this was a post in late 2003/2004 during the Tournament of Champions.... Fel side PVP
this is how popular it once was... on UO.COM
Today marks the fourth shard to compete in the OSI-sponsored Tournament of Champions, and so far the response has been amazing! So amazing, in fact, that it's necessary to clarify a few ground rules as to how many people we can get into the viewing area for these fights.
As most of our players know, there is a limit on how many players can be in one area at one time before the servers start to slow down - and when two teams are fighting, it's vital that we not allow the servers to get too clogged. This means that spectators will be allowed, but on a first-come, first serve basis, and when we get to the point where the server begins to be affected by the number of people watching, no more spectators will be allowed inside the viewing area.
We did try allowing players to view as ghosts, but that did not alleviate the lag issue, so we are no longer asking players who want to view the event to come as ghosts. Come as you are, but if you want a good chance at a seat, come early! We can't guarantee anyone a space in the viewing area, but if you want a good chance at one, we recommend getting there a full two hours before the event begins.
As an alternative way of sharing the event with more players, we've also been recording the final bouts of each shard's matches, which will be made available for viewing some time in the near future. As a note, we did not record the final match of the first day's fights on the Atlantic shard, since it wasn't until then that we realized how many people were going to be in attendance! But we did record the final match on Sonoma and Pacific, and have been recording the final match for each shard since. We'll let you know once these are available!
Good luck in attending the Tournaments on your shard, and stay tuned to the Spotlight section at UO.com for interviews with some of the winners!
