Frustration...

... so I'm pondering returning to UO after many many years away (Like, 7 or 8) and I realize that I have two accounts. One of which has pretty much nothing on it, and one of which has the wealth I accumulated while playing previously.

50% chance of renewing the wrong one. Argh! Then again I don't remember how much I had or if it's even worth the risk. I wasn't a real serious player.

Anyway, just thought I'd vent while I wring my hands trying to figure out which to reactivate, and say I look forward to finding some newbie friendly folks and re-learning the game!

Hmm that is a sticky wicket for sure. I know that on the Accounts homepage it will show you the age of each account or rather when they were opened and that "may" help you to remember. 7 or 8 years is a long time and a lot has changed, but you may have a cache of items that are no longer available in game and can fetch a shiny gold piece or two. There was a "return to Britannia" event running a few months back that would have let you access both accounts without reactivating for a short time, but sadly it has ended. :(

Best of luck on choosing and welcome back!

Let us knew what shard you end up on... I am sure there are plenty of people more than willing to help out an old newbie!

Went with the slightly newer account and it looks like I picked the wrong account sadly! Don't really feel like dropping the extra money on another monthly fee though, so I will just stick it out with this account and put SA on it.

Not sure about shards.. Atlantic seems to have the best population, but I am West Coast so that's a 120ms ping. I seem to recall the game being a bit picky about latency at times.

Any shards that are particularly old-newbie-friendly?

Well crud - sounds like we share the same kind of luck. I would have ended up with the wrong account as well. Perhaps you could spend the next few weeks relearning the game and then see about switching accounts and then upgrading? SA is well worth the cost if you ask me, but you will most likely not need it nor be ready for most of it in the next 30 days. Save for the new Gargoyle race and some of the new skills. Alternately at some point in the future you could re-sub the older account and "loot" the goodies. Honestly though skill gain is not too bad these days and New Haven can get you into the 50's within a few days of casual play.

As to shards... at this point you have East coast and West coast for North America, but you are free to choose any shard. The new Enhanced Client will help you pick a shard based on current online population. Unless you plan to focus on PvP the ping times seem to be pretty fair across the board so really it is about you typical play time and which shard would fit that best. If PvP is of interest then pick a shard with a better ping.

I am also a fan of reading some of the shard specific forums to get a flavor and feel for their community. Not all players use these forums, but it may be better than a roll of the die.

I have played on Lake Superior, Grate Lakes, Sonoma and currently spend my time on Catskills. All have great communities and seem populated enough, but Atlantic is by most counts the most populated. At the end of the day you should be able to find a group of friendly people to play with no matter which shard you choose. New Haven is a great place to look for help.

Best of luck and if you end up on Catskills or Lake Superior give me a shout!

Liked the look of the Catskills board the best, plus it's listed as medium population which sounds good.

Also I sent you an auth request on ICQ, if you have time to chat with an oldbie

If you ever decide to try a quieter shard, Lake Austin is a West Coast shard with really friendly people. A couple of the large Trammel-only alliances help people get back up to speed, even if you're not a member.

Sentrus, since all accounts have up to Mondain's Legacy now, you might want to take your crafter to get the recipes in Heartwood. The Twinkling Scimitar and Silver-etched mace are especially nice for warrior types, when made with runics.

Yeah right now I'm still being indecisive about shard and what character to start with... I know I'll need a money-making character first of all. Not sure what route to go there. I did go ahead and add SA to my account as well.

Well I am about to check out for the evening - long day, but I will certainly connect with you via ICQ.

For a quick tease you might try a few different combinations of skills in New Haven (the starting location for elves and humans). There are starter quests that are easy to complete and insightful. Wandering around the city you will find "Quest Giver" NPC that will give quests that pertain to a certain skill.

Something else to keep in mind is that once you create a character you are stuck with them for 7 days. (You cannot delete a character until it is at least 7 days old). This is not really new, but most people forget that little bit.
