For Devs - Char name

I knew that the name of a char had to be 16 letters ( inckuding spaces) maximum.
I know a player who has 17 letters. I don't say here his name, but why if the maximum is 16 he can have 17 letters?
There was, in the past, a quest for having a new name longer?
If not, i also need a 17 letters new name :)
For the devs, PM to me and i'll say to you the name of the player...

having that 17th letter is extremely important if you need to be plural, for sure.

you can't be a plural version of a 16 letter word without that 17th letter. The real question is why do you even need to use 16 letters?

Dragkins, for me is important, ok??

Omnius, what means "to be plural"? Sorry but i understand english not very well :(
It's important because the name that i've chosen for a new char ( account 6 years old) is 17 lettes long. And I can't use it. It could be a stupid problem but if i see chars with 17 letters i don't understand why i can't. My new name would be 2 words with a space between them.
Why some people has name longer that 16 letters??
And if it's a stupid question, don't answer to me, ok????
The question was for devs. Are you devs????
Uff...... also in Italy there always someone that answers only to have a one more post. I thought that american people was less stupid than italian guys :(
Or not?

In any case, it's a devs question then... be quiet :)

Singular = one of a thing

Plural = more than one of a thing.

Eg - One house, two houses.

Hope that helps :)

You shouldn't be grassing on people for having an extra letter in their name. That's just poor form.

I didn't understand nothing at all sorry. Speak more easy please :)

For the others. One name can be plural or not plural???
A name is a name. And one of my tamer have an apostrophy, but with this "letter" it's only 16 letters. The apostrophy is like a letter :(

I repeat, for all that think that this
post is a stupid post, don't reply. It's made for an answer from devs.
Bye bye :)

I understand your problem, but are you sure that the "space" is considered a character? As for the others giving you crap if just ignore them they usually go away. Almost forgot Merry X-mas...

I'd like to know the answer to this, too. In the past I've wanted to use more than 16 letters for some character names, too. If it's possible somehow, I think a lot of people would like to know.

another question, is the limit the same in both 2D and KR?
Arrrr, mayhaps they be usin' one o' them special characters that looks like 2 letters but is really just one character! Can ye do that in UO namin'?
Both very good questions that could use answering.

Here are others:
-Is the name you are looking at the one which pops up above his/her head and does the paper doll show otherwise?
-Could it be that the character is just really old? (Maybe long ago the character limit was not so limiting, etc?)
-Are you making sure not to count the special titles of "Lord," or "Lady" which are fame titles, or other titles that are related to events? ( I know there is something like Duel Master or related for the winner back when Duel events were held in the dueling pit in Jhelom.)

In English, plural is "more than one"

auto = one (singular)
autos= = 2 or more (plural)

Weegie. Regional dialect. If you're not Scots, you have no chance of understanding it. If you are Scots, a better chance than most.

Rough translation - hey, are you from Glasgow? If you are, what are you looking at you fool?

And before anyone starts, I was born in Bellshill, k? :lick:

It was a good question, and I have now learned something too. I've used a name change, and didn't know that it increased the possible name length.

And to the meanies who mocked Ivory: how many of you could post a question in Italian?

Dear Sir or Madam,

... it's a PUBLIC FORUM... if you thought you were PM'ing, emailing or otherwise directly contacting the Devs, allow me to correct you.

It amazes me that some folks just toss stuff out on Stratics when EA has an entire website devoted to their games including... yup... a system for contacting them and getting answers to questions.

Safe Travels, Sam

They have changed the rules many times..... but I'll tell you a story about names......

Years ago UO offered a thing called "UO Weddings"..... Where two characters could pay to get "married" in game..... the package came with a wedding certificate(they mailed to you), two rings engraved however you liked up to 30 characters long, two ingame wedding certificates with the date of the wedding, the characters names, and all pretty nice, about 25 or 30 can't remember "invitations" which looked like scrolls. Also if you wanted they gave you the ceremony, played games and had things for your guests.(We opted out of that and had a friend marry us ingame at his temple was very nice I still have pictures) Now I know this because 1) I preformed a wedding ceremony for a couple of friends in my Theatre, 2) I myself and a good friend got "Married" in-game.....

Now.... one other thing you "got" with the wedding was a name change... apparently when you got this name change normal rules didn't apply. My character has 17 letter in her name..... Because we were married.... however my "husband" in-game had WAY more than 17.... close to 25 actually..... Was about 2 years later we were at some in-game event when someone "paged" on my Husband for having an "abnormally" long name.... The GM came and force him to change his name.... was extremely upsetting....

Now what I can't understand to this day is..... as it was a GM who gave us the marriage in the first place and gave us the names in the first place.... yes making it abnormally long..... and he was allowed to do this then WHY did he have to change his name? Personally I fear the day that some jerk pages on me for the name being 1 letter too long.... and I've had the name like that for at least the last 5 years.... perhaps more. It's my name.... we paid for it. I did at one time take the trouble of putting 120 tailoring on her and making several items with her name on them just in-case they ever ruined her name..... though I do also have a fear they will ban my account out of ignorance or delete my character..... that I think would be the last day I play UO.

They had talked about bringing back weddings to UO..... I really hope they do.... was one of the most memorable things I can remember.....

I don't care if they do the ceremony or not.... in fact I'd prefer they didn't and allowed us to perform them ourselves in-game.... far better that way.. but to offer the package again with the invitations, the rings and certificates would be really neat.

So the answer to your question may be that this particular person "paid" for the 17 character long name.....

Also another FYI.....I believe, it's based on character letter spacing.... so if your name is short with a lot of I's and lower case L's in it then the spacing is much smaller than if the name has several W's or M's..... and if you use a lot of W's and M's.... you can't have 16 either..... because they take up too much space. So theoretically someone with a bunch of L's and I's may actually get 17...

nicely done MalagAste. I love the Wedding memory story since I have forget about all those wondefully moment in this game. Proof that back on those day we use to spend more time socialize and enjoying each other compagny. A for the name letter, we all have to deal with it. Let the person enjoy her name and move on with your.

I agree wholeheartedly...... hence my post...... I do hardly ever log her in anymore cause I'm afraid I have to change my name.... which would be a shame and you can bet I'd raise one heck of a stink..... afterall the name was GIVEN to me by a GM.

And I know they changed the rules of character names because actually Malag's name is really Malag'aste ..... but I had to make it MalagAste because you can't have the ' in there.... which is a shame as Drow have those things... quite often..... but such is life..... But then if you go way way back in UO time..... there didn't use to be any rules in place for naming your character and some folk went WAY out of line.... I guess we all can't be creative or adult.... But worrying about one extra little letter seems rather silly.

P.S. ..... Devs please bring back UO Weddings!

I beleive my char is the one causing issues in this case as I have dealt with ivory on a few occasions. For the record no name change was involved. the chars name is the name it was created with. No exploit as she is alluding to was involved. I simply typed the name in and it fit and i continued with the char creation. Mind you this was over 9 years ago so I am sure the rules might have changed since then.

Robert Pen Dragon. (as It appears on the chars paperdoll)
