Context: i found a link to a free shard and stratics advertizing it on these boards... some of you might have read it...

weird... my post got deleted... and so did the link to the free shards.

heavy conscience anyone?

My point: being pro-active means you fight what is wrong... and this shadow policy is now over.

someone said one man cant make the difference... you are right... money is what unballances it all...

Just sharing! Safe Gaming!

The same stratics boards that host links to illegal 3rd party programs? Surely not!!

...

While I believe it's generally ok to discuss the merits/flaws of free shards vs paid servers, it is against the rules of the board to post links and/or advertisements for the free shards.

When you mention freeshards, use the word "unicorn" instead.

(just joking though, we all know that unicorns are mythical animals that don't exist!)

No, got informed by a moderator that telling what freeshards could do better would be advertising and is so forbidden.

For those that may not be familiar with IRC, creating a channel on IRC is the same as creating a chat room via any number of messenger type programs The IRC network is open to anyone, and anyone can create a 'room', or in IRC lingo, a channel.

Unlike our forums where we can much more easily control what topics, actual forums, threads etc. are available, IRC users can create any number of channels at any time.

The IRC channel in question is not sponsored by, endorsed by, nor does Stratics support it in any official capacity.

In fact, the channel is actually flagged to NOT show in a channel listing, and has been for a very long time now. This means that a person would have to learn from an outside source the channel even existed as it does not show up when publicly searched for.

But, by allowing it to exist, are you not effectively saying "Freeshards are now ok"?

Just curious as to why the policy was changed (If indeed, it was?)
From the freeshard website it looks like the channel was setup sometime in April 2007, which is around about the time (I think...?) that the fansite program was essentially terminated.

What bothers me is you have conflicting policies across your site(s), in one area such a thing is ok, but here, the mere mention of it seems to make threads dissapear.

You guys are pretty stringent in obeying gaming companies ROC's/TOS's, so it just seemed odd to see such channels showing up, when they clearly violate EA's TOS/ROC

That make sense?

As I see it, freeshards are ok, we are on the stratics board just not allowed to talk about them.

If I were discussing them (and I'm not), I believe the more appropriate question would be, "what could they do worse?"

It's satire, get over it!

It wasn't changed.

Good try...no connection there...coincidence

The games we have sites for have differing EULA's and TOS'. Yeah things are different

Again, I refer you to how IRC works as explained in my first post.

I'm not going to debate this Adam. I would think, running a forum yourself, that you'd have a bit more professional approach if you had issues or questions with some policy here. You certainly have had no past issues with emailing Joshua and myself, or PM'ing us

So..erm...check your PM's

ok, now this is just not even thinking.

are warez legal?? HECK NO. on irc there are TONS of warez channels.
hrmm do you know what warez is even ?
do they remove these channels even tho the world knows they are illegal ? NO
what about the Gazillion porn channels that host EVERYTHING?

the point is.. only YOU can stop such things by not doing them yourself, and do not encourage other to do them.

and fight a more worthy fight. when EA pulls the plug on UO i plan totaly on making my own personal shard to play on, with all my stuff (screen shots so replecating everything will be easy). i don't even care if it connects to the net or not, network would be ok, but internet don't matter.

would i play on another persons shard? NO

A few months ago I posted a link to a youtube video about the Iris client, with the full 3d stuff, as comparison to KR.

Since they use their own artwork and own code and do not even use the UO communication protocols, I'd say it was perfectly legal. But it vanished nonetheless.

The fact of the matter is, while you can police IRC, its very difficult to. They can change the channel name, call it something else, whatever.

Feels like people who have gotten in trouble for something in the past are trying to make their actions on the forums right by proving Stratics in the wrong somewhere.

It doesn't work with me as a mom and my son, so somehow I don't think its gonna work here.

actually Zigzag this has been a issue around here for awhile. it's one of the reasons i WAS seriously interedted in buying stratic's.
there was, not sure how bad it is now.. a big problem with mod's and abusing there 'powers'.

as for the second part, do you think stratic's IRC is the only IRC there is? LOL

how can you possiably expect to police something that is worldwide and has been around since the birth of the internet?
all stratics IRC is, is a sub IRC server. try logging into DALnet or efnet.

guess it goes to show that other person is running around with blinders on so they can't see the world.

It's not...that's why we can't really police it. There are rules in place. People can create channels. They can create them password protected, etc etc ad nauseum. The problem is forums are more easily veiwable than IRC channels. And are often read by more users than IRC channels are.

As far as mods "abusing powers", if there's ever an issue with mods abusing powers, talk to the forum admins either via PM or email.

Hell, I use IRC as little as possible because of my husbands discourses on how "its not safe to use security wise for our network" (don't ask, he's paranoid because he's a network admin).
