All I can tell you is to use the skill All the time ie on NPC's, all dead or killed Monsters/Players.

It has been some time since I worked forensics, but at the time I went to the theives hall in Buc's Den (Trammel) and used the skill on the NPC theives in the building. Good luck in your training.

I had a character in the thieves guild and I repeatedly used forensic on that character to get gains. It got me to 70, but I could go no further. I just now found a Miasma chest that had been picked open and I am getting gains past 70.

As I had found out late in the game, you can also use it on containers to get gains. Using it on containers that people will lockpick you can find out who either picked it or opened it, one of the two.

Ive been working it on siege where i cant buy it from an NPC...

Ive been using it on hinds after ive killed them (gaining fencing as well)

Im up to about 10 now although only taking to 15.


Question...what is the success chance of recognising a thief at 15 skill?

I take it that you don't gain forensic eval on failed attempts. I have the skill in the high 20's only, having bought it from a healer, and am getting zero gains trying to evaluate the npc thieves at Bucs. Is there some way to get gains at super low levels other than on the thieves, which are not working for me?

Yes there is! Go to any of the champ spawns and FE the corpses. Gained to low 50's with shadow wisps. Just remember that you need positive karma at Oaks.

Ok I'll ask the million dollar question. Aside from role playing a detective what is the benefit of FE? Sure you get to know who killed someone or opened something but does it give any other benefit? Ie does it boost another skill ie like inscription to magery or something? curious minds want to know?

It can tell you who is in thieves guild.
Not much use really...but if youre in Tram and they die for whatever reason you can loot em. Kinda fun to take uninsured items from them in Trammel. Or if in Fel you wont go grey looting a thief corpse.

EDIT: You dont need FE to do these things. Just makes it so youll know when you use the skill on someone.


And to the OP, see if your shard has any lockpicking houses around. I GMd by using lockpick boxes of the same skill level. When lockpicking you use certain boxes according to your skill level, FE seems to work exactly the same. If you have 70ish FE find the 70ish boxes,etc. Around 85 or so youll need GM locked tinker boxes.
