.

Got a melee char with no magery, wanted to raise compassion, and we all know the easiest way is to be able to gate.

What's the lowest amount of magery I need to get off a gate spell from a scroll 1-in-10? or 1-in-3? And it's been so long since I tried to use a scroll for casting, if you fizzle it does it eat the scroll?

Cheers,

I can't give you the figures, but it doesn't use the scroll if you fizzle, so you can keep trying till you succeed. On Siege I've managed to gate (eventually) with as low as 48 magery.

I tend to do Compassion on a warrior from Skara to Jhelom, trinsic or moonglow. By the time I get there the 5 minutes wait time are about run out and I can take another as soon as I find one going to the right place.

Thanks petra.

Yeah I was wondering if I'd manage it with a 15 bracelet, 15 ring and a tome of lost knowledge. Not that I have any of those items :) Got a 14 bracelet and an 11 book somewhere, mates lending me a tome though but still don't know if I'd manage it.

Wanted to use the orc cave but think that's out of the question.

Used bravehorn the past 2 days. 5 escorts, 2 days in a row has taken me to 5 dots of compassion so may just carry on doing it that way.

Do you know how the compassion compares from bravehorn and town-to-town escorts?

Reason I didn't use the town-to-town escorts is because my first run around jhelom gave me nothing but taxi's to cove and serpents hold :D oh or nu'jelm lol! And Bravehorn isn't 5 minute wait, just kill once you reach the lake and have your gain, and he's usually respawned by the time you run the 15 or 20 screens SW

the chances to cast gate off scroll are as follows

38 magery = 1% chance
48 magery = 25%
58 magery = 50
68 magery = 75
78 magery = 100

Cheers Storm.

Think that's sealed it for me, stick to Bravehorn.

Not a chance of getting 48 on items, and I don't want to resort to stoning a skill.

I got a few skill points to play with - probably around 20, so I could probably manage 28 skill on items, but its just not worth it :)

Thanks again Storm

what i do is get 2 jewels plus 15 and book plus 15 thats 45 and I use scrolls and have no problems and it is faster than brave horn but thats just me! this also comes in hand as I usually have 1 or 2 arcane clothing items on that I also use for reactive armor etc much easier for me than carrying around scrolls and such then the only scrolls you need is gate

Good idea, doing some treasure maps atm so maybe I'll get lucky and stumble upon a 13-15 magery ring to go with my 14 magery bracelet.

btw if you are on ls shard I may be able to hook you up with the jewels at no cost to you!

oh and to answer your question about npcs
Rescuing Prisoners from NPC brigand camps, orcs, lizardmen, etc. will reward you with more progress (roughly double) than NPC's escorted from towns.

they do I already took that into account when getting the percentages
I was just confirming / reiterating your post .... in a more condensed / generalized way that was obviously less detailed. :)

And to make sure it was said, that was a very concise and detailed break down you did.
