Any chance that tedious wait for the repairman can be removed? It's not as if it adds an interesting challenge to the game or anything like that, just makes me late going to bed in real life

Or at least offer two classes of service, so you pay more to get someone out immediately?

I like the idea of having a "24-hour hotline" for repairmen! Perhaps after-hours repair calls should cost 2-3 times normal cost...

In the meantime, though, you could always hit up a skill house that specializes in mech - see if you can "hire" someone to come over and fix your stuff.
