I am far from a computer tech savy person. Just wanted to know if it is possible to play UO from a flash drive and if so is it actually playable. GOing to visit my parents next week and if I need to scratch my UO itch it would be nice to do so without having to load the game on their machine much less update from the dvd's. Just wondering.....

Thanks in advance...

Jeremiah, I haven't tried it but I'd have to say, probably no. Reason being is the registry entries that are needed to run the program and get written durign the install.

However, there's probably no reason you couldn't copy your UO program directory to the flash drive, install UO on the other computer, then copy the files off of the flash drive and be patched up fully to the same version as you have on your main computer. This would at least save the problems of waiting forever and 10 years to patch.

Thanks Anne. I assume the same would hold true if I used an external hard drive?

Aye, the problem is, certain paths and entries are written to the computer's registry during install. If you move the external drive to another computer, that computer won't have the same registry entries. I.E. it won't know where to find the paths, etc.

However, that being said, I've not actually tried it so you could always try. I did a registry search on my machine and did find some entries for UO. I'm basing my answers off that search and what I know about the way our software at work installs. :)

The answer is, Absolutely!

I play from a flash drive from time to time as it is, hehe.

Heres what you need to do.

Go to Start
My Computer
C:\ Drive
Program Files
EA Games

and right click copy the Entire Ultima Online folder.

Next, open up your flash drive from my computer or its auto start.

Right click paste the entire UO folder into it. (Im using a 2gig flash drive)

Now you are ready.

Simply insert the flash drive into whatever computer you wish to play from.

Start
My Computer
Open your flash drive
open the UO folder
Click the very first client you see.

And viola, you have UO from a flash drive with the latest patches.

Hope it helps.

well, i use a sandisk 2 gig flashdrive. Fairly cheap.
you can get a decent one for about 10$. Meijer,Wal-Mart, Best-Buy. Any of them.Id go Sandisk tho, ive had mine for two years, dropped it from a second story window, stepped on it and it still works.

Well I have loaded UO, ICQ and Firefox onto a flash drive and all 3 work! I just need to see if I can get my ICQ Contacts and Firefox bookmarks to transfer over as well. I have yet to try runnning all three at once from the flash drive and see how that affects performance. Hard for this guy to beleive that the little drive has more memory than the first few computers I ever owned!

Thanks again for the help
