Games in the Past

I've noticed that there is an abundance of online world games set in the past or with "past" themes, like UO, WoW, and Everquest among others. Why aren't there more games with technologically advanced themes like Star Wars?

Just one of my many wonderings. :)

I would guess that it has to do with the fact that most people's first RPG experiences were based on D&D which as you know is set in a Tolkien type world.

There's a certain level of familiarity with elves, dwarves, halflings and the whole swords and sorcery aspect.

Well there's Warhammer and EVE and... does Second Life have any sci fi stuff in it? never played it.
