Gains @ 103.4...

I am by far no expert at taming but I found using a ring to bring my level up to or above 110 allows me to tame Ki-rins and get good gains.
I have all my skills stoned except taming, lore and a little magery (only 95 magery for this task). My total skill points = less than 350 so at I can get a good forced gain rate.
I got this idea when I had 104 pnts and with a +10 taming ring I got to 108.5 within a five or six day span. I only spend an hour or two per evening doing this. Sometimes less due to time restrictions so 5-6 days isn't really as long as it sounds. Someone with more time to play should certainly do better than I.
Now that I'm over 108 I switched to a +2 taming ring and I'm still gaining.
On edit: I forgot to mention that I power scrolled myself to a 120 taming cap. I know not if it makes a difference in gaining.

Where can one get soulstones these days? I've been out of the loop for sooooo long...
Independent brokers are probably the best bet for soulstones these days.
But.. I believe single use soulstone fragments are craftable by alchemists now so there's always that avenue to explore.

Anyway - until I can score some Soulstones - can anyone help out with a more "direct" gain method for Taming? I know giant toads and frenzied ostards are the best near-50% success beasties for my skill level, but they're not exact easy to deal with or even find.

Kirins may not be 50% but they will give you steady gains

Cu's will give you decent gains at the skill lvl as well. Not sure if they're 50% but I am around 103 as well and gained .5 in about 45 mins.
I was a bit surprised though, and after that I didn't gain again for about another 2 hours. ;p

ridgebacks. ridgebacks carried me through 110 easy as pie, and they're non-aggro too.

Sure, they are, but the 10000000000000000000 savages/paragon dire wolves/etc/etc sure aren't.

Once I got over 100 I just went for my .1 a day.... I would tame 1 white wolfe a day. I've been told you can do bulls thru to 120....
