I know I got lucky and found a vendor that had a 120 mage scroll for 4 gold.

I bought it.

Now... did I keep it or did I wait 3 hours and try and give it back or did I just keep it?

What would you do?

And what is the biggest missed priced item you found in game?

There is a bug (?) I think if you put free stuff in before, which sometimes claims, that there is still pending text input from an item you did put in before into the vendor.
If this message appears, the new item does not get priced, and therefore the Vendor Designated Price (or what VDP means) is assigned.
This is what did hit that scroll.
(It's similar to bags, which you want make not for resale and get a price as well from the vendor, which applies to all stuff in them.

What to do?
If I could be sure to meet the owner, I would sell him the scroll back for a fair price (but for more than 4 GP, for sure, if he is not an ingame friend).

But how to find the vendor owner at all?

I've stumbled across a few powerscrolls and jewelry that were obviously mispriced. Each time tried to contact the seller to return the item to them or give them additional gold, and every time got a thank you for being honest and was told to keep the item in question. I felt better that I at least tried to do the right thing and perhaps the seller also slowed down the next time they put stuff out to sell and doubled checked their pricing.

Edited to add: When I found the mispriced power scrolls, there was a bulletin board in the house that I was able to use to track down the owner of the vendor NPC. The jewelry was on a vendor at a house that belonged to a particular guild. I tracked down the owner of the vendor NPC through the guild leader. If you can find someone who claims to be the owner of the vendor in question, couldn't you have them prove they are the owner by changing the clothing/equipped items on the vendor or rearranging the items that are for sale?

I have bought the horse lord for 20k on ls and it goes for 500k to 1.5 mill and bought both the mischief maker and the reaper for under 50k and they go for at least 500k each as for what I would have done I would have kept it if I needed it unless it was someone I knew the old saying is buyer be ware but it is also seller be ware I have made the same mistake on my vendors to and never expected anyone to bring it back :)

Is there a dupe? HA! No offense intended, but if someone were to dupe 120 magery scrolls, I don't think they would need to bother selling anything for 4 gold. :)

As for giving it back, I have given things like this back before for free, and sometimes not. Depends if I see them out there stocking/checking the vendor right away or not. And my mood. If they are standing right there, I'll buy it and fork it on over. My rep is much more important.

I figure if I don't buy it, the next guy will and for sure not give it back.

I m sure its a dupe ! Thats why this guy is going to sell thousands and thousands of +20 magery for 4gp !
Now, because you bought it, the best thing you have to do, you have to trash it immediately at one of the trash near the banks before a gm ban you !

Even a duper wouldn't sell that for 4 gold. If you wanna be nice and send him some real gold for it, that would be nice.

I've had a vendor house for over 4 years and I'm positive I've undersold stuff by mistake.........it happens.

I've also been told that I made mistakes in pricing and that my regular customers bought the item without checking the price at first. I sold one guy 100 bandaids for 450,450 gold. Clearly I hit 450 twice. Fortunately I had just cleared all the gold off the vendor and I was able to confirm the cost mistake. I refunded the player his money and gave him some extra stuff for his troubles.

Wow this is a longer reply than I had intended. :)

Do whatever, I would eat it though. It jsut goes to show you what the gimme generation has done to me. They are all a bunch of good for nothing lazy bums and want everything for free.

If you are an old retiree then you would give it back and lol about it with the guy as he sets the price to 25 mil.

Edit: CAn the seller track who bought what? I would still eat it anyway, but can they?

The Burden isnt yours to know that your buying a duped item. Period.. I dont care whom tells you that it is. The burden falls on the Game owners/operators.
Dont let the fact that your paying for a service. Just because they say things are a certain way in the terms of service dont make it legal or just; Just incase it might say- you cant buy unknown duped items.
I am so sick of big business rail-roading customers.

Now, if your a havoc hacker or an exploitor, spamer; you need to be banned from having internet service forever.

i once found a hunters headdress for 12 gp on a vendor which i resold for 12 mil, i didn't think twice about finding the owner, you have to be not too swift to misprice something and they deserve no leniency for mispricing the item, but rather a harsh lesson that will teach them to pay close attention, i would definitely either use that 20 mage or sell it for full value

yeah well its all boils down to a bug and they dont fix those so save u breath all they will do is move on its was his fualt for no makeing sure price was set correctly.
so why dont u just eat it and move on if it was a dupe i dont thin it would matter if it worked as long as u didnt sell it.

Buy it, use it. If the seller can't laugh it off, he's taking UO a bit too seriously.

I once bought something that was priced at 400k. ie: the seller typed in "400k" to price it, leaving an item for 400gp described as "k".

Ya ever hear that old (really, really old .. btb) chestnut : "Caveat Emptor" ?

applies to sellers too ...

did you go through all the rest of the prices ? all the rest of the vendors ? the entire shard ?

Whats the Default price applied for any PS on a vendor ?

4gp ... but it requires some effort to leave it that way ... and, then theres "checking your work"
...
Caveat Emptor

btw ... if there was a dupe? they'd likely price it as equal to or greater than ... a repair deed ...50gp and up.

Suprised to see folk saying its a bug, it isnt, its simply a default price they game system puts of items when first dropped onto vendors.

The system has a set price (extremely low) for every item ingame. It is up to the owner to ensure they enter the correct price.

Things do go wrong-
1:) You drop an item, and miss price it, or add the description mid way or at the start- 4 rolls 200gp.

2:) You drop an item on top of another, the new item rubber bands, and doesnt request a price...it then defaults to set price.

3:) Simple things like the 'No Insured' fix can cause problems.

4:) You chat on icq and forget....;)

Personally, if I find an error, I try to locate the vendor and will pay him 1/2 the going price, scant reward, but.....

If I cant locate, ah well, bargain, and with 3 x 50 vendor malls, I make ricks every day, and noone runs up to me handing me my error, unless they are close freinds...

Ive sold Mace and Shield for 900gp, HOM for 12gp....so yup, been there.
The lesson is, the 60 sec cool down is there to help us not hinder, if your placing a 12m item, check it......

The default price on a vender is 4 gold. Someone messed up and didn't get his price in. Easy to do if one gets distracted or are in a rush.

The dupe statement was sarcasm.
Never translates well in email.

It was the default price.

I kept it.
I did hang around for a bit.
But didnt really push finding the owner.

In the end. Im still out 10's of millions on my own dumbness.

I would agree with that, if your using vendors alot, you'll likely have made the same mistake yourself, so it balances out :p

I would leave a message on the bulletin board (if there is one) and my icq. Maybe a book with a message or check the house sign for the house owners icq to contact him. I tend to find such things often but almost always manage to find the owner to return it.

But it is completely within your rights to keep it.

Yep.
It wasnt a little place. Like 50 vendors in mega vendor area.

I was more like...
Hey is this your vendor... I just bought this 120 magery scroll for 4 gold. Would you like it back?

Im tainted enough to think the guy would be like.
N.. I mean yes its my vendor thanks so much.

I think it was my scroll. Which server do you play? That you can hand it over?

(No offens, but if someone can afford to sell such a ps via a vendor he probably also can afford to sell it for 4 gp.)

You simply ask the person to call the vendor outside the house. Figuring out the ownership is not an issue.

And as I said, it is completely a personal choice. I always choose to return things like that because it does happen to me too sometimes and I know I get annoyed by it. I like to not cause same type of heartburn to other people over pixels if I can help it. However, if you want to keep it then there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.
